Grand Corbin Despagne (BIO-ORGANIC) - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2022

Owners of Grand Corbin-Despagne in Saint-Emilion for over 2 centuries, seven generations of the Despagne family have shared the same love for a vineyard and respect for its traditions.

The Despagne name has been inextricably linked with the land of Saint-Emilion since at least the beginning of the 17th century. The oldest known family document is that of the baptism in 1665 of the son of Pierre Despagne, a ploughman, and Lison Raynaud. Their descendant, Louis Despagne, born in 1789, would be instrumental in creating the family’s renown.
In 1812, not far from Cheval Blanc, where Louis’s family were tenant farmers, he settled at a place called Corbin and acquired the first plots to be owned by the family.
His son expanded “Crû Grand-Corbin – propriétaire Despagne”, as the growth was known at the time. It was towards the end of the 19th century that the name Château Grand Corbin-Despagne came into existence.
In the 20th century, Paul Despagne, who was an extraordinary winemaker, developed the good reputation of the growth, making wines of consistently high quality.
Different generations have brought their savoir-faire and when the first official classification of the growths of Saint-Emilion took place, the estate was awarded the rank of Grand Cru Classé.

François Despagne represents today the seventh generation of the same family at this growth. As its manager, he seeks to preserve respectfully those values he has inherited from his ancestors.

François Despagne owns the estate today and conducts all aspects of this subtle wine growing symphony. His devotion to this land, passed down to him from his ancestors, embraces a deep respect for the vineyard’s natural environment. Describing himself as a modern traditionalist, this ambassador of terroir nevertheless keeps a constant eye on modern solutions to enhance and perfect his wines.

Located in the north of the Saint-Emilion appellation, adjacent to Pomerol, the vineyard of Château Grand Corbin-Despagne is situated on two great soil types: sandy-clay with iron deposits and ancient sands over clay.

Each vintage is unique. However, all of them have an undeniable family trait -complex hints of red berry and floral notes, developing with bottle-age towards more spicy nuances and hints of truffle, violets and cherries, underpinned on the palate by delicate, unctuous and velvety tannins.

For a wine that emphasizes a smooth and silky style, it’s difficult to maintain these qualities in a high-tannin vintage such as 2022. However, Château Grand Corbin-Despagne has managed to do so brilliantly. The clay layer under the sandy soil provides ample water to the grapes, and the tannin structure indicates that the grapes have not been hindered by growth stagnation. The aroma is fresh and clear, and the acidity is smooth and flowing, although the complexity is not particularly rich, it is still quite pleasing. It is a Saint-Emilion Grand Cru Classé that can be enjoyed while still young.

The 2022 Grand Corbin-Despagne is ripe and generous, bursting with aromas of sweet berries, plums and creamy new oak. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and enveloping, with lively acids, ripe tannins and a suave, gourmand profile, it will offer a broad drinking window.

A consistently successful estate, here with depth that is maintained through the mid palate, plenty of character and deep black fruits, rosemary and sage, crayon and crushed rocks. Harvest September 1 to 15, 90% new oak 10% amphoras, the rest neutral oak, Francois Despagne winemaker and owner.

The 2022 Château Grand Corbin-Despagne is another inky-hued, powerful Saint-Emilion in the vintage. Possessing a pure, nicely oaked nose of ripe red, blue, and black fruits as well as sappy flowers, violets, and graphite, it hits the palate with medium to full-bodied richness, a juicy, lively mouthfeel, nicely polished tannins, and outstanding length. It offers ample pleasure today yet will have 15-20 years of overall longevity.

The 2022 Grand Corbin Despagne has improved on the nose compared to its showing in barrel with more delineation and freshness. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy black fruit and fine acidity. It's quite peppery on the finish. This is not as complex as its peers, though it deserves a higher score than I awarded it at primeur.

This has aromas of cocoa, walnuts and black cherries, mingling with sandalwood and spices. It’s full-bodied, polished and structured, with firm, slightly dusty tannins. Chewy, concentrated finish. From organically grown grapes. Try from 2028.

The 2022 Grand Corbin-Despagne offers a striking mix of finesse and textural volume. Blue/purplish fruit, lavender, mint and espresso build in the glass. Soft and plush, with no hard edges and stunning balance, Grand Corbin Despagne is impeccable. Bright floral notes lift the finish.

Supple and lively, so bright, so energetic and clean, a lovely instant purity to this, juice and alive with well integrated supportive tannins. Maybe missing a touch more density, but the tannins still have some chewy, velvety grip a long length. Feels finessed and well worked, pure, charming, so easy to drink with lovely elegance. Red fruit, high acidity, lots of life and some salty, stony touches on the finish. Joyful and lifted, a lovely expression and so approachable.

The 2022 Grand Corbin-Despagne has a ripe black cherry and boysenberry jam-scented bouquet with moderate definition. It's a bit ostentatious. The palate is medium-bodied with sweet, fleshy tannins but needs more tension, backbone and grip on the finish.

Blackberry and violet-edging in colour, chewy tannic structure, this flirts with the far edge of extraction but gets it right, with intense dark chocolate and liqourice root, tannins that close in behind the cassis fruits, but just as the palate begins to contrict, it expands to let juice in behind. François Despagne owner at this excellent quality 28.5ha estate. 50% new barrels.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2022 Grand Corbin-Despagne is a tad closed to start, opening out, with coaxing, to notes of prunes, blueberry preserves, and tar with hints of fertile loam, sauteed herbs, and cedar. The medium to full-bodied palate has impressive acidity and firm, grainy tannins supporting the muscular fruit, finishing earthy.

The 2022 Château Grand Corbin-Despagne is a pretty, floral, bright and lively 2022 that has plenty of structure on the palate. Black cherries, blueberries, and spring flowers all define the aromatics, and it has a bright, almost racy spine of acidity, quality tannins, and a great finish. It does well in the vintage and shines for its vibrancy and freshness.

The 2022 Grand Corbin Despagne is stellar. A large-scaled, dramatic wine, the 2022 possesses notable depth and tons of dimension. Inky dark fruit, lavender, licorice, violets and cloves build in a dramatic Saint-Émilion that marries opulence and structure. Clean mineral and savory accents extend the finish. Dark in color, the wine pops with chocolate, licorice, black cherries, plums and flowers in the nose. Medium-bodied, round, fresh and sweet, the dark red fruits with their lush textures, lift and sucrosity create a gorgeous mouth-feel on the mid-palate and in the finish. The wine is produced from blending 75% Merlot, 24% Cabernet Franc and 1% Cabernet Sauvignon. 14.5% ABV, 3.64 pH. Drink from 2025-2045.

Unfurling in the glass with aromas of cherries, sweet berries and plums mingled with hints of spices and licorice, the 2022 Grand Corbin-Despagne is medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with excellent concentration, supple tannins and a bright, lively core of fruit. It's a terrific effort from this under-the-radar estate.
