Meyney - Saint-Estèphe 2022

Château Meyney, the "Virtuosity"

Since 1625, the estate has known only 4 owners in 400 years. In 2004 Crédit Agricole purchased this estate, ideally located in Saint-Estèphe, between the vines of Calon Ségur and Montrose.

In 2021, th "Virtuosity" project is launched: Contraction of 3 ideas at the heart of the estate's commitment, Green - Virtuous - Virtuoso, this project is symbolized by the launch of the conversion to Organic Farming. It also allows the recognition of many virtuous initiatives: the viti-pastoralism with the housing of 4 oxen, the planting of hedges and the installation of beehives.

The 2022 vintage

2022 in synonymous of generosity, excellence, progression and openness.
This vintage is grandiose, successful, deep and full of promises.
The 2022 Petit Verdot was the most remarkable in living memory. It completes the blend to make a superb Meyney, which is sure to join the ranks of the property’s finest vintages. It promises to be concentrated, intense, juicy, fresh and incomparably well balanced

Despite facing various challenges such as hail, fires, and high temperatures, Château Meyney still impresses with its resilience. As soon as I bring the glass to my nose, I am greeted with the fragrance of violets, followed by juicy cherries and tart berries. Compared to other vintages, the tannins in the 2022 vintage are noticeably strong, if the finish could be smoother, it would undoubtedly be even better.

The 2022 Meyney has turned out very well, offering up aromas of crème de cassis, bay leaf and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, supple and fleshy palate that's rich and seamless, exhibiting an integration of tannin that can't always be taken for granted at this address. In fact, this appears to be the best Meyney produced for quite some time, and it's well worth seeking out.

Well balanced ripe red fruits, creamy without being overly exuberant, tomato leaf and rosebud interwoven with damson and red cherry fruits, good stuff, one to share.

While I wasn't able to taste the 2022 Château Meyney En Primeur, it's a beauty now from bottle. Needing air to show at its best, this deep purple-hued Saint-Estèphe has a ripe, powerful nose of darker currants, chocolate, smoked tobacco, and cedar pencils. This carries to a full-bodied Meyney that has a broad, layered mouthfeel, ripe, velvety tannins, beautiful overall balance, and a great finish. It's accessible even today with a decant, but it's going to take a decade to hit maturity and will age gracefully on its concentration and depth.

The 2022 Meyney has an intense, finely delineated bouquet with blackberry, bilberry, loam and light briny scents that unfold with confidence. The palate is medium-bodied, fresh and vibrant, with firm tannins. It is not dissimilar to the Lilian Ladouys in style, though there is a touch more finesse and pepperiness on the finish. It has good potential, but needs time.

This always represents good value. Spicy, stony and floral at the same time with deep blue fruit and hints of pine, incense and cloves. Veins of tannins show a mineral verve. This is firm, powerful and long. A bit too young at this stage but already showing potential. A very good vintage. Drink after 2028.

The 2022 Meyney is a serious overachiever. Dark, virile and imposing, the 2022 packs a serious punch. Black fruit, cedar, leather, licorice, dried herbs and espresso are beautifully amplified. Swaths of tannin wrap it all together in style. Impressive.

93-95 Barrel sample. Dense blackberry fruits go along with the rich tannins. The spicy wood flavors are a layer under the fine fruits. It has a future of ripe tannins and black fruits.

Intensely fragrant and perfumed. Fresh and full on the palate, really quite ripe and concentrated fruit with tannins that are super ripe too - fleshy, almost like eating grape skins, so it's a touch dry but there's a really pleasing coolness too which stops it from being too much. On the whole quite tannic but a good punch of fruit too. Massy and a little unfussy unrefined. Tannins are doing the talking. Harvest 14 September-5 October. Yield of 37hl/ha. pH 3.75.

Deep crimson. Blackcurrant, black olive herb gadren aromas. Supple and sweet fruited, inky Parma violet. Supple sweet tannins, lovey volume and mineral length. Quite soft and fleshy. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot)

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Meyney comes skipping out with delightful notes of wild blueberries, redcurrant jelly, and juicy plums, leading to hints of chocolate mint and lilacs. The medium to full-bodied palate is generously fruited, with a solid frame of grainy tannins to match, finishing with just enough freshness.

Leafy herbs, tobacco, currants, spice, and spearmint notes show easily in the nose, and on the long, rich palate. The wine finishes with creamy-textured currants, cocoa, spearmint, and bitter chocolate on the end note. This should age quite nicely. Drink from 2026-2045.

Opening in the glass with aromas of sweet dark berries, licorice and petals, the 2022 Meyney is medium to full-bodied, deep and concentrated, with a fleshy core of fruit girdled by sweet but firm tannins. Pure and taut, it is a strong effort that will require a bit of patience. 91 - 93+

Impressive concentration here with compact tannin structure. Medium- to full-bodied. Firm and steady with a long, velvety finish. Minerally and crunchy.
