Petit Clos - Apalta 2021

Petit Clos 2021 – a great value for money wine

Le Petit Clos is the second wine of Clos Apalta, created with the vintage 2014.
Le Petit Clos benefits from the exact same care both in the vineyard and in the cellar.  The personality of Le Petit Clos becomes stronger every year. It is a wine of great quality, a subtle blend of richness, finesse and freshness.

The 2021 vintage

The 2021 vintage was challenging as it brought a scenario of climatic disruptions. After a mild winter, the spring changed the temperature pattern with a wider thermal amplitude. Then, summer brought an unprecedented climatic event known as an “atmospheric river,” resulting in 68mm of rain in just three days. Following this event, the weather turned consistently cooler. The fall was dry and cold, causing the grapes to mature slowly with less accumulated heat compared to the past four vintages.

Le Petit Clos Apalta 2021 (Apalta Valley, Colchagua, Chile; 68% Carménère; 16% Cabernet Sauvignon; 15% Merlot; 1% Cabernet Franc; pH 3.56; 15% alcohol; tasted at the CVBG press tasting over Zoom with Andrea Leon, technical director). A cooler and more elegant vintage. More Carménère in the blend here than usual. A little hint of violet. Richer, bolder, broader in its amplitude and softer and more svelte on the entry. Mimosa, lily of the valley. There’s a lot more obvious saline minerality too. Creamy. More spicy too. Graphite, maybe a little HB pencil shaving, a hint of cedar. That signature lift and leafiness. Lots of intensity and the granitic tannins grip and draw this back to the spine, reducing the initial amplitude anticipated by the aromatics and present on the attack. A lovely dark chocolate note. Very precise and taut on the finish. Very linear. Tense. Exciting. More acidic than the grand vin and over a more restricted frame, but the same linearity. Well-sustained on the finish. 96.

Drinking Window 2024 - 2038
Embracing a Bordeaux-style approach, Le Petit Clos is the second wine of Clos Apalta. The 2021 Le Petit Clos combines 68% Carmenere, 16% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot and 1% Cabernet Franc, all sourced from the Apalta Vineyard in Colchagua. Displaying a purple hue in the glass, it exhibits a ripe character mellowed by the fresh nature of the vintage. It offers plum and blackberry aromas along with bay leaf, boldo and menthol hints over an ashy marmalade core. Indulgent, plush and rich on the palate, the soft and overwhelming mouthfeel lingers long with a precise, juicy and slightly refreshing personality. The 2021 vintage is indeed a standout for Clos Apalta.

High Carmanère for the blend of this wine, in a cooler vintage coming both from the flattlands and the hillsides, so expect fresh tomato leaf and white pepper spice, with excellent grippy tannins with a lean character to the fruit, spiced plum laced with white pepper. A touch of heat appears on the back of the throat. 3.56ph. Andrea Léon technical director, 37% new oak for ageing.

A nice touch of baked cherries and dark chocolate to the deep blackberry fruit. Ink and a touch of graphite and dried herbs. Full-bodied and pretty powerful with fine-grained tannins and a long, extensive finish. 68% carmenere, 16% cabernet sauvignon,15% merlot and 1% cabernet franc. Give it two more years to let the fruit settle more. Drink or hold.
