Ormes de Pez - Saint-Estèphe 2022

Ormes de Pez, the expertise of the Cazes Family

Château Ormes de Pez belongs to the Médoc landscape since the 18th century. Located West of Saint-Estèphe and bordering the hamlet of Pez, the estate owes its name to a magnificent grove of elm trees, which no longer exists today. Château Ormes de Pez is the second property – after Château Lynch-Bages – acquired by the Cazes family in 1939.

The vineyard extends over two distinct terroirs: the Cabernets thrive on the gravelly parcels composed of quartz and rolled pebbles whereas Merlot is best-suited to the cooler, sandy-clay parcels. With a distinctive harmonious spicy character, Château Ormes de Pez is true to its terroir.

Wine lovers appreciate its opulence, elegance and well-rounded structure. Its powerful, rich and excellent tannic backbone allows graceful ageing.

The 2022 Ormes de Pez offers up an exotic, aromatic bouquet of sweet red fruit compote and flowers, followed by a medium-bodied palate with a rich, soft attack that segues into a somewhat tannic, ephemeral finish. It's a solid, modern-styled Saint-Estèphe.

Trace of gunsmoke on the opening, needs a moment to clear and open to show the rich ripe brambled fruit. This is enjoyable, orange peel, mandarin, pomegranate, cloves, flash of crème de cassis on the finish. 45% new oak for ageing, 40ha vineyard, Cazes family owners.

The 2022 Château Ormes De Pez is based on 51% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Rocking levels of black cherries, red plums, spicy wood, and tobacco all emerge from this round, medium to full-bodied, voluptuous, sexy 2022 that's already hard to resist. It's going to have at least two decades of longevity.

The 2022 Ormes de Pez, aged in 45% new oak, has a very perfumed and pure bouquet featuring black cherry, raspberry, cedar and iodine scents. Perhaps it needs a little more Saint Estèphe character to filter through? The palate is medium-bodied and well balanced, with grainy tannins and a core of black fruit mixed with cracked black pepper and a pinch of sea salt. There is pleasing sapidity and a touch of graphite lingering on the Pauillac-styled aftertaste. This is very fine.

This is a solid red with plenty of muscle in the Ormes de Pez way. It’s medium- to full-bodied with dense and chewy tannins that are polished yet lightly austere. Blackcurrants, nutmeg and other spices such as thyme. Nicely austere in a very St.-Estephe way. Drink after 2028.

This is stylish in the way it captures the warm cassis and mulled plum fruit of the vintage, along with the AOC's telltale warm stone, lilac and iron accents. The long, smoldering finish pulls everything together thanks to a subtle chalky thread. Understated and nicely done. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2026 through 2038.

Dark plums and blackcurrants, ripe and fragranced on the nose, aromatic and open. High, juicy acidity is balanced by fine but chalky tannins and a flint undertone giving the minerality and tension. Powerful and massy, strong but well contained, focussed and all in one line. Good weight and balance, quite a serious and spiced edge but with lots of freshness throughout. A little strict and herbal, with the wood showing through, but lovely fruit purity. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. 3.88pH. Ageing 16 months, 45% new oak. Tasted twice. Harvest 19 September - 28 September.

The 2022 Ormes de Pez is matured in 45% new oak for a planned 16 months. It has a perfumed and floral bouquet, quite sensual for a Saint-Estèphe, developing blue fruit with time in the glass. The oak is neatly enmeshed. The palate is medium-bodied with quite a high-toned and racy opening. Good acidity, the Merlot (51%) occupies the driving seat and ensures its silky-textured finish, a mote of chalk dust on the aftertaste. Just needs its élevage to knit it all together.

Deep crimson. Elderberry, dark plum, dark cherry aromas with hints of vanilla/ nougat. Dense almost soupy textured wine with fresh elderberry, dark berry vanilla marzipan flavours, fresh velvety/ chocolaty tannins and well integrated mineral acidity. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot 45% new oak)

A blend of 51% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc, and 2% Petit Verdot, the 2022 Ormes de Pez is deep garnet-purple in color. It flies out with ready-to-go notes of crushed black cherries, juicy blueberries, and warm plums, plus wafts of underbrush, lavender, and pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate delivers a sturdy backbone of firm, grainy tannins and just enough freshness to support the generous black fruits, finishing earthy. pH 3.88, TPI 84.

Another brilliant Saint-Estèphe, the 2022 Château Ormes De Pez offers up lots of ripe blue and black fruits as well textbook earth, crushed stone, and graphite. Showing more nuance and floral notes with time in the glass, this medium to full-bodied effort has plenty of mid-palate depth, velvety yet building tannins, and nicely integrated background oak. This serious wine is worth seeking out. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Ormes de Pez is bold, pungent and savory, in classic Saint-Estèphe style. Gravel, cured meats, spice and leather give the 2022 a good bit of aromatic and flavor complexity. Medium in body, with good depth, the 2022 has a ton to offer. This is a terrific showing. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2026-2037

Black currants, and spice form the core of this wine. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine is sweet, vibrant, and packed with black fruits, wet earth, spice, cedar, and leafy tobacco. Soft, round, and generous, the peppery black fruit in the finish really works here. The wine is a blend of 51% Merlot, 39% Cabernet Sauvignon, 8% Cabernet Franc and 1% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2025-2042.
