Marquis d'Alesme - Margaux 2021

Château Marquis d'Alesme, at the crossroads between East and West

At the heart of the Bordeaux region - precisely in Margaux - there is a wine that is a world in its own right. Under the watchful eye of a family, this wine full of character brings the Orient and the West together. Dragon scales and moon gates stand alongside columns and arcades in perfect harmony. A sea of vines stretches before us, with the Rising Sun on its horizon.

His taste for challenges and his eagerness to breathe new life into a potential treasure led him to acquire Château Marquis d'Alesme in 2006, a third Classified Growth in 1855, whose estate he undertook to overhaul completely.

Today, it's Nathalie Perrodo that embodies the values of her family on the wineries they own, Château Labégorce, Château Marquis d'Alesme and La Tour de Mons.

One of the most concentrated wines in the vintage, the 2021 Château Marquis D'Alesme still stays balanced and classy. Red and black fruits, graphite, smoked tobacco, and some cedar pencil notes all define the aromatics, and it's medium to full-bodied, with a layered, textured mid-palate, ripe tannins, and a great finish. Based on 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, aged in 60% new barrels, give it just a few years and enjoy over the following 10-12+.

The 2021 Marquis d’Alesme is an elegant, polished wine for the year. Floral and spice notes open first. Dark cherry, plum, spice, menthol, dried herbs, leather and cedar emerge gradually, but it is the wine's balance that impresses most.

Aromas of dark berries, baked plums, licorice and pencil shavings introduce the 2021 Marquis d'Alesme, a medium to full-bodied, fleshy and charming wine built around powdery tannins that assert themselves on the youthfully firm finish.

This has bouncy, crisp acidity running through black cherry and damson plum notes, while light earth and cedar accents shade the finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2027. 4,500 cases made.  –JM

Dark ruby in colour, this has been carefully handled, pushing a litle further with the extraction than some, and the violet reflection around the edge of the glass suggests it has worked well. Vivid character to the blueberry and raspberry fruits, cola and cocoa bean. Doesn't have the succulence of some recent vintages of Marquis d'Alesme but beautiful spice and plenty of momentum. Good stuff, an upscore. 60% new oak for ageing, harvest September 30 to October 14, 32hl/h yield.

Another beautiful wine that shines for its texture and balance, the 2021 Château Marquis d'Alesme (51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, and the rest Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc) sports a deep purple hue to go with a focused, vibrant nose of blue fruits, spice box, and integrated oak. It's medium-bodied on the palate, has ripe, silky tannins, and again, remarkable balance and purity.

Marquis d’Alesme 2021 presents a more delicate image, with a natural, smooth palate and intricate, soft tannins. Although it does not have stunningly complex fruitiness, its approachable nature should still appeal to many fans who are values elegance. If the tannins become silkier on the finish, it will be even better. Marquis d’Alesme 2021??????,?????????????,??????????????,??????????????????????????????????????????????,????????

Cedar, flowers, cocoa, mint leaf and red fruits shine in the nose. On the palate, the wine is elegant, soft, fresh and juicy, with a fruity mid-palate and a refreshing, savory edge to the finish. The wine blends 51% Cabernet Sauvignon, 40% Merlot, 6% Petit Verdot and 3% Cabernet Franc. 13% ABV. Drink from 2024-2044. 91-93

The 2021 Marquis d'Alesme Becker was picked from 30 September and 14 October, matured 50% new oak. Now, this has a lovely bouquet with iris flower infusing the lifted black fruit, fine mineralité here. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, fine grip, slightly saline with a bit of sinew on the finish. Fine sense of energy here, though it does not fan out like the 2019 or 2020, i.e. it reflects the growing season.

The 2021 Marquis 'Alesme is packed with inky dark fruit, licorice, lavender, spice, graphite and new leather. Although not exactly the last word in finesse, the 2021 certainly packs a good bit of punch. Incisive tannins will need a few years to settle down.

Leuchtendes Rubin.

This 15-hectare estate has produced the Perrodo family's most serious, structured wine this year in the form of the 2021 Marquis d'Alesme. Exhibiting aromas of raspberries, red cherries, violets and blood orange, it's medium to full-bodied, with powdery tannins, lively acids and creditable persistence on the finish.
