Montlandrie - Castillon-Côtes de Bordeaux 2021

One of Denis Durantou’s estates.

Denis Durantou passed away in 2020 and was one of the greatest winemakers of the right bank. His daughters are proudly taking over the estate and carrying on this heritage.

Château Montlandrie is a 12 hectare vineyard established at the end of the 19th century by an italian family. Denis Durantou, passionate about the Right Bank where he owns many estates - L'Eglise Clinet, La Chenade, Saintayme in particular - bought Montlandrie in 2009. It was, he explained, the only terroir where he really wanted to vinify grapes in Bordeaux after gravels and Pomerol clays.

Because we are there in the clay-limestone soils that dominate the Dordogne, in the Castillon-Côtes-de-Bordeaux appellation, with a majority of Merlot and a planting density of six thousand feet per hectare for rich grapes and complex.

Here, Denis Durantou, and now his daughters, have the same requirement and precision as in their other domains, giving a unique signature to their wines.

The 2021 Montlandrie is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, plum, gravel, incense, scorched earth, tobacco, menthol and clove are dialed up. En primeur, Montlandrie was on the lighter side, but it has gained quite a bit of volume in the mid-palate with aging. It will be interesting to see if this softens. The 2021 is an intriguing wine that may well surprise in time.

The 2021 Montlandrie, a blend of 75% Merlot (picked between the 30th of September and the 8th of October), 20% Cabernet Franc (picked on the 4th of October), and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon (picked on the 7th of October), reveals a dark, somber character with aromas of spices, pencil lead, licorice and wild dark berries. Enrobing and structuring with a medium-bodied palate, it’s elegantly concentrated with a fleshy core of fruit and a mineral, saline finish. Recommended.

This is a spectacular Montlandrie. I often find this wine rather oppressively oaky and tannic in its youth, but this 2021 is exceptionally civilised, and while it is underpinned with tension and considerable potential, it is already easy to see the beautiful plum and cherry fruit as well as the earthiness and elemental power of its soils. This is a hidden weapon in 2021, and the flavour is akin to a cross between the luxury of Pomerol and the grandeur of Saint-Emilion. Do all you can to secure some stock. 17.5+

Perfumed and vibrant already, with a ripe, textured and creamy tannin frame. Pretty blue and purple fruit. Juicy finish. Salty. 75% merlot, 20% cabernet franc and 5% cabernet sauvignon.

The 2021 Château Montlandrie (75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon) has serious potential and will unquestionably be an outstanding wine. More closed and reductive, with beautiful cassis fruits and hints of graphite and minerality, it's medium-bodied and delivers solid richness and depth, ripe tannins, and a great finish. It's a surprisingly powerful wine in the vintage and will benefit from 2-3 years in the cellar. 90-92+

Toucher de tannin encore compact, le cœur de bouche plein et la finale montante laissent envisager le meilleur dans les cinq ans qui viennent.

Medium-deep crimson. Fresh graphite, dark plum fruits with chinotto notes. Sweet fruited dark plum, blackberry, briary flavours and abundant brambly/ sappy tannins. Grippy firm finish. Densely packed, elemental wine, but will the tannins soften out? 75% merlot, 20% cabernet franc, 5% cabernet sauvignon. 50% new French oak.

As a Castillon wine produced from clay-dominated soil, Montlandrie manages to show exceptional concentration, incredibly high alcohol level (14%), and outstandingly ripe polyphenols in the cool and rainy 2021. Dancing and flowing around the glass are the rare aromas of ripe blackberry. In my opinion, its south-facing vineyard and windy microclimate are the secrets to its success in this vintage. ???????????Castillon???,Montlandrie??????????2021??????????????????????(14?)?????????,???????????????????????,??????????????????????????????

Crushed rocks, flowers, cocoa and ripe, dark plums create the perfume. On the palate, the wine is fresh, soft, bright and crisp, with a juiciness to the fruits on the mid-palate and in the medium-bodied finish, with its touch of salty tannins on the backend. The wine blends 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14% ABV. The harvest took place October 4 - October 7. Drink from 2023-2035. 90-92

The 2021 Montlandrie, the Durantou family's Lalande de Pomerol, was picked between 30 September and 8 October, matured in 50% new oak. A mélange of red and black fruit on the nose, light liquorice and freshly-rolled tobacco scents surface with just a few swirls. The palate is well structured and focused, fresh and displays well-integrated oak, though perhaps Les Cruzelles as a little more panache at this early stage.

The 2021 Montlandrie is another attractive wine in this range from the Durantou family. Sweet floral and spice overtones meld into a core of red/purplish berry fruit. In 2021, Montlandrie is a bit on the light side, but all the elements are nicely balanced.

Légèrement réduit avec des notes d'iris, de violette, de fruits noirs et de réglisse. Bouche droite, légèrement tannique avec une belle fraicheur mentholée.

A blend of 75% Merlot, 20% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2021 Montlandrie exhibits aromas of rich berries and cherries mingled with loamy soil, spices and potpourri. Medium to full-bodied, lively and incisive, it's nicely concentrated, with fine depth at the core and a bright, saline finish. Its Côtes de Castillon origins mark this out as the most tensile, mineral wine in the Durantou portfolio.
