Croix de Labrie - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2023

Château Croix de Labrie, the gem of Saint-Emilion

The tiny plots of Château Croix de Labrie total an area of 5,2 hectares (12,85 acres) in the middle of the Saint-Émilion Grand Cru appellation area. Organic farming with biodynamic practices is applied to the vineyard that is managed like those in Burgundy. Château Croix de Labrie, Saint-Émilion Grand Cru Classé since 2022, is the jewel in the crown of the estate and is produced from parcels from different terroirs located near the most prestigious crus such as Pavie.

The story of Château Croix de Labrie is above all that of a couple of wine lovers, Axelle and Pierre Courdurié, who decided to start the adventure in 2013, immediately convinced of the potential of this mosaic of plots in the heart of the AOC Saint-Emilion Grand Cru. Axelle, an enthusiastic and determined winegrower, lives all year long to the rhythm of the vine and wine.

Rare and unique wines of Château Croix de Labrie are rich, dense, very fruity, with perfect ripeness. A very elegant very deep color, with lots of finesse. Croix de Labrie wine brings a lot of power, balance and freshness.

The 2023 vintage

Climatic conditions:

The vintage began with a warm autumn followed by a cold, wet winter, with a frost episode in early April of no consequence. The hot spring and stormy spells required extra vigilance in the vines, but flowering at the end of May took place under favorable conditions. A very sunny summer, without any excessive heatwave, enabled an even veraison, followed by a remarkable end to the season in September and during the Indian summer, with perfectly ripe and fresh Merlots, and exceptional Cabernets Sauvignon and Francs.

Tasting Notes:

The 2023 vintage is bright, aromatic, fresh, powerful, balanced, dense, complex, elegant, with multi-layers and intense. Notes of blackcurrant, violet and fresh wild blackberry combined with fine touches of crushed blueberry. The palate is fruity, elegant, balanced, fine, chiseled, very rounded with notes of liquorice, spicy, Sichuan pepper. The wine expresses notes of black fruits, blackberry, crushed blackcurrant, wild raspberry, small red berries, with hints of fresh blueberry. Very fine hints of toasted almond, crushed hazelnut and graphite. The wine evolves powerful, rich, full and straight, with finesse and elegance. Velvetiness combines with a joyful, very sapid energy. Very long persistence on the finish, freshness which brings palatability and deliciousness to the finish. A very great wine to keep.

The 2023 Croix de Labrie has a flamboyant nose with pure black cherry and crushed strawberry fruit interlaced with pressed violet petals. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, well-balanced, crisp and fresh with a nicely structured and linear finish. I think this is a classy and quite delicious Croix de Labrie.

Complex aromas of blackberries, pencil shavings, tar and black olives. Full-bodied with wonderful precision and verve. The flavors are similar to the aromas and give such beauty, presence and energy. Just a touch of salt at the end. Merlot and cabernet franc. It shows gentle strength. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2028, but already wonderful to drink.

The 2023 Château Croix De Labrie comes from 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc, aging 80% in barrels (70% new) and the balance in foudre and demi-muids. It has a vivid purple hue as well as a pretty, perfumed bouquet of black raspberries, cassis, spring flowers, and subtle spicy oak. it's certainly a prettier, more elegant wine from this terrific family, with medium to full body, supple tannins, terrific balance, and outstanding length. It's going to shine with just a few years of bottle age and is very much in the more juicy, focused style of the vintage.

La Croix de Labrie (Saint Émilion; 85% Merlot; 10% Cabernet Sauvignon; 5% Cabernet Franc; a final yield of 27 hl/ha, seemingly low primarily because of the average age of the vines at 60 years or so; pH 3.41; 14.2% alcohol; tasted twice, the second time at the property). This sings in harmony with the wonderful cool limestone of this part of the plateau. A little closed at first when tasted the first time, but much more open the second. Even when closed we learn much from the evolution of the wine as it slowly unfurls like a fern frond. Glorious aromatically, with lovely and very distinctive subtle but intense violet, pink rose and iris notes, a little graphite and black cherry. We are in the parfumier’s laboratory. Wild blueberries, damson skin and a little blackcurrant. Griotte cherry, blood orange (from the old vine Cabernet Sauvignon) with aeration (and this is a wine that needs time to open). This is beautifully ripe, beautifully balanced and with the most gracious of tannins. Incredibly layered. Tasted alongside quite a representative sample of mid to upper tier Saint Émilion grands crus and grands crus classés this really shines for the quality of the tannins, the crystalline purity of the mid-palate and the aromatic charm and singularity of the fruit and floral signature. Truly excellent and essentially juicy. So sapid and that reinforces the sense of linearity on the finish.

Deeply colored, the wine is rich, with dark red, black, and blueberries made even better with the addition of flowers, spice, licorice, and chocolate. There is ample freshness on the palate, paired with silky tannins, and a zesty, spicy, dark berry finish that leaves you with a light touch of citrus on the backend. The wine is produced and bottled with extremely low levels of sulfur. You can enjoy this young, or age it for more complexity, The wine blends 85% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 5% Cabernet Franc. This is the first vintage with this much Cabernet in the blend. 14.2% ABV. 3.4 pH. The yields were only 27 hectoliters per hectare. Drink from 2026-2050. 94-96 Pts.

The overall structure shows estate signature, concentrated but skilful and it works, showing a ton of fragrant dark spices, cumin, rosemary, sage, blueberry and raspberry fruits, vertical left through the palate that only happens in the really successful wine. 80% in barrels, 70% new oak for ageing. Good silver.

The 2023 Croix de Labrie is a dense, potent wine. A rush of blackberry jam, spice, lavender, chocolate and plums races across the palate. Hints of new leather and dried flowers appear later. This full-throttle, dense Saint-Émilion is dialed up to the maximum. The opulent style works well here. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Croix de Labrie has a refined and delineated bouquet of expressive black fruit laced with iris flower and violet. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, almost sensual opening. There is a slight savory touch here, but it’s elegant and refined on the finish. The 2023 is probably earlier-drinking than other vintages, but it’s nonetheless well-crafted and may well gain matière during barrel-maturation.

Dark ruby colour, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening at the edge. Fine nuances of old wood, vanilla, some nougat, in the background some ripe cherries, candied orange zest. Juicy, elegant, fresh acidity, a hint of liquorice, ripe tannins, fine acidity, mineral and salty finish, an elegant food wine.

This is very unique and spicy, with white pepper, salt, iodine and oyster shell. Blackberry and black licorice, too. Medium to full body with great freshness, but it’s very structured with fine and chewy tannins, before finishing fresh and energetic. Crunchy. 3.41 pH and 14.2% alcohol. 85% merlot, 10% cabernet sauvignon and 5% cabernet franc. All biodynamically grown grapes. Better than 2022?
