Haut Bergey rouge - Pessac-Léognan 2016

The dedication of the Garcin family

In 1991, attracted by the potential of its land and the charm of its property, the Garcin family bought the Château Haut-Bergey. Under the management of Sylviane Garcin-Cathiard, the property underwent a vast rehabilitation, both in the vineyards and cellars. Since 2014, Paul Garcin has managed the domain, pursuing a path of organic and bio-dynamic winemaking production.

A unique vision in Pessac Leognan

Château Haut-Bergey defends its identity and values through its environmental practices. It is in fact the only estate in the Pessac Leognan appellation to be certified biodynamics, therefore the team invests a great deal of time and effort each year in their terroir. They proudly produce a vibrant wine that has the highest energy.

The 2016 Haut-Bergey has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry, briar and sous-bois aromas, just a hint of mushroom developing with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with a slightly jarring peppery entry, rather hard tannins and a somewhat austere finish. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting. 85?

Tasted blind. Lots of fruit and freshness. Clean and driven. Good energy. A bit inky. Drink 2023-2030

A silky and delicious wine now with very fine tannins, medium body and berry, wet-earth, lavender and currant character. Drink now or hold.

The red is also outstanding. Notes of blackcurrants, smoked earth, wet stone, and chocolate all emerge from the 2016 Château Haut-Bergey. Medium-bodied, beautifully textured, and layered on the palate, it has ripe tannins and the hallmark purity of fruit that makes 2016 so special. Drink it over the coming 10-15 years.

This has a fleshy plum and cassis-laden core, laced with singed tobacco leaf and dark earth notes and backed by a tug of cedar detail on the finish. A touch chewy in the end; for fans of the gutsy style. Best from 2022 through 2030. 5,667 cases made.  –JM

The 2016 Haut-Bergey is powerful and a bit rough around the edges, but pleasantly rustic in its own way. Leather, tobacco, cedar and game power through in this deep, flavorful Pessac-Léognan.

Nez délicatement fruité et épicé, bouche ronde et charnue en attaque, bien fruitée, structurée, avec des tannins que l’élevage harmonisera et une bonne allonge.

The 2016 Haut Bergey has a superior bouquet compared to the previous two vintages that left this writer a bit perplexed. There is greater purity and harmony here: marine-tinged black fruit with just a hint of cassis developing with time. The palate is medium-bodied with firm tannin on the entry, good depth with a slightly "fishy" note in the background. It loses its ways a little towards the finish where I am seeking more structure and detail. Let's see how this performs once in bottle.

Smoky, earthy, dark, red fruits, polished, forward and in a crowd pleasing, upfront, medium bodied style. There is nice plush textures, but not a lot of complexity.

The 2016 Haut-Bergey offers notable thrust and energy in its dark fruit, grilled herb, tobacco and woodsmoke flavors. Powerful and driven in style, if a bit linear, the 2016 has good persistence and plenty of personality.

Very dry and very dull. There is no fruit whatsoever to redeem this wine. 14?

Blackish crimson. Something burnt and overripe about this nose. Then leathery and sinewy. Not a comfortable whole. Very inky tannins on the finish.

Offers a grippy, slightly extracted feel, with a layer of plum skin around the core of steeped blackberry and black currant fruit. Delivers ample tarry grip through the finish.—J.M.

A firm and chewy red with blackberry, currant and light walnut character. Full body and a structured finish.

This estate, owned by Paul Garcin, has produced a successful red in 2016 with a lovely sense of restrained power and a fresh delivery with well-paced, well-rounded tannins. It is not as juicy as some in this vintage, but it has presence and good persistency, and is expertly handled. This has all five of the main Bordeaux varieties: Merlot, both Cabs, Malbec and Petit Verdot from clay and gravel soils, aged in 33% new oak over 16 months.
