Grand Puy Ducasse - Pauillac 2021

Grand Puy Ducasse, the Renaissance of a Grand Cru Classé

The origins of this Grand Cru Classé in 1855 date back to 1675. In 2004, Crédit Agricole acquired the Château.
With its 60 parcels spread throughout the Pauillac appellation, Grand Puy Ducasse presents a singular diversity of terroirs.
The constant progression of the quality of this wine has been noticed for more than 10 years. In 2021, the Renaissance project was launched, which includes the construction of a new vat room, new cellars and a new tourist experience on the docks of Pauillac, on its original land. This renaissance is symbolized by a new label starting from the 2020 vintage, on the occasion of the 200th harvest of the property.

2021 in a few words

PRECISE, DEMANDING, TECHNICAL, AMBITIOUS, REPRESENTATIVE, CONSISTENT, PRAGMATIC, UNIFYING, RESERVED, GRACEFUL.

2021 was more than a “Winegrower’s vintage”. It was also a vintage that required selective sorting, due to the many challenges it faced. This high standards were essential this year in order to produce a precise Grand-Puy Ducasse with delicate notes of cedar.

The 2021 Grand-Puy Ducasse turned out well. Dark red cherry, scorched earth, plum, leather, tobacco and dried herbs stain the palate with intensity. This is an especially savory vintage for Grand-Puy Ducasse. The 2021 is marked by strong Cabernet Sauvignon savoriness and firm tannins that need to soften. Tasted two times.

The samples I tasted of the 2021 Grand-Puy-Ducasse were impressive en primeur, but unfortunately, my expectations haven't been realized in bottle. Offering up aromas of baked red berries and creamy new oak, followed by a medium-bodied, tart and astringent palate, it concludes with a somewhat metallic finish. Can this bottle have been representative? 85?

Fresh and precise nose showing red currants, subtle chili chocolate, mineral and a drizzle of white pepper. More elegant and refined than being dense and compact. Tannins are still firm and vertical on the medium-bodied palate with a subtle finish of very good length. Wait until 2025 to let the tannins soften more.

Taut, but more sleek than trim, with a bright iron spine and good damson plum and black cherry notes that race along, while light savory and tobacco accents flitter in the background. A solid, understated effort. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2035. Tasted twice, with consistent notes. 8,000 cases made, 500 cases imported.  –JM

A precise and focused wine for the vintage and for the chateau, with blackcurrant and iodine character. Medium body. Firm and fresh. Quite tannic. Very well done for the vinrtage.

The 2021 Château Grand-Puy Ducasse showed reasonably well, although it's a touch hollow on the mid-palate, which is a common fault in this vintage. Offering solid notes of blue fruits, iron, lead pencil, and spicy wood, it's medium-bodied, has focused, firm yet quality tannins, and a good finish. It will be interesting to see where this ends up once in bottle. It's certainly good.

Deep crimson. Primary elderberry, blackcurrant aromas with espresso/ mocha notes. Well concentrated elderberry, blackberry, malty flavours, fine persistent chalky al dente textures and pronounced acidity. Finishes firm and drying. 62% cabernet sauvignon, 38% merlot. 18 months in around 35% new French oak. 12.8% alc

Medium-bodied, bright, crisp, crunchy red currants, cranberry and peppery spices open the wine. On the palate the fruits are lively, chewy and fresh, giving this medium-bodied wine a classic-edged, character and style. Drink from 2025-2045. 90-92

The 2021 Grand Puy Ducasse has a tight, backward nose at first, unfolding to offer tobacco-infused black fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly chewy tannins, modest depth, fine acidity and a slightly rustic finish. Not bad considering the vintage.

The 2021 Grand Puy Ducasse is another strong showing from a château that has made important strides of late. Deep and savory, the 2021 offers up a host of strong Cabernet Sauvignon inflections to complement its dark-fleshed fruit. Bright saline notes bring it all together on the deep, structured finish, adding notable energy and vibrancy. Tasted two times.

Mittleres Rubinrot.

An attractive wine, the 2021 Grand-Puy-Ducasse exhibits aromas of dark berries, sweet plums, cedar wood and warm spices. Medium-bodied, deep and layered, it's impressively serious and structured, with bright acids, powdery tannins and a penetrating finish. Under the direction of Anne Le Naour, this 40-hectare estate is seeing significant investments, and the results are really beginning to show. Tasted three times.

Tannins are to the fore here, quite present and mouthfilling, plumping up the layers of wild strawberry and creamy bramble fruit flavours which also have a salinity that is amplified by the mouthwatering and high, racy acidity. This is serious and on the confident side, providing a full mouthfeel that others have struggled with in 2021. No angles and no let up. This will be great to taste once in bottle.
