Fugue de Nénin - Pomerol 2023

Fugue de Nénin, launched in 1997, comes from the sandy-clay soils to the east of the estate and the young vines on the Château's renowned plateau.

Château Nénin's second wine embodies the characteristic elegance of Pomerol. The name 'Fugue' draws inspiration from the realm of music. The wine tasting experience reinforces this musical analogy: Fugue blends seamlessly with the complex profiles of its predecessor, while delivering a delightful and captivating character. Its plush, silky texture allows for earlier enjoyment compared to the Grand Vin, offering a tasting experience that is both immediate and satisfying.

The 2023 Fugue de Nénin never quite clicked into gear from barrel. Now in bottle, it has a light and agreeable bouquet with a subtle herbaceous edge that I can countenance here. The palate is medium-bodied with slightly raw tannins, moderate weight, but it still tapers toward the finish and leaves me wanting more. Early drinking.

Fruit-expressive nose of fresh red berries and red cherries. Medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins and a linear, crunchy finish. Pretty, juicy and vibrant in style. 93% merlot and 7% cabernet franc. Drink or hold.

A fresh and linear character with crunchy fruit and intensity. Medium-bodied and crisp. The texture and purity of fruit is excellent for a second wine.

Mostly Merlot and the second wine from Château Nenin, the 2023 Fugue De Nenin is a deep purple-hued effort offering a juicy, forward, delicious style in its red and blue fruits as well as subtle tobacco, leafy herbs, and chalky earth-like nuances. It's medium-bodied, supple, and elegant.

Medium-bodied, fresh, sweet, bright, and juicy, the wine is on the red berry side of the style range, and will deliver its cherry filled pleasure on release, and for close to a decade after that. Drink from 2026-2034. 89-91 Pts.

A slightly subdued Fugue de Nenin, with plenty of fresh raspberry and fig fruits, juicy acidity, balanced, soft through the finish. For early to medium drinking, enjoyable although the real depths of flavour are found in the main estate wine in this vintage. Harvest September 13 to 28.

The 2023 Fugue de Nénin is potent, explosive second wine. A burst of dark fruit, violet, chocolate, spice and leather announces a wine that packs a serious punch. Today, the young 2023 is quite exuberant and dense, almost shockingly so for a second label.

The 2023 Fugue de Nenin has a straightforward but well-defined bouquet with black cherry fruit, the warmth of the late summer season imparting a scintilla of opulence. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannins, though I find this attenuates quite sharply toward the finish and leaves with a touch of bitterness. I need a bit of convincing on this cuvée.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2023 Fugue de Nenin comes skipping out with ready-to-go notes of juicy plums and ripe blackberries plus suggestions of spice box, fallen leaves, and pencil lead. The medium-bodied palate is soft and lively, with vibrant black fruits and a peppery lift on the finish. The blend is 93% Merlot and 7% Cabernet Franc. The alcohol is 13.3%.
