Le Prieuré - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

A new era for this Saint-Emilion gem

In 2020, Les Terroirs de Suravenir, a subsidiary of the Arkea Credit Mutuel Group that already owns Château Calon Ségur, invested on the right bank by buying châteaux Prieuré, Vray Croix de Gay and Siaurac. True to their values, they have a long-term approach. In their ambitious development project, the teams are guided by the respect of history and the revelation of the potential of the terroir.

Château Le Prieuré, an outstanding diversity

Château Le Prieuré is a 6.24-hectare vineyard located immediately alongside the medieval town. Its vineyard dating back to the 16th century is located between Trottevieille, Troplong Mondot, and Pavie Macquin, above the old town, facing Ausone. The vines grow on Saint-Emilion’s limestone plateau and on the south-facing clay-limestone slopes. It is a unique and exceptional location, with panoramic views over the Dordogne valley, where several elements contribute to the site’s rich biodiversity: low stone walls, hedgerows, fruit trees, terraces, copses, etc.

The 2023 Vintage:

2023 is the symbol of the renewal of the last three years, as Vray Croix de Gay takes on a new label.

The flowers and black raspberries in the nose easily grab your focus. On the palate, the wine is silky, vibrant, and fresh, with lift, energy, and waves of creamy raspberries, cherries, and spice to top things off. The wine is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2045.

The 2023 Le Prieuré is plump, juicy and expressive, all qualities that will be easy to appreciate on release. Soft contours wrap around a core of black cherry, gravel, licorice, spice, menthol and new leather. There's gorgeous textural depth and resonance here. This understated, brilliant Saint-Émilion is all charm. Brisk acids typical of this sector really explode on the back end. As always, Le Prieuré is a wine of sophistication and finesse more than of power.

The 2023 Le Prieuré, the first to be made in smaller vats, has another discreet bouquet following on from its stablemate, Vray Croix de Gay, clean, precise and focused with blackberry and raspberry fruit, undergirded by subtle crushed stone notes. The palate is medium-bodied with a little creaminess on the entry that belies the structure underneath. Quite classical in style with admirable sapidity, this is a classy Saint-Émilion that will age in bottle for up to 15 years, possibly more. Very fine.

Le cru commence à exprimer tout son potentiel, avec une vraie dimension minérale qui prend désormais du fruit en bouche. Il a de la classe.

Puyblanquet (Saint Émilion; 80% Merlot; 20% Cabernet Franc; just 11 of the 19 hectares here are in production with significant replanting underway; just in front of Pressac, next to Boutisse; 14.2% alcohol; tasted at La Gaffelière with Thomas Soubes). Beautiful in its intensely dark fruited aromatic profile. Plump but sleek and plush. Brambles and blackberries. A hint of cedar and graphite. Lovely texture and nicely chiselled. Very pure and lithe. Excellent. Luminous at the core and with lovely powdery chalky tannins on the finish. This gets better each year.

Quite floral in nature, you also find black raspberries, marine influences, orange, and flowers in the perfume. The wine is medium-bodied, elegant, energetic, and silky-textured on the palate, with freshness, ripe fruits, and a complicating touch of salt in the finish. The wine is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc.14.5% ABV, 3.5 pH. Drink from 2027-2045. 92-94 Pts.

The 2023 Le Prieuré is a model of classicism and refinement. Dark, sensual and inviting, Le Prieuré is one of the most refined wines in Saint-Émilion. In recent vintages, it has always been a wine of tension. This iteration includes parcels from the neighboring châteaux, where there is a bit more clay. Consequently, the 2023 has a bit more mid-palate texture than most years, yet it retains its vibrant, saline intensity. I loved it. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Le Prieuré, a property where the new winery will come into operation from 2024, was cropped at 35hL/ha between September 9 and 29. It has much more fruit concentration than its stablemate, Vray Croix de Gay: black plum mixed with Provençal herbs and a light ferrous tincture. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins and a keen line of acidity, remaining fresh and vibrant as it gently fans out toward the composed and satisfying finish. I really like this—a fine Saint-Émilion from winemaker Vincent Millet.

The 2023 Le Prieuré is the first vintage from this estate to incorporate newly acquired parcels in Villemaurine, lending the wine some additional mid-palate amplitude. Offering up aromas of dark berries, cherries, bay leaf and incense, it's medium-bodied, lively and textural, with a bright spine of acidity that reflects its limestone origins.

This is very focused, with lots of blue fruit alongside crushed stone and a chalky sensibility. Medium body. Solid core of fruit with freshness and salinity at the end. Clear nature to this. This is much better than 2022. From the owners of Calon Segur.
