Grand Puy Ducasse - Pauillac 2023

Grand-Puy Ducasse, the Renaissance of a Grand Cru Classé

The origins of this Grand Cru Classé in 1855 date back to 1675. In 2004, Crédit Agricole acquired the Château.
With its 60 parcels spread throughout the Pauillac appellation, Grand Puy Ducasse presents a singular diversity of terroirs.
The constant progression of the quality of this wine has been noticed for more than 10 years. In 2021, the Renaissance project was launched, which includes the construction of a new vat room, new cellars and a new tourist experience on the docks of Pauillac, on its original land. This renaissance is symbolized by a new label starting from the 2020 vintage.

The 2023 Vintage: Historical, Innovative and Generous - the first vintage of a new era!

The 2023 vintage at Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is synonymous with renewal and precision. Climatic conditions turned out to be quite balanced, between a mild, rainy winter and a dry, hot summer! The rains at the beginning of September enabled the Merlot to reach maturity, and we waited serenely for the Cabernet Sauvignon to do so. Although the harvest started relatively early compared with previous vintages, it was spread out slowly until October.

2023 is historic for the estate, as it is the first vintage to be vinified in the château's new gravity-fed vat room. A new, completely redesigned facility for precise plot-by-plot selection with even greater respect for the raw material, i.e. the grapes.

The 2023 Grand-Puy-Ducasse has a plusher bouquet compared to its Pauillac peers, though it manages to retain satisfying delineation, raspberry and blackcurrant mixed with tobacco and forest floor. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, well-judged acidity, moderate length with a minty finish. Drink over the next 15 to 20 years.

Currants, berries and spices with a fresh, elegant, herbal edge. Fine-grained on the palate, with creamy tannins and a structured, integrated finish. Vertical but pretty polished. 52% cabernet sauvignon, 44% merlot and 4% petit verdot. Drink from 2027.

Le nouveau cuvier a permis d’élaborer un vin aux tannins immédiatement plus harmonieux, dominé par le goût classique des beaux cabernets du millésime. Superbe rapport qualité-prix.

The 2023 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse is concentrated and inward, with a dense bouquet of smoky black fruit, iron, leafy tobacco, and lead pencil. This carries to a medium to full-bodied, concentrated Pauillac that has beautiful overall balance, ripe yet certainly building tannins, ample background oak, and a great finish. I love its overall balance, as well as its purity, but this brilliant Pauillac is going to be for those with a touch of patience. I suspect a solid 7-8 years should put it in the early stages of its drinking window, and it should have at least three decades of overall longevity.

The 2023 Grand-Puy Ducasse has a deep garnet-purple color. The nose opens with cedar and pencil lead notes, before giving way to a core of fresh blackberries, Bing cherries, and raspberries, plus an undercurrent of dried Provence herbs. The medium-bodied palate delivers a good amount of savory-laced black berry flavors, with lightly chewy tannins and well-knit freshness, finishing on a woody note.

Grand-Puy Ducasse (Pauillac; 52% Cabernet Sauvignon; 44% Merlot; 4% Petit Verdot; a final yield of 50 hl/ha; 13.5% alcohol; tasted at the UGC press tasting at the Cité du Vin). We’re already off to a good start when the second wine, Prélude, is rather better than most recent vintages of the grand vin. And the good news continues with the grand vin itself in 2023. Lush, plump, plush, opulent and yet elegant and classically refined on the nose, with dark berry and stone fruit, the damson and mulberry perhaps just stealing the show. Quite sweet fruited, enticingly so. The palate is soft and nicely filled, here with cherries, damsons, brambles and mulberries. Succulent through the mid-palate but chewy and substantial on the finish which is lifted, elegant and long. The best I’ve ever tasted from here and a new benchmark I am sure for the property.

Espresso, mint, incense, flowers, currants, and licorice form the core the wine. On the palate, the fruits are fresh, chewy, and energetic, with a brightness to the finish, that's made even more refreshing with its sprig of mint. This should age for at least 2 decades with ease. Drink from 2029-2050. 92-94 Pts.

Inky plum colour, loaded up with Left Bank cassis and inky black fruits, crayon and liqourice root, balanced and sappy, but not giving too much away at the same time. A sign that this is becoming an estate to watch in Pauiillac, got to be one of the values of the vintage. Benjamin Cassoulet is the technical director from 2021.

The 2023 Grand-Puy Ducasse is fabulous. In fact, the 2023 is one of the best recent vintages I have tasted here. A wine of grandeur and sweeping intensity, this Grand-Puy Ducasse is seriously impressive. Silky tannins enshroud a huge core of dark fruit. Hints of graphite, dried flowers, mint and spice appear later, adding shades of complexity. It's a magnificent effort by the team led by Technical Director Anne Le Naour. Tasted two times.

The 2023 Grand Puy Ducasse has one of the most impressive bouquets encountered from this estate in a number of years: blackberry, cedar and light floral notes, with a hint of pencil shavings in the background. This is Pauillac through and through, with newfound conviction. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit, and a touch of dark chocolate and black pepper. There’s much more body and grip compared to previous vintages. Excellent. This may surpass their 2022.

Dark ruby, opaque core, purple reflections, brightening on the edge. Delicately floral, blackberries, black cherries, subtle herbal savouriness. Medium body, red cherries, subtle tannins, good freshness, mineral finish, offers uncomplicated drinking plea- sure.
