Moulin Saint-Georges - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Moulin Saint-Georges, the secret cru of the Vauthier family

Château Moulin Saint-Georges faces Château Ausone, weaving a physical bond in addition to the family link. Located in the southern part of Saint-Émilion, a stone’s throw from the entrance to the village, this exclusive property came into the family’s possession in 1921, with the Vauthiers now representing the fifth generation. The Fongaban stream has been flowing for millennia and reminds us that Man is only passing through to enhance this vineyard sitting on a limestone slope with natural drainage thanks to this precious river. A mill, part of the Saint-Georges fiefdom, was located where the estate’s cellar now stands.

The Château Moulin-Saint-Georges vineyard covers 8 hectares in which Merlot reigns supreme, alongside a few plots of Cabernet Franc.

The 2023 Vintage

Just like at Château Ausone, the hillside plots managed to excel despite the delicate climatic conditions. Meticulous vineyard work focused on controlling vigor and managing vegetation cover. Ripeness and balance were optimal thanks to a dry and mild September.

Tasting notes

Deep and brilliant ruby in color. The aromas reveal a palette of red berry fruits with subtle vanilla notes. On the palate, the attack is lively and leads to a beautiful balanced framework with spicy notes. The smooth elegance of the Merlot harmonizes with taut and silky tannins, extending to a persistent finish.

A blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, the 2023 Moulin Saint-Georges has a deep garnet-purple color. It features fragrant notions of rose bud tea and cinnamon stick, leading to a core of red and black plums, charcoal, and bay leaves. The medium-bodied palate offers refreshing red fruit and baking spice flavors, with a lively line and plush tannins, finishing on an earthy note.

Moulin St-Georges (Saint Émilion; 85% Merlot; 15% Cabernet Franc; tasted at Ausone with Alain Vauthier). Fuller, richer, more plush and plump than de Fonbel. Old school in its aromatics but with a lovely luminous mid-palate. A broader frame, not overly stuffed other than with fruit and stretched wide to give this more crystallinity. Succulent. Juicy and sapid. Wild herbs and a note of heather on the finish. Lovely.

Flowers, cherries, black raspberries, and plums offer the wines fragrant profile. The wine is elegant, silky, fresh, medium-bodied, and energetic, with a soft, supple, creamy, black cherry, licorice, and earthy finish, with just hint of cocoa on the backend. 85% percent Merlot, with 15% Cabernet Franc create the blend. Drink from 2027-2042. 92-94 Pts.

Grip and length, grilled campfire smoke, slate texture, nuanced blueberry and raspberry fruits, cold ash and pumice stone. West exposure for the slopes here means cooler temperatures and lower ph, fresh acidities, helps accentuate this oyster shell salinity.

The 2023 Moulin Saint-Georges emerges from a small, 7-hectare property in front of Ausone. The richer side of the year comes through in the wine's dark blue/purplish fruit profile, lavender, licorice and spice notes. There's a bit of tannin here, but élevage should help this come together. The Moulin Saint-Georges includes 100% new oak, quite a statement of intent at this level.

The 2023 Moulin Saint-Georges was picked from September 21 to 29 and matured for 18 months in new oak. The élevage shapes this Saint-Émilion nicely. It’s a little woody at first, but that dissipates nicely with a few swirls of the glass, revealing a refreshing, marine-influenced bouquet. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth entry, quite a sensual and fleshy Moulin Saint-Georges, though the new oak is quite vocal and dominates the finish. There’s good potential here, but I would like more terroir to come through once in bottle.

Dark ruby, purple reflections, subtle brightening on the edge. Delicate herbal savou- riness, in the background some red forest berries, a hint of liquorice, candied orange zest, floral touch, inviting bouquet. Medium body, hints of cloves, pleasant freshness, mineral and persistent, a touch of nougat in the finish, has good ageing potential, a refined food wine.

The Vauthier family produced a slightly oaky, complex 2023 Moulin St Georges with aromas of vanilla, spices and dark wild berries. Medium to full-bodied, dense and rich with chewy tannins and a taut, chalky texture, it’s perfectly balanced with a fleshy texture and a long, penetrating finish. This blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc will spend 18 months in new oak barrels.

The tannins provide a powdery and layered sense to this, spreading across the palate. It's full and layered with firm depth and length. Blueberries and crush stones. Four-square. Some limestone with the clay. 85% merlot and 15% cabernet franc.
