Pavillon rouge - Margaux 2023

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux, the story of a great second wine

Pavillon Rouge du Château Margaux took its name in 1908. After an eclipse between the thirties and the mid-seventies, its production restarted on the arrival of André Mentzelopoulos in 1977 and at first greatly increased in order to improve the quality of the first wine. From the mid-90s, the creation of a third wine in its turn, allowed for a more rigorous selection for Pavillon Rouge.

The quality of Pavillon Rouge has become very close to that of the first wine because all the plots involved contributed to the blending of Château Margaux not so long ago. It may not have the same “magic” as its elder brother, but it definitely shares its flavours, its balance and the same subtle senses of power and softness.

The 2023 vintage

After a relatively mild and dry winter, the vineyard awoke in early April. Spared from frost, the spring featured frequent but light rain, except for a particularly rainy fortnight in June. These conditions made maintaining good vineyard health somewhat challenging. However, thanks to the expertise of our teams, we ensured healthy foliage, guaranteeing optimal grape ripening and a beautiful harvest. Unlike 2022, this year saw only one heatwave in August, just when the berries are most sensitive to heat. Meticulous sorting during the harvest allowed us to select the best fruits.

Pavillon Rouge 2023 is the result of meticulous selection and represents only 30% of the harvest. Like Château Margaux, Pavillon Rouge 2023 is very precise in terms of aroma and silky on the palate. The dominance of Cabernet Sauvignon imparts remarkable freshness and length to this wine.

The 2023 Pavillon Rouge has a pure and sensual bouquet with layers of red berry fruit, blackcurrant pastilles and hints of blood orange in the background. Wonderful delineation. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins that caress. Fine weight, building nicely toward a fulsome, rounded finish that suggests it will drink after just 2 or 3 years. Very fine.

Extremely perfumed rose-petal, lead-pencil and dark-bark aromas follow through to a medium to full body with crunchy, juicy tannins and a creamy, polished texture. Deep, long and flavorful. One of the best Pavillon Rouges in a while. A blend of 79% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc. Drink after 2027.

The 2023 Pavillon Rouge du Chateau Margaux accounts for 30% of this year's production. Deep garnet-purple in color, it pops from the glass with vibrant notes of red and black currants followed by hints of rosebud tea, crushed rocks, dried Provence herbs, and Sichuan pepper. The medium-bodied palate delivers an impressive mid-palate of ripe, juicy red and black berry flavors with soft fine-grained tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing with a spicy lift. The blend is 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot, and 2% Cabernet Franc, with pH 3.60.

An aromatic punch of white and red roses, feels very much in the DNA of the estate, with perfume, richly nuanced cassis, bilberry, tobacco leaf, cigar box. Fine tannins, with energy and clear - and this is a 2nd wine that elevates the possibilities of the 2023 vintage. September 11 through to October 5 for harvest, 30% of the production in Pavillon.

The 2023 Pavillon Rouge is a deep, intense wine. Bright acids drive a core of dark red-toned fruit, spice and flowers. There's a bit more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, which makes structural elements stand out, but the tannins are on the lower side analytically. I would give this a few years to come together. Pavillon Rouge represents 30% of the château's production.

Representing 30% of the crop, the 2023 Pavillon Rouge has a very pure and floral bouquet, with crushed violets and blue fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly grainy tannins and moderate depth, quite linear and structured in style with white pepper and a touch of brine on the saline finish. There’s good length, even if it’s missing the amplitude of the previous vintage.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Delicate herbal savouriness, a hint of clove and cardamom, dark cherry fruit, blackberry, fresh mandarin zest
are in the background. Juicy, delicate fruit sweetness, fine tannins, good freshness,
elegant and persistent, a finesse-rich food companion, mineral-salty finish.

Somewhat reminiscent of a cooler-fruited version of the lovely 2019, Château Margaux's 2023 Pavillon Rouge wafts from the glass with aromas of cassis, raspberries, licorice and pipe tobacco, deftly framed by creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a sweet core of fruit, ripe tannins and a lively, succulent profile, it's a blend 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% Merlot, 5% Petit Verdot and 2% Cabernet Franc that attained 13.3% alcohol.

Very Chateau Margaux, with perfumed violets, currants and other berries, as well as oranges. Medium body with fine, caressing tannins that are tight and vivid. Racy and refined. Brightness and beauty to this second wine. Succulent. Refined. One of the best Pavillon Rouges in a while. 30% of the production. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 14% merlot, 5% petit verdot and 2% cabernet franc.

Subtle aromatics, dried flowers, pot pourri, rose, blackcurrant and raspberry. Deep purple colour to the rim, vibrant but intense, some graphite and herbal Cabernet notes on the nose too. Bright and sharp, quite linear and a touch austere at this point, lean and straight - well defined and focussed with lovely fruit intensity and purity. Not fleshy, but there's lots of energy and precision to this. Very classic and will round out nicely. 14% press wine. 60% new oak. 2% Cabernet Franc completes the blend. 68 IPT, 3.6pH, 30% second wine production.
