Lilian Ladouys - Saint-Estèphe 2022

Lilian Ladouys & the Lorenzetti family, love at first sight

In 2008, Jacky and Françoise Lorenzetti bought the estate after falling instantly in love with it. They brought passion and ambition to this new project.
In 2018, the handover began with the arrival of Manon Lorenzetti. Guided by the same ambition as her parents, she brought new energy to their project. Manon wants to keep pushing towards best practices in the vineyard, that her parents initiated in 2009 alongside Vincent Bache-Gabrielsen and his team. In 2021, the main part of the replanting program is over and Manon decided to launch the conversion of the vineyard to Organic Farming.

In 2020 the efforts of the family paid off when Château Lilian Ladouys was named Cru Bourgeois Exceptionnel

The 2022 vintage

Tasting notes

With Merlot narrowly dominating the blend and a historically high percentage of Petit Verdot,Château Lilian Ladouys 2022 is broodingly dark in colour, revealing multi-layered aromas of dark fruits, violets and spices. It is rich and balanced in structure, not too overpowering. Round and taut on the palate, with silky, soft tannins : all the hallmarks of a very great vintage.

The 2022 vintage of Château Lilian Ladouys is like a kaleidoscope, ever-changing and enchanting. With every swirl of the glass, a new aroma emerges, from the delicate scent of cherry blossoms to the deep, rich aroma of black mulberries. Its possibilities seem endless. On the palate, it is clear and graceful, like eating a strawberry jelly with popping pearls. The gentle acidity gives it an ethereal freshness, making Château Lilian Ladouys stand out even more in the 2022 vintage.

Great aromatics here, touch of austerity to the architecture but the tannins soften through the palate to show a creamy, silky texture, plenty of grip, spiced blackberry, fennel and cherry pit, fresh lift on the finish, this is one to look out for, with an unusually high amount of Petit Verdot in the blend after losing 30% of the crop through hail and frost in northern St Estèphe. 33% new oak, 400l barrels for 20% of the wine, clay gravel soils over limestone, Jacky Lorenzetti owner.

Ripe black cherries, new leather, spring flowers, and graphite nuances all emerge from the 2022 Château Lilian Ladouys, a medium to full-bodied, nicely concentrated Saint-Estèphe that has ripe tannins, nicely integrated background oak, and a layered, balanced profile that will evolve gracefully going forward. It’s always a good value, as well as a worthy addition to any cellar, and the 2022 is no exception.

The 2022 Lilian Ladouys retains a somewhat understated bouquet with blackberry, damp loam and wild hedgerow scents that need quite a bit of coaxing from the glass. The palate is medium-bodied with an herbal opening and grippy tannins, but a vegetal element, albeit minor, knocks it off course on the finish. This is quite rustic. It will be interesting to see how this will develop. Tasted three times.

Fresh and nicely reductive in style, full of crunchy dark cherries and lightly spiced currants and minerals. Good midpalate tension rounded by fine-grained, stony tannins with medium high acidity and some dried herbs and spices extending to a medium-long finish. 52% merlot, 40% cabernet sauvignin and 8% petit verdot. Drink from 2027.

The 2022 Lilian Ladouys is distinguished by its intensely aromatic, savory bouquet. Medium in body, with lovely persistence and fine balance, the 2022 is very nicely done. Pungent aromatics give this a decidedly eccentric character.

Gorgeous intensity on the nose, vivid and expressive. Rich and well textured on the palate, a lovely succulence and gentle expression with super fine tannins and dark fruit elements alongside mineral notes of salt, liquorice, iodine and crushed stones. Structured and well worked, a little tense and compact still but lovely expression with density and strength. HVE certified. In organic conversion. 3.85pH. Harvest: Merlot 13 September, Cabernets 19 September.

The 2022 Lilian Ladouys, which was picked from 8 September, has the highest proportion of Petit Verdot in recent years and is aged in one-third new oak. It is fragrant on the nose, blackberry intermixed with raspberry and loamy scents, perhaps more understated than I was expecting, yet it opens nicely with modest aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly angular tannins. Quite firm and very saline with a seaweed tang toward the slightly gritty finish. It doesn't quite "flow" as I would have liked, hence my prudent score. Tasted twice with consistent notes. NB There is no Deuxième Vin this year.

The 2022 Lilian Ladouys is a blend of 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot; with 33% being aged in new oak. The pH is 3.95 and the TPI is 75. There was some hail damage in June, so yields are lower than usual at 33 hl/ha. It has a deep garnet-purple color and bursts from the glass with bold notions of juicy black plums, black cherry preserves, and crushed redcurrants, leading to hints of menthol and crushed rocks. The medium-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating black fruits, with a firm, grainy texture and seamless freshness, finishing with a minty lift.

From a château that lost 40% of their production due to hail, the 2022 Château Lilian Ladouys checks in as 52% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 8% Petit Verdot. A rich, medium to full-bodied, balanced Saint-Estèphe, it offers pure plum and darker cherry fruits, some chocolate and leafy herb nuances, ripe tannins, and a concentrated, textured mid-palate. It's beautifully done, and I suspect it will represent a great value as well. 91-93+

The 2022 Lilian Ladouys is a dense, powerful wine. In most vintages, Lilian Ladouys is a bit lighter, but in 2022 everything is amplified. A shift in parcels and the style of the year have resulted in a serious, punchy wine with real breadth. Savory and earthy notes add complexity. Drinking window : 2025-2034

Flowers, blackberries, peppery spice, and wet earth with a touch of powdered chocolate create the nose. On the palate, the wine is round, lush, sweet, and fresh. The black raspberries are peppery, spicy, and vibrant with an olive, and tobacco leaf accent on the mid-palate, and in the finish. The wine blends 52% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and 8% Petit Verdot. 13.97% ABV. Drink from 2025-2038.

A Merlot-dominant blend, the 2022 Lilian Ladouys offers up rich aromas of dark berries, violets, charcoal and rose petals, followed by a medium to full-bodied, fleshy palate framed by rich, youthfully firm tannins that assert themselves on the finish. Impacted by hail and with a very elevated pH of 3.95, this is something of a blunt instrument.
