Clos Lunelles - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2021

Perse Latitudes

After a first life in retail marketing, Gérard Perse decided in the 90's to satisfy his passion for wine. His future will be written in Saint-Emilion, his favorite place. He acquired the châteaux Pavie, 1er grand cru classé "A" of Saint-Emilion, Pavie-Decesse, Monbousquet, grands crus classés of Saint-Emilion and then Bellevue-Mondotte, still in Saint-Emilion, and Clos Lunelles in Castillon, Côtes de Bordeaux.

Because wine is enhanced both by the location and the dishes associated with it, the Perse family bought the Hostellerie de Plaisance, a mecca of gastronomy and lifestyle, which later became the Hotel de Pavie and its double michelin-starred restaurant, the Table de Pavie. Since 2020, the collaboration with Yannick Alleno, a leader of French gastronomy, symbolizes a new dynamic and the great ambition carried by the family.

The 2021 vintage, a show jumping for experienced rider

Control of pace, lenght of stride and the trajectory necessary to guarantee a clear round.. the 2021 growing season often felt like taking part in a show jumping event. While anticipation and flexibility were essential factors, knowledge and experience in the vineyard were required to get through this vine cycle's tricky climatic episodes of this vintage. Just like the rider who trains and prepares his mount for a jumping event, it is also the result of precise and regular work carried out over time by loyal and passionate teams.

Clos Lunelles, full of promise.

Purchased in 2001, this 9-hectare property is located on a plateau in Saint Colombe, the highest point of the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, in the continuation of the limestone plateau of Saint-Emilion, whose characteristics it shares.
At the time of its purchase, the Perse family decided to focus on the Castillon Côtes de Bordeaux appellation, which is unfairly underrated and full of promise. Since then, the estate has benefited from the high standards and expertise of the Perse family and its teams in order to reveal its full potential. Each year, the teams adjust their winemaking and ageing methods to produce wines that are accessible and faithful to their terroir.

Clos Lunelles is the hidden gem in the Perse portfolio. It is especially fine in 2021. Bright acids and mineral notes drive through a core of red/purplish fruit, lavender, rose petal, mint, spice and blood orange. The 2021 is impeccable.

Very clear and mineral with a firm, lightly chalky tannin structure. Plenty of blue fruit and stones. Long and structured. Firm yet fresh at the end.

The 2021 Clos Lunelles comes from the Castillon region and is 80% Merlot and 10% each of Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. it has classic limestone notes of chalky minerality, red and black fruits, and spice to go with a medium to full-bodied, round, textured, almost sexy style that's very hard to find in this vintage.

Rayonnement de la bouche avec un tannin à la fois juteux, crémeux et une texture caressante et stylée, c’est une belle réussite.

Clos Lunelles perfectly amalgamates the freshness of the tea stems with the soft body of the 2021 vintage. Thanks to the late harvest happened from October 7 to 11, it achieves some very satisfying phenolic ripeness. The round palate covers up the unique power from the limestone plateau. It is some mysterious energy combined with the chalky structure brought by the terroir, fascinating and arresting. Black cherries, black raspberries, flowers and chocolate in the nose, the wine shows good color along with ample sweet, tart and salty black plums, bitter cocoa and savory herbs in the supple-textured finish. The wine was made from blending 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 10% Cabernet Franc, 14.45% ABV. Drink from 2025-2040. 91-93

The 2021 Clos Lunelles was picked at 36hL/ha, twice the yield of Monbousquet this year, advantaged by plots exposed to wind that inhibits the spread of rot. Picked October 7–11, it offers a mélange of red and blueberry on the nose, along with hints of wilted violet petals and orange sorbet. It feels more harmonious than the Monbousquet. The palate is medium-bodied with fine grip and nicely judged acidity (pH is 3.58). There is backbone to this Clos Lunelles, the 10% Cabernet Sauvignon imparting graphite notes toward the finish. This is worth seeking out, though note that alcohol level is high for the vintage at 14.45%.

The 2021 Clos Lunelles offers lovely fleshiness and resonance, naturally in the more restrained style of the year. There's terrific density and textural richness. Black cherry, plum, mocha, spice, licorice and a touch of new oak all meld together seamlessly. This has real potential. Best of all, Clos Lunelles should be a screaming value.

Floral et frais, des notes de fruits noirs, de violette et d'iris. Juteux, frais, des tanins structurants en finale avec un ensemble qui serre un peu.
