The second wine of this great estate, the 2019 Les Griffons De Pichon Baron is a more Merlot-dominated release and is 59% Merlot and 41% Cabernet Sauvignon that saw 40% new oak. It has a gorgeous nose of ripe blackcurrant and darker cherry fruits as well as tobacco, smoked herbs, violets, and freshly sharpened pencils. Vibrant, pure, and complex aromatically, it's medium to full-bodied on the palate, has the vintage's pure, elegant character, terrific depth on the mid-palate, and outstanding length. It's a wonderful, already approachable Pauillac that will deliver the goods over the coming 20+ years.

It offers an exotic mélange of dark fruit, licorice, smoke and tobacco, with strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections that lend savory aromatic presence. The long, persistent finish is exceptionally beautiful.

The 2019 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron has a well-defined bouquet of blackberry and cedar scents and (still) those iris petals. There is a light ash-like scent in the background. The saline palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and less licorice than out of barrel, leading to a fresh, detailed finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron is a blend of 41% Cabernet Sauvignon and 59% Merlot, harvested from the 18th of September to the 11th of October. It is being aged in French oak barrels, 60% new, for 18 months. The production of this wine represents 23% of the harvest. Very deep purple-black colored, is comes bounding out of the glass with exuberant black cherries, warm cassis and preserved plums scents, plus hints of lilacs, underbrush, dried Provence herbs and pencil shavings. The medium to full-bodied palate is charged with energetic black and blue fruits, framed by finely grained tannins and seamless freshness, finishing long and perfumed. Impressive!

The 2019 Les Griffons de Pichon Baron represents 23% of the production this year, aged in 60% new oak and the rest in one-year old oak for an intended 18 months. The opulence of the growing season comes through strongly on the nose with lavish black cherries, pressed iris petals and cedar aromas that are accentuated with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent ripe tannins, the black fruit laced with liquorice and a very discrete Earl Grey tincture. Well balanced with plenty of girth and grip on the finish, it is a little flashier than the Grand Vin and will give a lot of drinking pleasure over 20 years.

Espresso, roses, cocoa, black plums and currants pop up in the nose. On the palate, the wine is rich, round, lush and silky. Full-bodied, vibrant, juicy and lifted, the endnote repeats all those black currants with a dab of dark chocolate again and again. The wine is a blend of 59% Merlot with 41% Cabernet Sauvignon reaching 14.1% alcohol. 92-94 Pts

Always the wine from the Griffons-Les Tourelles pairing that is closer to Pichon Baron in character, and for me this one is quite a bit more successful in 2019. It has plenty of grip through the body and a silky texture that is very appealing in a wine that will be approachable within a couple of years. Think autumnal fruit with charcoal and cedar oak. 60% new oak. Drinking Window 2025 - 2040
