Mangot (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Mangot, a Grand Cru Classé close to a vigneron

The Todeschini family, a wine lover family

If the origin of Château Mangot, Saint-Emilion Grand Cru, goes back to more than 5 centuries, its history takes a real turn in the 80's when the Todeschini family took over the management of the estate. Today, Karl and Yann Todeschini are the new generation that proudly represents the estate. Karl is a man of the field and passionate about nature, he manages the daily viticultural aspect, while Yann with his creative spirit, brings to Mangot a commercial dynamic and ensures the strategy and communication. A duo of brothers with only one goal: to give pleasure and emotion through wines of authors.

An ecological approach to produce wines with a genuine identity

A great wine is first and foremost made in the vineyard. Based on this principle, the Todeschini brothers have revolutionized their vineyard management. Officially certified "Organic Farming" since the 2020 vintage, the vineyard is in its third year of conversion to biodynamics. They are also working on the biological activity of the soil and on the nutritional balance of the plant in order to stimulate its natural defenses. This gardening work allows them to carry out vinifications with very little intervention and to produce sincere and expressive wines of great purity.

Unfortunately, the sample of Mangot at the first organised tasting had been wrongly picked at the château ... not that any of the other tasters noticed. So if you see other reviews noting similarity to the 2022, then you know that's because it was the 2022. (Incidentally, the same thing happened at two different tastings.) At the second, a quick call was made to the château, and a 2023 materialised! It has a lovely bouquet with black plum and raspberry coulis scents, the oak neatly integrated, more discrete and classical than the 2022. The palate is medium-bodied with pliant tannins. Good density and weight, black rather than red fruit laced with white pepper on the relatively bold finish. Give this a couple of years in bottle.

A solid red with aromas of dark berries and hints of roasted almonds, bark and dark earth, following through to a full body with juicy fruit and layers of tannins. A big wine for the vintage. From biodynamically grown grapes. A blend of 65% merlot, 30% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet sauvignon. Drink or hold.

The deep purple-hued 2023 Château Mangot is solid, offering medium to full-bodied aromas and flavors of darker, almost blue fruits as well as fresh herbs and sappy flowers. I've struggled with the wines from Mangot over the past few vintages, as I find a distinct, vegetal, celery character that develops in bottle. Whether this is related to something in the winemaking, pick dates, or just something I’m personally sensitive to (I know others think highly of these wines), I truthfully don’t know. Nevertheless, this certainly shows well at this stage. The blend is 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Franc.

Mangot (Saint Émilion; 65% Merlot; 30% Cabernet Franc; 5% Cabernet Sauvignon; Thomas Duclos is the consultant here). Vivant, vivid and wonderfully expressive both aromatically and on the palate, this exudes the spirit and health in the vineyard associated with biodynamic winemaking – you can feel it, you can scent it, you can taste it. Crystalline purity reinforced by those wondrous calcaire tannins and a great sense of dynamism and energy in the ultra-sapid and juicy mid-palate. My only qualm about this wine in the past was just a little too much oak; not here. This is truly great, above all on the context of the vintage.

Chocolate mint, with dark red berries is what you initially notice before you find the blackberries, black raspberries, and licorice in the nose. Lively, fresh, and pure on the palate, with lift to the dark chocolate overtones, crushed rocks, and juicy plums, the wine is more elegant than robust, with a refreshing, spearmint accented backend. Give it just a year, or two of aging, and enjoy it over the next 15 or more years with pleasure. The wine is produced from a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% ABV. Drink from 2027-2040. 92-94 Pts.

Vibrant ruby in colour plenty of violet reflections, attractive En Primeur colour and aromatics, with estate signature. Pretty fresh acidities, a little overly sharp, but there is plenty of raspberry and redcurrant fruit to counterbalance, and the whole thing feels full of life and tension. Todeschini family, Thomas Duclos consultant. 34ha, 25% new oak for ageing.

The 2023 Mangot is a heady, extroverted wine. Soaring Cabernet aromatics meld into a core of red cherry, plum, blood orange, spice, menthol and cinnamon. The 2023 offers an attractive combination of aromatic presence and textural creaminess. It's a big wine, to be sure. Tasted two times.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Fine floral nu- ances, fresh heart cherry, red forest berries, very inviting bouquet. Complex, tightly meshed, fresh berry fruit, mineral, ripe tannins, good savouriness on the finish, a hint of nougat in the aftertaste.

Another beautiful wine from this perpetually improving property, the 2023 Château Mangot delivers aromas of blackberries and mulberries mingled with hints of licorice, pencil shavings, bay leaf and violets. Medium to full-bodied, deep and layered, with a seamless, complete profile and impressive mid-palate density, it's a blend of 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon with élevage combining, as usual, new oak, used barriques, foudre and amphorae.

The density of fruit grabs your attention, showing fullness and richness with blue fruit and a hazelnut undertone. Chewy at the end of the polished and solid palate. Structured young wine.
