Malescot Saint Exupery - Margaux 2021

Malescot Saint-Exupéry, "Semper Ad Altum"

"Semper Ad Altum: latin expression which means "Ever higher"

Château Malescot St-Exupéry owes its name to two former owners: Simon Malescot, a royal councillor to the Bordeaux parliament, who acquired the estate in 1697, and Count Jean-Baptiste de Saint-Exupéry, who owned it from 1827 to 1853.

In June 1955, Paul Zuger and his son, Roger, purchased the château, located in the heart of Margaux. Since 1994, Jean-Luc Zuger, son of Roger Zuger, has managed the property.
Today, after more than sixty years of unstinting efforts, Malescot St-Exupéry’s coat of arms, "Semper Ad Altum", has never been truer. Malescot due to its small size - 28 hectares - is today one of the smallest Grands Crus Classés 1855, but also one of the closest to its original terroir of 1697.

The 2021 vintage

A mild winter, a cool spring, a cold summer... We have chosen to leave the grapes on the vines as long as possible so that the vegetal character fades to be replaced by the fruit.

Today, the Malescot 2021 stands out as a classic, tender and precise. It expresses very well the terroirs and the nuances of the cepages. Delicious, full of vivacity, the Malecot 2021 shares its balance and vitality with us.

The 2021 Malescot St. Exupéry is beautiful—a wine that isn't trying to be too much in this challenging vintage. Floral aromatics and silky tannins give this mid-weight edition of Malescot quite a bit of charm. All the elements are so nicely balanced. Crushed flowers, dark red/purplish fruit, mint, spice and a dash of orange peel linger. This is nicely done.

The 2021 Malescot St. Exupery has turned out nicely in its fleshy, flamboyant style, bursting with aromas of dark berries, cherries and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and seamless, with supple tannins and a lively core of fruit, it's a strong effort.

Very floral with black currant and black cherry aromas with hints of lavender. Floral. Medium-bodied with firm and silky tannins that show beautiful length and polish. Goes on for a long time for the vintage. Classy. Drink after 2026.

The oak is dominant and spicy, and the tannins seem pretty raw, but there is a mass of fruit in this wine's core, so they have done something right in the vineyard. It will fall into line early in its life and provide rather exciting, hectic flavours, and then I expect it to run out of gas, or rather balance! But there is good fun and some genuine flair here, so dive in for early drinking if the price is right. 16.5

A tight and focused young red with redcurrant and blackberry character. It’s medium-bodied with racy and fine tannins and a linear, focused finish. Lots going on, yet it’s tight and energetic.

Beautifully balanced, the 2021 Château Malescot Saint Exupéry is a classic, impressive 2021 that's worth seeking out. Darker fruits, spice, dried herbs, and a kiss of flowers all emerge on the nose, and it's medium-bodied, has ripe tannins, and shows the pretty, graceful style of the vintage.

Du naturel d’expression et une aromatique très cabernet. Nez légèrement musqué et épicé, unitaire, complexe et savoureux, comme à son habitude.

Malescot Saint-Exupéry maintains its fresh and juicy style in the vintage of 2021, with delicate, silky and smooth entry of the palate. Although the complexity of its aromas is not pronounced, its fragrance of violet is very adorable. Even though it does not have the complexity of hot vintages on the palate, for fans who are into lively Margaux wine, Malescot Saint-Exupéry 2021 should be a good choice. Initially you notice the brightness in the fruits before moving to the flowers, tobacco leaf, espresso, smoke and earthy nuances. The wine is focused on its vibrancy, freshness and fleshy style, managing to find the perfect balance between all three characteristics. The wine is a blend of 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2027-2050. 92-94

The 2021 Malescot Saint Exupéry has quite a high-toned bouquet with black cherries, blueberry and violet aromas, exuberant compared to its peers. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit, fine acidity, quite focused yet there is just a little dryness and abruptness on the finish. That might be remedied during its élevage so let's see how this turns out. I was anticipating a bit more from this excellent Margaux estate, but maybe it will meliorate in barrel? Not beyond possibility.

The 2021 Malescot St. Exupéry is another terrific wine from a property that has been trending towards finesse. The 2021 represents another step in that direction, helped by the vintage, of course. Red cherry, iron, blood orange, spice, tobacco and cedar build as this mid-weight, savory Margaux shows off its considerable charms. Pretty floral top notes accent the finish. Tasted two times.

Leuchtendes Rubinrot.

The 2021 Malescot St. Exupery is a terrific effort, offering up aromas of sweet cassis and plums mingled with notions of licorice, espresso roast and toasty oak. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's impressively layered, with a sweet core of fruit, ripe tannins and lively acids. The dramatic style of the château has worked very well with the cooler, later-maturing vintage. The blend is 49% Cabernet Sauvignon, 38% Merlot, 8% Cabernet Franc and 5% Petit Verdot.
