Gruaud Larose (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Julien 2023

Gruaud Larose, the revival of a "Super Second"

Since its foundation in 1725, four families have succeeded one another at the head of Gruaud Larose: the Gruaud & Larose families, the Balguerie and Sarget families, the Cordier family, and the Merlaut family. The sprawling 82-hectare vineyard, planted in 1784, envelops the château. This remarkably uniform terroir has remained unchanged since 1855 when the estate earned its prestigious 2nd Grand Cru Classé status.

At Gruaud Larose, the vine thrives in harmony with its natural surroundings, guided by the hands of dedicated individuals. Each vine thrives within a vibrant, equitable, and sustainable ecosystem. Consequently, the teams have embraced a comprehensive approach to uphold the essence of this classified growth. This approach encompasses organic farming (with 2022 marking the inaugural certified vintage), an expansive agroforestry initiative, eco-pasturing, technological innovations, and shifts in viticultural practices to enhance the well-being of the workforce.

A pivotal moment occurred in 2018 when Virginie Sallette assumed the role of Technical Director. In addition to scrutinizing every facet of the production process to reach greater precision, she and her teams have reaped the benefits of a comprehensive vineyard replanting program initiated several years ago. The remarkable qualitative progression of the wines attests to this transformative phase. With its pure and timeless style, Gruaud Larose, in our view, stands as a property poised among the most promising. The philosophy and wines of this estate evoke the words of Coco Chanel, 'Fashion fades, but style is eternal.'

The 2023 Gruaud Larose, matured in 95% new oak for 18 months, has an attractive bouquet marked by pure black fruit laced with pressed iris and peony, a touch of clove in the background. Fine delineation, and the oak is neatly integrated. The palate is medium-bodied with smooth tannins, with hints of tea leaves. Not a huge amount of grip, but this is very harmonious. Lightly spiced with cedar and tobacco notes toward the “cool” red berry finish, this is a typical contemporary Gruaud Larose that will need just four to five years before it is ready to drink.

A muscular Gruaud. Chewy and structured, with black currant, flint, thyme and spice aromas that follow through to a medium to full body and plenty of tannins that are not overpowering. Needs time to soften. Best after 2028.

A complete knockout of a wine in 2023. Deep, vibrant purple in colour. Lots of milk chocolate, some exotic spices and black fruit touches on the nose, along with floral scents of roses and violets - smells gorgeous. Supple and filling, an immediate weight and texture on the palate, thick silk and ripe fruit, massy but then almost straight away quite clean and crisp. Forward and focussed, tannins RE supportive but so well integrated into the wine - almost a seamless expression - with plenty of underlying power. It’s delicious. Very drinkable, finessed and restrained, nothing overdone, no harshness. Everything feels in its place. Juicy and succulent cherry, blackcurrant and blueberry with high mouthwatering acidity. A great wine, I love it because it’s layered and lifted, you can feel the sculpting with muscles on show and it feels very ‘put together’. There’s lots of strict Cabernet, but this has a touch of plushness which you can't help but smile at. A top buy in 2023. 40% grand production, taken from 60% of the estate. 15% press wine.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Gruaud Larose leaps with vibrant notes of cassis, fresh blackberries, and mulberries giving way to nuances of tapenade, iris, pencil shavings, and iron ore. The palate is light-bodied and airy, with beautiful poise and soft silky tannins, delivering a lively burst of mineral and red berry notes on the finish. This is nicely done! The blend is 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc, with pH 3.80.

Tobacco leaf, cedar, red, with black currants, wet earth, smoke, and blackberries crowd into the perfume. On the palate, the wine is bright, fresh, juicy, classic, firm, crisp, and chewy, with layers of spicy, black, and red berries that linger. There is lift, and precision in this modern version of a classic Bordeaux. Give it some time in the bottle to fill out, and it is going to be even better! 2023 is the second, fully-organic vintage for the vineyard. The wine is a blend of 83% Cabernet Sauvignon, 14.5% Merlot, and 2.5% Cabernet Franc.12.62% ABV, 3.4 pH. Picking took place September 11 - September 25. Drink from 2029-2060. 93-95 Pts.

Vibrant colour that speaks of a great En Primeur wine, with the bright acidities that seem typical in these appellations of 2023. More subdued than some sibling St Juliens, this has a serious feel, with the Cabernets very much on the savoury, stately side, sinewy and with touches of raspberry leaf and peony, fragrant and floral. Plenty of ageing capacity ahead, but don't feel that you will have to wait too long to begin drinking. Old school and delicous. The Cabernet levels are above 80% as has been true for the last few years, a result of the vines coming in to the right age after extensive replanting.

The 2023 Gruaud Larose is a powerhouse. Rich and ample, with striking depth, the 2023 offers notable resonance from start to finish. Black cherry, blackberry, licorice and spice fill out the layers nicely. The 2023 is a big, potent Gruaud Larose that will need a number of years to be at its best. This is a terrific example of the vintage at its finest.

The 2023 Gruaud Larose was picked from September 11 to October 3 at 42hL/ha and matured in 95% new oak with 15% vin de presse. There was no saignée. There is a large difference between the Sarget and the Grand Vin this year: There’s much more complexity and purity here. Layers of blackberry, cedar and floral scents surface in the glass, all very composed with beautifully integrated oak (perhaps better than previous vintages). The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins—quite crisp and commendably saline, which really comes through toward the finish. This is a classic Gruaud Larose that confirms the ongoing improvement at this estate.

Deep dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, delicate edge brightening. Cassis, ripe plum and heart cherry, some nougat, delicate herbal savouriness, with candied orange zest in the background. Juicy, elegant, fine fruit sweetness, delicate acidity, already harmonious and accessible, heart cherry in the aftertaste, a charming food companion with development and certain ageing potential.
