Les Griffons de Pichon Baron - Pauillac 2023

Les griffons de Pichon Baron:

In 1987, Axa Millésimes bought Château Pichon Baron.
Christian Seely has been at the helm of the estate for over 20 years. He has made the pursuit of excellence his guiding principle. His latest achievement: the construction of a modern technical facility and a magnificent tasting area, inaugurated in 2023.

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron
is one of the second wines of the property. Created since the 2012 vintage, it has a pure and direct character. The grapes which make up this wine's blend come primarily from gravelly plots of land near to the Gironde estuary. Les Griffons offers a vigorous and fresh tasting experience, full-bodied and clean, overflowing with energy. It can be laid down in the cellar for over 20 years or enjoyed right away.

The 2023 Vintage: a contemporary classic

Climatic conditions:

The weather conditions of 2023 were very varied. The year generally was marked by sunny weather and high temperatures, enabling optimum ripeness of the grapes, particularly the Cabernet-Sauvignons in Pauillac are spectacular. However, a cool cloudy start to August, combined with hot sunny weather both before and afterwards, resulted in grapes of excellent maturity but also remarkable freshness.

At Château Pichon Baron, fine conditions in September enabled us to harvest each parcel at the optimum moment, giving excellent fresh, balanced and profound wines at every level, but above all a Grand Vin of exceptional harmony, with generous solar ripeness and complexity combined with freshness and elegant fine tannins of great length.

Tasting notes:

The 2023 vintage presents rich, complex wines of great depth, with good acidity and low alcohol. The result is a vintage that combines the generosity of a sunny year with the fresh, classic balance of the great Bordeaux vintages of the past.

The 2023 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron just needs a little more delineation to come through, touches of baking powder and cinnamon infusing the black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a bright entry, quite rounded in texture, fine acidity with a touch of brown spice toward the finish. Give this two or three years in bottle.

A structured red with berry, chocolate and crushed-stone character. Medium- to full-bodied, it has chewy tannins and a savory finish yet remains soft and textural. Needs a couple of years in the bottle.

Le meilleur des autres vins de la propriété, typé pauillac, avec un nez finement fumé, des notes de tabac, un bon corps et une finale de bonne longueur.

The slightly more Cabernet Sauvignon-dominant 2023 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is more serious, with a focused, straight, structured style. Cassis black raspberries, spice, and graphite all define the aromatics, and it's medium-bodied and focused, with plenty of structure and outstanding length. I think it will be longer-lived than the Tourelles, but both of these so-called second wines are beautiful.

Les Griffons de Pichon Baron (Pauillac; 57% Cabernet Sauvignon; 41% Merlot; 2% Petit Verdot; pH 3.8; 7% press wine; a final yield of 37 hl/ha; 13.2% alcohol; tasted at Pichon Baron with Christian Seely). Brighter and more vertical both aromatically and in the mouth than Les Tourelles. Redcurrant, blackcurrant, a little damson. This has a more traditional and quite chiselled structure, much more so than Les Tourelles (which is horizonal where this is more vertical). Pauillac depth and with more of a sense of gravitas and profundity. Intensely sapid. The tannins are nicely interwoven with the acidity producing an integral sense of freshness that is sapid, juicy and salivating.

On the floral side, with accents of espresso, mint, chocolate, cassis, and blackberries for the core of the perfume. On the medium-bodied palate, the wine is elegant, fresh, and chewy, The red berries are soft, refined, bright, crisp, and chewy. This is a perfect example of a modern, styled classic Pauillac, focused on its vibrancy, length, and freshness. The wine was created from a blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 41% Merlot, and 2% Petit Verdot. This is the highest percentage of Cabernet ever used in the blend.13.2% ABV, 3.8 pH. Drink from 2028-2042. 92-94 Pts.

The 2023 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is superb. Silky, elegant and wonderfully refined, the Griffons is all class, all the way. I admire its mid-weight structure and polished feel. All the elements are so nicely balanced. Plum, blood orange, cinnamon and rose petal linger effortlessly.

The 2023 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron represents 21% of the production in this vintage. Matured in 50% new oak, it has a seductive, creamy nose, displaying blackberries and cassis fruit with touches of crushed violet and orange blossom. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins on the entry, a very pretty Les Griffons with white pepper and a dab of lemon rind that lends tension on the finish. This is not a powerful Pauillac, but it is flush with charm.

Based around 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2023 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron reflects the style of the grand vin, offering up aromas of cassis, sweet red berries, cigar wrapper and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate with a deep core of fruit, sweet powdery tannins and a long, penetrating finish.
