Lespault-Martillac Rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2022

The estate

Château Lespault-Martillac is an ancient estate located on a fine gravelly rise overlooking the commune of Martillac.

Since 2009, management has been entrusted to Domaine de Chevalier, a Graves great growth belonging to the Bernard family.
Olivier Bernard has a clear ambition: to realise the château’s outstanding potential and its aim of becoming one of the jewels of the Pessac-Léognan appellation.

If you’re looking to taste the most authentic Merlot blend from Pessac-Léognan at a reasonable price, Château Lespault-Martillac is undoubtedly an excellent choice. The fruit ripeness is simply perfect, and the acidity is surprisingly vibrant. The texture is delicate and smooth, with a powerful graphite essence lingering in the finish. To produce such a remarkable wine in the first year of organic certification is truly a testament to its “Grand Terroir”.

Attractive aromatics, bring you seamlessly in to the body of the wine. This is a Pessac that flies under the radar, but it's the same team as Domaine de Chevalier, and it's a real insider's Left Bank, one to look out for in the vintage. Damson and black cherry fruit, ripe but measured, as is the case across the whole stable. Good stuff, a value pick.

The 2022 Lespault-Martillac is showing very well today. Less oaky than during the en primeur tasting, it unfurls from the glass with aromas of cassis, mulberries, spices and mint. Medium to full-bodied, seamless and charming, it's textured with a fleshy core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, penetrating, fresh finish. This is a blend of 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon.

Red and black fruits, spicy wood, and savory, floral, tobacco-like nuances all emerge from the 2022 Château Lespault-Martillac, a pretty, medium-bodied Pessac that has sweet, integrated tannins, terrific overall balance, and a great finish. I love it today, yet it should have a solid 15+ years of prime drinking ahead of it. The 2022 is 65% Merlot and 35% Cabernet Sauvignon, all aged 18 months in 35% new French oak, with the balance in once-used barrels.

2026-2037 93/100

The 2022 Lespault-Martillac has developed nicely on the nose since I tasted it from barrel. It has quite exuberant blackberry and blueberry fruit tones that become more floral with fine delineation. The palate is medium-bodied and lightly spiced, with finely chiseled tannins, a dash of black pepper and impressive weight with a clean and peppery finish. This has good potential.

Green gold colour, attractive stone fruits, nectarine and white peach, soft waves of white pepper and sage spice, very enjoyable, good stuff. one to look out for. A nugget of honeysuckle and wax on the very final notes that hints at the vintage conditions, but this is well handled.

Spice with some iodine in addition to burnt oranges and dark fruits such as plums. Medium-bodied, this has velvety and firm tannins that give length and intensity. Needs three or four years to soften and come together. Drink after 2028.

The 2022 Lespault-Martillac is an elegant, restrained wine. Black cherry, new leather, licorice, dried flowers and a touch of new oak all meld together in this soft, supple Pessac-Léognan. This is very nicely done. This fleshes out beautifully on the mid-palate and into the finish.

Cool and fresh, a lovely minty creamy blue fruit aspect to this, concentrated and deep, there's an element of power to this which is clear from the start but because of the coolness it stops it from becoming too much. I love the sheer confidence here, plus the sleek texture, precise and on point. Tannic still, and not so concentrated fruit, not exuberant, more light, but really enjoyable. Harvest 13-27 September. Ageing in French oak for 14 months, 33% new.

If you seek a pure expression of Merlot blend with reasonable pricing in Pessac-Léognan, Château Lespault-Martillac is undoubtedly an excellent choice. The fruit is perfectly ripe, the acidity is surprisingly outstanding. The palate is smooth and delicate, and the finish lingers with a powerful graphite note. To produce such a fantastic wine in their first certified organic year, this grand terroir of Merlot is truly exceptional.

The 2022 Lespault-Martillac was picked 13 to 27 September. It has a well-defined bouquet, black cherries and blueberry fruit, a dab of opulence borrowed from the Right Bank, fine delineation with a subtle balsamic note. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannins on the entry. Good backbone, insistent grip, this represents a solid Lespault-Martillac with an almost burly finish. It will need 3-4 years of bottle age. 13% alcohol.

The 2022 Château Lespault-Martillac is mostly Merlot but includes 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. It has beautiful purity in its ripe red and blue fruits as well as classic Graves smoked earth, tobacco, graphite, and spice aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied on the palate, it's nicely balanced, has quality tannins, and a great finish. At the very least, it will be an outstanding wine and could be a real superstar of a 2022. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Lespault-Martillac is a bold, exuberant wine. Succulent dark cherry, plum, licorice, spice and mocha are all dialed up in this 60% Merlot, 40% Cabernet Sauvignon blend from a warm, early-ripening site in the commune of Martillac. This exuberant, fleshy red is an absolute delight. Tasted two times. Drinking window : 2030-2042

Tobacco leaves, cedar, black cherries, smoke, and spice are what you find in the nose. The palate enjoys loads of soft, sweet, ripe, dark pit fruits with polish, lift, round, soft fruits on the mid-palate, and in the fruity finish, with a touch of cocoa in the endnotes. The wine blends 65% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon and 5% Petit Verdot. Drink from 2025-2037.
