Clos du Marquis - Saint-Julien 2022

Clos du Marquis, the greatness of Saint-Julien's terroirs

Clos du Marquis, created in 1902, finds its origin in the Petit Clos adjacent to the Château de Léoville, the residence of the Marquis de Las Cases. Clos du Marquis is a historic vineyard of the Delon estates, originally separate from the vineyard of Léoville Las Cases.

Today, the vineyard producing Clos du Marquis is mainly located on the great terroirs of the Saint-Julien appellation, surrounded by prestigious classified growths such as Léoville Poyferré or Léoville Barton. The heart of the Clos du Marquis terroir is situated 500 meters west of the Enclos of Léoville Las Cases. It consists of Quaternary gravel, older and finer than those of the Enclos. On these 45 hectares of vineyard, the ripening phase is later than in the Enclos, which benefits from the warming brought by the proximity of the Gironde.

This typical Saint-Julien terroir produces a great Clos du Marquis, with beautiful concentration and distinction worthy of the greatest wines of the appellation. It demonstrates a gentle power combining sapidity and richness, offering a saline touch on the finish.

The 2022 vintage

The Clos du Marquis benefits of a very complex terroir. The 2022 vintage is exceptional. A cold and mild winter. A dry spring. A scorching summer that quickly led to the first water stresses, which generally indicate a remarkable vintage and the rainfall from the end of May to the end of June, which was more abundant in Saint-Julien than in the other appellations. These conditions led the grapes to a magnificent potential maturity in skin tannins, in small and concentrated berries. The good behaviour of our vines during this hot and relatively dry vintage is also closely linked to the respect of the sap flow, to which we pay particular attention when pruning to improve the strength and resilience of the vines. The pruning skills of our winegrowers have been recognised for many years.

Like many tannin-rich Saint-Julien wines, Clos du Marquis 2022 showcases a powerful structure and impressive depth. What sets it apart, however, is its ethereal violet fragrance and finely polished tannins, allowing it to stand out in a hot vintage. It sings boldly in the wind while maintaining its hallmark elegance. Upon opening, the fruit aromas are initially reserved, but a gentle swirl reveals a symphony of dried plum, bayberry, and salted plum, intertwined with the refined spiciness of licorice, cinnamon, and rosemary. Compared to previous vintages, Clos du Marquis 2022 exhibits greater depth and energy, suggesting that after a decade of aging, it might stand shoulder-to-shoulder with its sibling, Léoville-Las Cases.

The 2022 Clos du Marquis is lovely, unwinding in the glass with notes of inky berries and cherries mingled with attractive floral nuances of rose petals and violets. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and suave, it's layered and concentrated, with a dense and lively core of fruit, beautiful purity and a long, penetrating finish.

As of this vintage, the vines that were in le Petit Marquis have been included back into Clos du Marquis (and this is the last vintage before it heads over into its own separate winery). It's good quality, chalky texture to the tannins, controlled power, bitter black chocolate, cocoa bean 53% new oak for ageing.

The 2022 Clos Du Marquis is rich, concentrated, and serious, with cassis, graphite, spring flowers, and chalky minerality developing with time in the glass. Full-bodied and incredibly pure on the palate, it has bright acidity, building tannins, and a great finish. This structured yet elegant Saint-Julien should evolve well for at least 2-3 decades if well stored.

The 2022 Clos du Marquis has held on to its generous, perfumed, floral bouquet that shades the preceding Le Petit Lion. This has plenty of black cherry, blackcurrant, cedar and pencil box aromas. It's opulent compared to its peers yet beautifully defined. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins. It is seductive, with a satin-like texture and a poised, prolonged finish. This has stepped up a level during barrel maturation. It's wonderful.

A scented, fresh and polished Clos du Marquis that shows tension. Medium- to full-bodied, this has blueberries and red berries with attractive minerality. A hint of pencil shavings as well. The tannins are fresh and really chalky and dissolved. 45.5% merlot, 44.5% cabernet sauvignon and 10% cabernet franc. Superb balance makes it pure, almost a bit ethereal and already inviting, but this should be approached after 2028.

The 2022 Clos du Marquis is gorgeous. Resonant and quite expressive, it possesses notable textural depth and plenty of presence but never feels heavy. Inky dark-toned fruit, spice, new leather and licorice all flow across the palate. The 2022 will be an absolute delight to drink over the next 10-15 years.

This sports a strapping feel, with blackberry and boysenberry compote notes that show solid, brambly energy, backed by licorice snap and roasted apple wood, while a streak of warm earth runs underneath. Shows the warmth of the vintage, but with good latent energy. Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc. Best from 2026 through 2040.

Dark bramble fruit on the nose with touches of graphite, violets, pencil shaving, liquorice, ink, dark chocolate and mocha. Forward and open, rich and opulent, such intensity of dark fruits giving power, concentration and forward motion but so sleek and sensuous. This is confident but serious in that it expands vertically growing in complexity and gaining more density and velvety texture. Acidity is there but not so pronounced putting the emphasis more on the construction. Feels extremely well made with precision and long length. 3.70pH. 84IPT. A yield of 33hl/ha.

Like many tannin-rich Saint-Julien wines, Clos du Marquis 2022 also boasts a powerful structure and depth. Its fruitiness is somewhat subtle, a delightful bouquet of plum, bayberry, and plum sugar fills the air, alongside the enchanting fragrance of licorice, cinnamon, and rosemary. Compared to previous vintages of Clos du Marquis, the 2022 vintage boasts a more profound body and a greater sense of energy, exuding a hint of regal power that only a true lion can possess.

Deep crimson. Intense violet, cassis, dark chocolate aromas with cedar notes. Generously concentrated and silky textured wine with pure cassis blackberry inky flavours and beautifully ripe tannins, . A touch of savoury complexity and fresh linear acidity. This should evolve very well. 45.5% Merlot, 44.5% Cabernet Sauvignon 10% Cabernet Franc 53% new oak 7% press wine 14.25% alc

A blend of 45.5% Merlot, 44.5% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 10% Cabernet Franc, the 2022 Clos du Marquis has a deep garnet-purple color. It charges out of the gate with notes of crème de cassis, plum preserves, and juicy blueberries, followed by wafts of dried roses, fertile loam, and unsmoked cigars. The medium-bodied palate has lovely freshness and fine-grained tannins framing the exuberant black fruits, finishing with a refreshing lift.

I loved the 2022 Clos Du Marquis, which is a brilliant effort, if not the finest vintage of this cuvée I've tasted. Cassis, graphite, and floral notes all define the bouquet, and it's full-bodied, with ultra-fine tannins and flawless balance. It shows the ripe, concentrated, powerful style of the vintage yet is incredibly pure and seamless, with everything in the right places. It's going to round into form with just a few years of bottle age but have decades of prime drinking.

"We've never seen such refined Cabernet Sauvignon at this property," says Jean-Hubert Delon of the 2022 Clos du Marquis, and the resulting wine is certainly unusually suave and expressive, bursting with aromas of cassis, plums, orange zest, violets and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with excellent concentration, supple tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish, it will likely offer a rather broad drinking window. 93 - 95+

Cocoa bean, smoked coffee bean, intense tannins, powerful with depth and concentration, dense tannins, cassis and baked plum fruits, a ton of dark pepper spice, and baked earth, expands outwards through the palate, plenty of St Julien character. 34 hl/ha, 53% new barrels, 3.7ph. As of this vintage, the vines that were in le Petit Marquis have been included back into Clos du Marquis.
