Franc Mayne (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Château Franc Mayne, a hidden gem in Saint-Emilion!

A heartfelt connection marked a turning point in the history of Château Franc Mayne. Captivated by the charm of this building nestled among the vineyards and the promise of an exquisite wine, the Savare family took over the reins of this 7-hectare property in 2018.

Already discreetly invested in the Bordeaux vineyards, they passionately dedicate themselves to the development of this Grand Cru Classé in Saint-Emilion. They apply the same principles that have led them at the pinnacle of their industry: the pursuit of excellence, commitment, and respect for their values and craftsmanship.

Personally involved, the new owners infuse a fresh dynamism that stems from a dual motivation: to create a characterful wine that fully reflects the richness of the terroir and to establish the estate as a privileged place where one can truly experience the soul of wine.

In 2022, the estate celebrates its "Organic Farming" certification with a special green label.

The 2022 vintage

Sophie Mage tells you about the vintage : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9-llhDQaGps&list=PLez2o_cjTYvjsySqCHnCZInBCJKEJAAQC&index=42

Franc Mayne 2022 is the earliest vintage in Franc Mayne’s history.
A new heroic vintage punctuated by now traditionals spring frost, tricky month of June followed by a heat wave plus drought during summer.
This is an opulent wine with a delicate balance between the powerful caused by this arid context and the energy which makes Franc Mayne identity.
Château Franc Mayne 2022 will be execptional and, for the first time, organic!

Tasting notes

The nose surprises with the freshness of the fruit and its intensity. We recognize cherry, raspberry, associated with more floral notes.
On the palate, we coma black on the cherry, with a minty freshness and a hint of salinity. The touch of the tannic frame is fine and silky with a nice concentration. All punctuated by a remarkable vivacity and energy. A great Franc Mayne!

Since the 2020 vintage, Château Franc Mayne’s fruit aromas have become ever more crisp and refreshing, with this trait especially prominent in the 2022. The juicy notes of cherry and red plum flow like a sweet river from the tip of the tongue, filling the body and leaving every cell immersed in sweetness. The visual impact on the palate is striking—its smooth texture is like melting fresh milk ice cream. As the wine finishes, the tannins show impressive strength, and with careful tasting, one can detect the unique chalky minerality from the clay-limestone terroir. This pure, tempting expression is utterly irresistible.

The 2022 Franc-Mayne has turned out beautifully, bursting with aromas of sweet raspberries and blueberries mingled with espresso roast, spices, rose petals and violets. Medium to full-bodied, suave and seamless, it's lively and textural, with sweet tannins and a long, perfumed finish.

Fleshy blackberry and raspberry fruit, plenty of spice and good tannic grip, touch of smoked caramel and a wave of nuanced floral aromatics. Actually pretty unusual in classified St Emilion today to have a 100% Merlot wine, making this something of a rarity. Located on the limestone plateau and clay-limestone slopes, 37l/h yield, organic farming owned by Thomas Savare and family.

The 2022 Château Franc Mayne is based on 100% Merlot that was raised in 50% new barrels. Spicy black cherries, underbrush, leather, and violet/incense-like notes all define the aromatics, and it's a medium to full-bodied, nicely balanced, concentrated Saint-Emilion that will benefit from 4-5 years of bottle age and keep for 15+ years in cold cellars. I love its complexity, and it develops a terrific sense of minerality with time in the glass.

2026-2044 96/100

The 2022 Franc Mayne has a winsome bouquet with blackberry, raspberry and light rose petal scents. It's well defined with neatly integrated oak. The palate is fresh on the entry, with crisp tannins and a touch of graphite infusing the black fruit tones with a clean and precise finish. There's good sapidity here. This is definitely worth seeking out.

Aromas of blackberries and dark cherries with some fresh herbs such as basil follow through to a full body with silky and slightly chewy tannins and a juicy finish. Fine tannin texture at the end. A structured young Bordeaux. Made from organically grown grapes. Drink after 2028.

The 2022 Franc Mayne is beautiful but also very young. Readers will have to be patient, as the 2022 is a big, dense wine. A blast of dark red-toned fruit, new leather, spice, menthol, licorice and dried herbs fills out the layers. Beautifully long and persistent, Franc Mayne has a lot to offer. This sensual style will provide rewarding drinking for the next several decades.

Juicy, approachable and bright, a lovely purity of fruit with well-integrated tannins. On the lighter, more delicate side in terms of tannic impression and fruit density, just at the point of ripeness but clean and clear with a lovely joyful expression. Juicy strawberries combine with bramble fruits alongside a spicy mineral bite of stones, bitter chocolate and liquorice. Feels a little charged and hot on the finish. A yield of 37hl/ha.

Since the 2020 vintage, I have noticed that Château Franc Mayne's fruity aroma has become even crisper and more refreshing, which is particularly pronounced in the 2022 vintage. The cherries and red plums juices flow from the tongue to the soles of the feet, and every cell in the body seems to be bathed in sweet nectar. The mouthfeel is incredibly smooth and creamy, akin to melting fresh milk ice cream, creating a vivid sensory experience upon entry. The powerful tannins at the finish are imbued with the unique chalky texture of the clay-limestone soil. Confronted with such irresistible temptation, it is hard for me not to be moved.

The 2022 Franc Mayne has an attractive nose with dark cherries, iodine and light floral scents. The oak is nicely incorporated. The palate is rounded on the entry with a slightly viscous texture. Lots of concentration is packed into this Saint-Émilion, but it retains balance and delivers a sumptuous sweet finish. Lovely.

This is good quality, with depth to the smoked earth, sweet red and black fruits, fresh acidities of gooseberry and redcurrant, and smoky creme caramel notes together ith a bitter black chocolate signoff. The tannins close in showing the physiciality of the vintage. New team at Franc Mayne for the past couple of years. First year in organic certification. Thomas Duclos consultant since 2018. 50% new oak barrels and 50% of wooden casks and amphoras.

Beautiful aromatics of red, blue, and black fruits, as well as tobacco and leafy herbs, emerge from the 2022 Château Franc Mayne, a youthful, unevolved, yet pure, concentrated 100% Merlot barrel sample. The tannins here are ripe and nicely integrated, and it has plenty of mid-palate depth as well as outstanding length, all pointing to this being a brilliant wine in the vintage. Tasted twice.

The 2022 Franc Mayne (100% Merlot) is superb. Dense and ripe, the 2022 impresses with its energy and overall tension. I especially admire the energy here. Dark fruit gravel cedar and tobacco, with blood orange and rose petal accents. This could turn out to be special. Drinking window : 2028-2042

The 2022 Franc Mayne is deep garnet-purple in color. Lifted notes of black cherry preserves, redcurrant jelly, and prunes leap from the glass, followed by hints of rose oil and dark chocolate. The full-bodied palate is chock full of black fruit layers, supported by soft tannins and lively acidity, finishing long and spicy.

The wine is rich, supple, long, and fresh with a depth of flavor, freshness, lift and elegance and a salty mineral essence in the finish. The wine sports a new, updated label. The wine was made from 100% Merlot. Drink from 2026-2045.

Superb as the 2020 was, the 2022 Franc-Mayne appears to represent still another step up in quality for this seven-hectare clay-limestone terroir. Offering up aromas of dark berries, plums, raw cocoa, violets and bay leaf, it's medium to full-bodied, deep and fleshy, with a pure and vibrant core of fruit, supple tannins and a long, mouthwatering finish. The label marks this estate's first year of organic certification.
