Grand Puy Lacoste - Pauillac 2022

The history of Grand-Puy-Lacoste is fascinating as it is a timeless family saga that traces its roots back to the 16th century. The name 'Grand-Puy' is derived from the ancient term 'puy,' signifying a 'hillock' or 'small height.' True to its namesake, the vineyard occupies elevated outcrops, boasting a terroir akin to that of the Médoc's premier growths.

In 1978 it became associated with the esteemed Borie family. François-Xavier Borie, the current owner, has played a pivotal role in orchestrating a magnificent renaissance for this Grand Cru Classé in Pauillac. He initiated a comprehensive revitalization effort that encompassed the entire estate. His substantial investments and relentless commitment to enhancing Grand-Puy-Lacoste have consistently elevated the quality of its wines, artfully capturing the finesse of its exceptional Pauillac terroir.

For the 2022 En-Primeur release, in addition to the existing formats, Domaines François-Xavier Borie offer "The Case Variation": this wooden case has an equivalent volume to 12 bottles (or 9 litres) arranged as follows: 1 Double Magnum, 2 Magnums, and 4 bottles. This variation in bottle sizes offers any wine lovers the opportunity to compare the evolution of the wine over time through different formats.

The 2022 vintage - a vintage full of surprises!

Our wine is a deep bright and intense red/purple colour. The bouquet is of flowers, violets in particular, spicy and with very ripe fruits such as blueberries and blackberries. It is completed by a fresh minerality and a note of graphite.

On the palate, there’s a crescendo of flavours, smooth, dense and complex. This 2022 has fine balance, notable freshness and a long finish sustained by powerful but melted tannins. Once again, this remarkable vintage allows Grand-Puy-Lacoste to demonstrate the capacity of our terroir to summon from our vines grapes with richness, complexity and elegance.

This vintage is unique, impossible at the moment to compare with any other! The combination of the ripeness of the fruit and the freshness on the palate makes it a wine of real stature and great longevity.

Amid the widespread drought in the Médoc region, the trees and canals surrounding Château Grand-Puy Lacoste proved to be a lifeline. This vintage yielded grapes that were not only bursting with juice but also reached an ideal yield of 38 hl/ha, ranking among the highest in the appellation. The fruit aromas are both sumptuous and delicate, with an overwhelming cascade of purple lilies so vivid and dewy that they seemed almost alive, leaving me deeply moved. On the palate, the wine flows with a pristine freshness, like a crystalline mountain stream, its texture silky and seamless. The finish carries a velvety richness, reminiscent of fine cocoa. As I tasted this wine, a vision unfolded before me—a single flower blooming under the blazing sun, vibrant and defiant, radiating a beauty that stirs the soul.

The 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste has turned out nicely in bottle, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and plums mingled with notions of rose petal, tobacco leaf and pencil shavings. Medium to full-bodied, bright and velvety, with a layered core of fruit and powdery structuring tannins, it's beautifully balanced.

Rose buds, cassis, crayon, mint leaf, graphite, black tea, this is full of classic Pauillac character in a vintage where that is not a given. It has ridden confidently through ageing and I am still fully on board. Easy to recommend, great stuff. 60% of production in the 1st wine, Eric Boissenot consultant, 75% new oak.

2029-2047 96/100

The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste, observed out of barrel, offers a more sensual and generous bouquet than previous vintages, with blackberry, bilberry and cedar scents emerging from the glass with a hint of pencil box underneath. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, showing more structure than it did from barrel, which is precisely what you want from this Pauillac estate. Tobacco and graphite notes towards the finish linger beautifully in classical style. This is a very impressive wine that will mature with panache and stature.

Licorice with tapenade, cassis, roasted spices and a touch of bergamot and pencil shavings. Full-bodied and structured, this has filigreed tannins in a very dusty, almost powdery form. Really youthful and long. Juicy and compact with spot-on balance. 79% cabernet sauvignon, 21% merlot. Give it at least three years to unwind and develop complexity.

The 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is stellar, especially in the way it melds together the natural richness of the year with its classic style. Well defined, layered and energetic, the Grand-Puy-Lacoste is all class. Time in the glass further reveals its detailed personality. This is such a polished and nuanced Pauillac, even in 2022.

This version shows the floral side of the vintage, with a vibrant mix of iris, violet and rose petal notes leading the way, backed by a core of pure and racy red and black currant preserves. There's a well-integrated singed cedar note running along its flanks and a long beam of iron driving the finish. Textbook. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Best from 2026 through 2042. 10,000 cases made.

Gorgeous vibrant purple colour in the glass, deep and darkly scented, black bramble fruits, flowers, cinnamon, dark chocolate and liquorice. Firm and forward, this is generous but sleek, so you get power and concentration but also juicy liveliness, great tension and energy. I really do like the ease of this, it's not trying too hard but delivered with poise, punch and purity. An excellent wine that really over delivers - so well presented, detailed, finessed and refined but still with the strength coming at the end in the wave of liquorice, dark chocolate and wet stone terroir markers. A brilliant wine with potential to deliver such excellent drinking pleasure. I love it. 3.57pH. A yield of 38hl/ha. 60% grand vin, 40% second wine. Eric Boissenot consultant. Harvest 7-23 September. Yield of 38hl/ha. Ageing in French oak, 75% new.

Amidst the prevailing water scarcity in the Médoc region, the trees and canals encircling Château Grand-Puy Lacoste played a key role in 2022. This vintage boasts juicy grapes, reaching an impressive yield of 38hl/ha, marking it as one of the highest producers in Médoc. Its fruitiness is luxuriously delicate, and the taste is vivid yet smooth, moving me profoundly during the tasting. The initial burst of freshness is akin to a mountain spring, evolving into a rich texture on the palate. This wine, like a "lotus blooming upon water," is a resplendent testament to life's resilience in the face of harsh sunlight, a true gem of the Pauillac region.

The 2022 Grand Puy Lacoste was picked from 7 to 23 September and contains more Merlot due to the high quality of the fruit, matured in 75% new oak. There is 14.2% alcohol. Therefore, this lends this GPL a little more precocity and sensuality compared to other vintages, not cut from the same "classical" cloth as, say, the 2019 or 2020. Underlying this velvety veneer are enticing traits of freshly-rolled tobacco and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with finely-sculpted tannins. Silky smooth in texture, so much so that it belies that backbone underneath. There is a peacock's tail of mineral-rich, quite peppery black fruit on the finish, completing a Pauillac endowed with huge potential.

The 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste, 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, is deep garnet-purple in color. Warm cassis, black cherry preserves, and kirsch aromas leap from the glass, followed by touches of chocolate mint, cedar, and pencil lead. The medium to full-bodied palate features fine-grained tannins and bold freshness to support the tight-knit red and black berry layers, finishing long and lifted. This is wonderfully energetic! pH 3.57.

Grand-Puy Lacoste 2022 (Pauillac; 79% Cabernet Sauvignon; 21% Merlot; pH 3.60; a final yield of 38 hl/ha; Eric Boissenot is the consultant here; tasted at the property with Emeline Borie). Wonderful in this vintage. Initially this is a little closed and restrained aromatically (and it was tasted first thing on a rather damp and cloudy morning). Fresh mint leaf, crushed red and darker berry and stone fruit show first – most notably the redcurrants and then the cassis. A glorious stalky leafiness gives added dimensionality and complexity to the fruit profile. I am struck by the gorgeous freshness of the mid-palate – which is cool and seems it impart considerable forward momentum, the freshness projecting the wine across the palate, the fine-grained tannins detailing and pixilating the layers as it does so. This brings wonderful clarity. A very crunchy berry fruit. Brambles, blackberry and more blackcurrant on the palate. With aeration in the mouth, lovely classic cedar notes are released, though this not yet expressive on the nose. The tannins are wonderfully supple, delicately the tight frame tight and binding the fruit to a very well defined central spine. Salivating, sapid and, because of that, incredibly precise and ‘clean’ on the finish with a little whisper of redcurrant and grape-skin as a parting note.

The 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a very pretty wine. Forward and quite showy, the 2022 comes across as a wine that will drink well with minimal cellaring. Succulent dark cherry, plum, leather, incense and dried herbs are nicely delineated. There’s good complexity and depth, but it is the radiance of the year that is front and center. Hints of blood orange, pomegranate, spice and a pretty rose petal/violet note linger. Drinking window : 2030-2052

Flowers, blackberries, spice, cigar box, black currants, cherries, and cedar open the perfume. On the palate, the wine is sweet, fresh, spicy, chewy, and almost creamy in the dark, red, pit fruit finish. The wine is long, with intensity, complexity, and aging ability. The wine is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, 14.2% ABV, 3.57 pH. Picking took place September 7 - September 23. This is the earliest harvest in the history of the estate. Yields were 38 hectoliters per hectare. Only 60% of the harvest was placed into the Grand Vin. This wine has the potential to score even higher when it is in bottle. Drink from 2027 - 2060.

A blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon and 21% Merlot, the 2022 Grand-Puy-Lacoste is a brilliant classic in the making, wafting from the glass with aromas of dark berries, violets and pencil shavings, followed by a medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated palate that exhibits beautiful structural refinement and purity of fruit. Classy and integrated, it is somewhat reminiscent of a modern-day and less forbiddingly structured version of this estate's brilliant 1982.

Enchanting red berry bouquet, fresh morello juice, dried rosemary, light tobacco, verbena and delicate notes of lilac. On the complex, straightforward palate with silky texture, supportive fine-nerved breed, ripe extract as well as tightly meshed tannin structure. Red plums, waxy notes and grainy astringency on the bundled, finely aromatic finish. A reassuring Pauillac worth seeking out!

Inky depths to the colour. Violet edging, bitter black chocolate and graphite, can feel the grain of the tannins, and the beautiful balance and juice to damson, cassis and plum puree fruits. Captures just the right amount of drama without sacrificing Pauillac character, this is a wine that is clearly going to age extremely well, with depth of flavour and rich tannic frame that shows how 2022 can succeed in the right hands. 75% new oak, 3.57ph. Harvest earliest ever, beginning on September 7 (2003 was September 15), 60% of production in the 1st wine, Eric Boissenot consultant. 38hl/h yield, a little over the Pauillac average.
