Saint-Pierre - Saint-Julien 2022

Saint-Pierre, an ambassador of the Grands Crus Classés of Saint-Julien

In the world of wine, family is a much-flaunted value; many talk about it, yet few experience it quite like the Triauds. The story starts at the cusp of the Second World War, when Henri Martin, whose grandfather was a winemaker at Gruaud-Larose, acquired plots of vines from a number of classified growths in Saint-Julien, patiently building "his own" vineyard, Château Gloria. Work of a lifetime, Henri Martin devoted thirty years' hard work to finding its lustre. It has now become one of the Medoc's most famous "non-classified growths". Then, in the mid 70s, the family business was boosted by the arrival of his son-in-law, Jean-Louis Triaud. This arrival marked the beginning of a 40-year carreer for this charismatic man with a wonderful sense of humor. Henri Martin and Jean-Louis Triaud worked hard, side by side, to develop both family estates. Saint-Pierre, the linear, elegant, archetypal Medoc features among "the greatest value wines in the whole of Bordeaux".

Today, Jean Triaud, along with his wife, Caroline, and his brother-in-law, Orphée Amougou, is the third generation at the helm of the family estates. And the 4th is already on board. Thus, this family knows how to work collaboratively to preserve and to pass on this magnificent family legacy. In 2021, to achieve that goal, they have launched the conversion of the vineyard to Organic Farming.

The 2022 vintage

Jean Triaud tells you about the vintage: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KMVuKolAb80&list=PLez2o_cjTYvjsySqCHnCZInBCJKEJAAQC&index=85

"The vintage of 2022, we will remembered! Managing drought was a priority for us (no leaf removal, soil work, application of herbal teas). The health condition is impeccable, the berries have reached perfect ripeness. The wines have a very deep purple color, highly aromatic, and a complete and fleshy mouthfeel. Undoubtedly a wine of immediate pleasure, combining great aging potential."

The aroma of Château Saint-Pierre 2022 is as fresh as a mountain stream, while its body is as delicate as frothy milk foam. It’s exactly what I was hoping for. Without the heavy roasted notes, Château Saint-Pierre’s form and contour become more defined. After swirling the glass, I find notes of Sichuan pepper and cloves, mingling with the fragrance of sour plums and cherries. Moreover, I notice that Château Saint-Pierre’s tannins are much softer than before, even in a concentrated vintage like 2022, it manages to maintain a softness throughout, giving me good anticipation for its future.

Aromas of cassis, blackberries, pencil shavings and licorice introduce the 2022 Saint-Pierre, a medium to full-bodied, velvety and suave wine that's rich but integrated, concluding with a clean, gently tannic finish. A touch less flamboyant than this estate could be in the past, it's a more classical expression of this estate.

High Cabernet Sauvignon in a vintage where this grape ripened fully, and it really comes across in the intense but savoury character of the blue and black fruit. Chalky edge to the tannins, intense and vivid sage and clove spices, crushed rocks, ink and crayon.

Blackcurrants, graphite, crushed stone, and liquid violet notes all emerge from the 2022 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien), another deeply colored, powerful, full-bodied Saint-Julien. Coming from 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, and the rest Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot, it has a layered, elegant mouthfeel, beautiful tannins, and a great finish. It's going to stand with the truly greats from not only this terroir but the entire Médoc.

2027-2047 96/100

The 2022 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien), which has more Cabernet Sauvignon in the blend, is more opulent and primal on the nose than the Gloria. Blueberry filters through black fruit as hints of iodine and violet emerge over time. The medium-bodied palate offers sapid black fruit, fine-boned tannins and wonderful structure and purity. What I appreciate about this Saint-Pierre is that it is quintessentially Saint-Julien. Armed with a reassuringly long finish, this has immense potential.

A posh, sophisticated St.-Julien that manages to maintain freshness, nuanced complexity and class in a hot year. In fact, this is one of the best Saint-Pierres. Layered and poised, with lots of minerals, dark berries and pencil shavings, followed by fresh, firm and polished tannins. The finish goes on for almost a minute. Really exciting, even for the 2022, when a lot of the wines from the left bank did really well. Drink from 2029.

The 2022 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is superb, just as it was _en primeur_. Inky dark fruit, new leather, lavender, licorice, spice and graphite infuse the 2022 with striking complexity and dimension. As always, Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is a big, heady wine. There's certainly a lot of wine here. The 2022 is so vivid.

Ripe and vivid, with plum, cassis and boysenberry notes spilling out. There's just enough singed apple wood and cast iron to keep this focused. Violet and anise accents chime in the background. A decidedly not-shy St.-Julien that captures this vintage profile nicely. Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. Best from 2027 through 2040. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 6,500 cases made.

Smells dark and deep; dark chocolate, savoury liquorice spice and ripe fruit. Joyously fruity and juicy on the palate with a salty tang that really carries the freshness and sense of minerality. I love the frame and the flavour with intensely grippy tannins but it works, excellently presented with flow and movement, direction and finesse. Cool and classic with great mineral markers of salt, liquorice and crushed stones. Feels sophisticated and really compelling, a great surprise and top buy. 2% Petit Verdot completes the blend. Harvest 12-26 September. Yield of 34hl/ha.

The 2022 Saint-Pierre was picked 12-26 September at around 35hL/ha and matured in 48% new oak. It has an intense bouquet with black cherries, iodine and touches of blood orange. Delineated and focused. The palate is where the action is with gorgeous svelte tannins, perfectly judged acidity, harmonious, plush but not overbearing. Velvety toward the finish, yet there is real tenderness here. It actually is reminiscent of Las-Cases at the moment.

Deep crimson. Elderberry, dark plum, cassis aromas with hints of chocolate. Well concentrated and expressive with plentiful elderberry, blackcurrant fruits and brambly/ chocolaty firm tannins. Builds chewy firm at the finish. (Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc. About 50% new oak)

The cellar of Saint-Pierre is right next to the Pomerol church, and is turning up the intensity in 2022, with fragrant sandalwood, concentrated damson and cassis fruitsn and liqourice. A ton of character, bitter on the finish, veers towards too much, needs more time in ageing. Stephane Derenoncourt consultant. 50% new oak (225l and 500L) 45% one year old barrels and 5% amphora.

The 2022 Saint-Pierre is deep garnet-purple in color. After a swirl or two, the nose erupts with gorgeous notions of blackcurrant jelly, raspberry preserves, and baked plums, leading to suggestions of iris, fragrant earth, and black olives. The medium to full-bodied palate has a firm, grainy texture and oodles of freshness supporting the taut, muscular black fruits, finishing long with bags of grace and perfume. This is beautiful.

Finale persistante.

A real "wow" wine in the making, the 2022 Château Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) checks in as 80% Cabernet Sauvignon, 12% Merlot, 6% Cabernet Franc, and the rest Petit Verdot. This darker, powerful wine offers up loads of pure cassis and black cherry-like fruits as well as ample chocolate, graphite, and lead pencil nuances. Full-bodied, concentrated, and structured, it nevertheless stays pure, impeccably balanced, and shows a real sense of elegance. The alcohol here is 13.9% and the élevage is in 48% new French oak. Tasted twice with consistent notes. 95-97+

The 2022 Saint-Pierre (Saint-Julien) is superb. Dark, sumptuous and beautifully layered, Saint-Pierre is a wine of mystery. Inky dark fruit, lavender, licorice, plum, chocolate and gravel all build as the 2022 shows off its layered, somber personality. As always, Saint-Pierre packs a tremendous punch. It's all there in the 2022. Drinking window : 2027-2047

Concentrated, lush, deep, ripe, full, and intense, the fruits are elegant, creamy, ripe, and polished. There is a purity to the fruits, and a sensuality to the texture that really works here this year. The wine blends 75% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Merlot, and 10% Petit Verdot. 13.9% ABV. Drink from 2025-2045.

A particular success for this estate, the 2022 Saint-Pierre offers up aromas of cassis, licorice and violets, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's lively and sapid, with powdery structuring tannins and a penetrating finish. Its tannic weight tempers the wine's sweetness of fruit to deliver a classy, nicely balanced result. 93 - 94+
