Langoa Barton - Saint-Julien 2022

The Barton dynasty, a fascinating story

What makes the history of the Barton family so fascinating is how each generation has left its mark and added its stone to this exceptional heritage. Settled in Bordeaux since 1722, the Barton family is one of the only families left in the Médoc that is still at the head of its properties since the 1855 classification.

Lilian Barton-Sartorius, the worthy successor of her father, Anthony Barton, now manages the three estates: Château Léoville Barton (2nd Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien), Langoa Barton (3ème Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Julien) and Mauvesin Barton (Moulis en Médoc). Her children, Mélanie and Damien, representing the 10th generation, are involved in the development of the family properties, thus keeping this remarkable legacy alive.

Château Langoa Barton, the first wine estate of the family

Saint Julien is where the roots and the heart of the Barton spirit can be felt.
The love story between the appellation and the Barton family began in 1821 when Hugh Barton purchased Château Langoa Barton. Since then, generation upon generation, the Barton family has been writting the chapters of this 3rd Grand Cru Classé in 1855.

The vines that make up the Château Langoa Barton terroir overlook the river and thus benefit from the natural protection of this thermal regulator. The mild temperatures due to this proximity imply early ripening, which is often a sign of good quality. The 20 hectares (49 acres) of Château Langoa Barton are planted on a magnificent outcrop of quaternary gravel lying on clay subsoil. This terroir gives pride of place to Cabernet-Sauvignon, along with Merlot and Cabernet franc.

2022 marks the first vintage of Château Langoa Barton from their new cellar, and it has already given us a wonderful gift in its debut. Swirling the glass reveals inviting aromas of coffee and hazelnuts, and upon tasting, the palate is flooded with the juicy, ripe berry fragrances. Château Langoa Barton showcases its deep understanding of the Saint-Julien terroir with vibrant acidity, rich mouthfeel, and finely honed tannins that sing as they touch the taste buds. The most surprising aspect is its dynamic acidity and the mysterious graphite notes on the finish. After 20 years of aging, it could very well rival top level estates.

The 2022 Langoa Barton has turned out superbly in bottle. Offering up aromas of cassis, blackberries, pencil shavings and violets, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and multidimensional, with velvety tannins, lively fruit and a long, penetrating finish. Seamless, integrated and intense, Langoa's more morcellated vineyards means that this estate has, if anything, gained even more from the Barton family's new vat room than its big brother Léoville Barton, as each parcel can now be fermented separately, optimizing its potential. This is the best young Langoa Barton I can remember tasting.

The last few years have seen Langoa, in classically understated Barton way, turning into a barnstormer, with the value that was once reserved for Léoville. It's great in 2022, with its slightly cooler terroir really coming into its own. Luscious black cherry, sandalwood, campfire, crayon, crushed rocks, this is stuff, almost ready to go but will clearly deliver for decades.

Possibly the finest vintage I've tasted from this château, the 2022 Château Langoa Barton has a gorgeous perfume of red and black fruits intermixed with smoky tobacco, fresh flowers, and cedar. I love its overall balance, and it's medium to full-bodied, has a pure, layered mouthfeel, and present yet sweet, polished tannins. I love it even today, yet it deserves 4-6 years of bottle age and will cruise in cold cellars over the following two decades or more.

2027-2047 95/100 ?

The 2022 Langoa Barton has a wonderful bouquet that has really blossomed since I tasted it from barrel. There is still a trait of Margaux thanks to its wilted violet element, but there may be more graphite and tobacco tones now the wine is in bottle. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-boned tannins and a precise, sensual finish. It's fresh and definitely a more elegant Langoa compared to recent vintages. Bon vin.

The 2022 Langoa-Barton is racy, open-knit and quite delicious. Bright red-toned fruit, blood orange, mint and spice give the 2022 palpable freshness to play off its gracious, mid-weight personality.

This is a suave rendering of the vintage, offering a vivid beam of boysenberry and blackberry puree that's gently succulent and generous in feel but stays racy and defined by an underlying iron note. Violet, ink and anise accents are infused throughout, lending brightness and range through the pure finish. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2027 through 2042. 5,500 cases made.

Supple and lively, this has energy and intensity from the start. Clean and precise, well worked, cool and fresh with tannins that do well to give the frame and structure without overwhelming the fruit. Really nice this year, good movement and liveliness, rich fruit but juicy and fun. Doesn't take itself too seriously and I really like it!! Harvest 8-23 September. Yield of 30hl/ha. Ageing in French oak, 60% new.

The 2022 vintage marks the first vintage of Château Langoa Barton in its new wine cellar. Upon swirling, the luscious aroma of coffee and hazelnut captivates the senses, while the palate is welcomed by a juicy burst of berry fruitiness. In comparison to many other wines En Primeur, Château Langoa Barton unabashedly displays all its qualities. The acidity is bright and the texture is delicate, with even the tannins polished to a finer degree. What surprises me most is the astonishing acidity and the mysterious graphite note in the finish, which fills me with great anticipation for its expression when bottled.

The 2022 Langoa-Barton was cropped at 30hL/ha from September 8-23 then matured in 60% new oak. The nose needs a few minutes to cohere, raspberry and dark cherry fruit, bunches of violet, almost Margaux-like in personality. The palate is where the action is at the moment with finely-chiseled tannins, a saline undertow, almost briny with a fresh and quite compelling, classically-styled finish. Fine length, this is a Langoa that just like the ABBA song, will go on and on and on.

Medium deep crimson. Blackcurrant, dark plum aromas with marzipan notes, fine grainy touch cedary tannins, very attractive inky density and mineral length. Plenty of vim and vigour = vinosity! (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc 60% new oak). 93-94+

A blend of 56.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Langoa Barton is ageing in 60% new oak. Deep garnet-purple in color, it prances out with exuberant notes of warm cassis, blueberry pie, and Morello cherries, leading to hints of chocolate mint, clove oil, and tilled soil. The medium to full-bodied palate is chock full of juicy black fruits, framed by plush tannins and plenty of freshness, finishing with a spicy kick.

The Grand Vin 2022 Château Langoa Barton checks in as 56.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc that was raised in 60% new barrels. Medium-bodied and vibrant, with a fresher, elegant, yet still textured profile, it has pure black and blue fruits, some lead pencil, tobacco, and earthy nuances, fine tannins, and a great finish. This 2022 is all about finesse and elegance. Tasted twice with consistent notes.

The 2022 Langoa Barton is vibrant and focused, as the best wines are in this vintage. Crushed raspberry, blood orange, mint, spice and rose petal are all beautifully delineated. There’s a purity to the 2022 that is impossible to miss. I admire its precision and lovely minerality. Langoa could turn out to be one of the Sleepers of 2022, especially among the more affordable wines of the Left Bank. Drinking window : 2028-2042

Cassis, tobacco, flowers, blackberries, and red currants show easily on the nose, and palate. There is a wealth of fresh, dark red fruits, creamy tannins, and blackberries on the mid-palate, and in the finish. This clearly shows a new face for Langoa Barton with more fruit, and softer tannins, yet the wine holds on to its classic style as well. The wine blends 56.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot and 2.5% Cabernet Franc. 14.2% ABV. Drink from 2027-2050.

The first vintage produced in the estate's new winery, which more than doubled the number of vats, permitting sub-plot by sub-plot vinification, the brilliant 2022 Langoa Barton offers up aromas of dark berries, cassis, violets and cigar wrapper, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy palate endowed with terrific depth and tension. Polished and penetrating, it should match or even surpass the 2019 and 2016 vintages, and it is sure to be one of the more intelligent purchases of the en primeur campaign. 93 - 95+
