Favia, Cerro Sur - Napa Valley 2021

Favia Winery, the passion of Annie Favia and Andy Erickson

Favia Winery was founded in 2001 as a partnership between Annie Favia and her husband Andy Erickson. Annie is a passionate viticulturist and a true nature lover whereas Andy is a highly regarded winemaker in Napa who serves as a consultant for prominent wineries. Located in Coombsville, Napa Valley, their philosophy is straightforward: crafting soulful wines that genuinely reflect the unique character of the vineyards they originate from.

Rancho Chimiles, the classic California ranch high in the mountains east of Coombsville, is the home of the Cabernet Franc at the core of our perennially impressive blended red wine, Cerro Sur. These mature vines, in this very special terroir, produce a wine of singular character, aromatic enthusiasm, and fresh, focused flavors.

The 2021 vintage

The 2021 Cerro Sur captures the intensity of the vintage. It was the second year in a multi-year drought in California, so the vines produced a limited crop of very expressive fruit. The Cabernet Franc from this high elevation site delivered a wine with strong varietal character, showing notes of licorice, cardamom, Asian market spices, and bright red cherry.

Around this core, we blended Cabernet Sauvignon, which adds mid-palate weight and a black fruit density, and Merlot , which brings freshness and roundness. Coming up on two decades of experience making this wine from these old vines, we know the aging trajectory of this wine: it will only continue to become more complex and alluring with time in the bottle.

The 2021 Cerro Sur is a blend of 53% Cabernet Franc, 34% Cabernet Sauvignon, and 13% Merlot from Rancho Chimiles Vineyard. Deep garnet-purple in color, it features evocative scents of black raspberries, wild blueberries, and redcurrant preserves leading to hints of pencil shavings, bay leaves, and red roses. The full-bodied palate vibrates with energetic black and red berry layers framed by fine-grained tannins and oodles of freshness, finishing long and perfumed. This is gorgeous!

Old vine, on a volcanic soil and with a northern and eastern exposure, helping to lock in freshness as does the altitude (we’re at over 1000 feet here). A dry but not especially hot vintage. Tiny grapes; a small crop. Incense. Cinders. Struck match. A lovely redolent Cabernet Franc florality. Peonies. Violets. This is spicy too – cinnamon and nutmeg, cracked black pepper. And there’s a touch of lavender. Damson. Dark plum skin. Blueberry. Black berry and bramble. Tobacco leaf. This is so gracious and elegant, lithe, limpid and incredibly refined. Intense and exceptionally concentrated on the palate, but balanced and harmonious. It is never too much. Quite a narrow frame and very linear. Fresh and lifted. The tannins are beady and grainy and yet incredibly fine but increasingly grippy and tender as we near the finish. Needs time, but you don’t really appreciate that until the last third of the development. Plump and juicy and incredibly refreshing. There’s a kind of Ausone quality to this, though the tannins are, of course, rather different!

Andy Erickson and Annie Favia have deftly handled the drought of 2021, and although this is a relatively small and concentrated crop, it has sacrificed none of the nuance that you expect from this winemaking family. Love the aromatics curling out of the glass, beautiful gunsmoke character, and a clear textural feel to the tannins, a little chalky, allowing the grain, depth and florality to come through. Clear brightness and mint leaf through the mid palate, with blueberry and cassis fruits alongside waves of sage and cocoa bean. Wide V trellice system through the growing season that gives a lot of shade potential, and helps capture the acidity. 50% new oak for ageing, bottled unfiltered and unfined. First year back after 2019, with nothing bottled in 2020. Vines on volcanic and sandstone hillside sites just above Coombsville on the eastern side of the valley, heading into the Vaca mountains at 300m altitude.

Mostly Cabernet Franc from a higher elevation site in Coombsville (there's 34% Cabernet Sauvignon and 13% Merlot), the 2021 Cerro Sur is a stunningly beautiful wine offering ripe red and black fruits supported by plenty of chocolate, ripe tobacco, and crushed stone-like minerality. It's full-bodied and has remarkable concentration, ripe, building tannins, and a layered, majestic style that would give a top vintage of Cheval Blanc a run for its money. Give this incredible red blend 3-4 years in the cellar, and it will have over two decades of prime drinking.

Black berry, black olive and bark as well as dark fruits. Some mint and crushed stone. Medium to full body, juicy and velvety texture with lovely layering and depth. A brightness and citrus character behind all the earth and fruit notions.

The 2021 Cerro Sur is bright, aromatic and beautifully focused right out of the gate. Cabernet Franc drives the profile in this intensely aromatic, layered red. Crushed flowers, sweet red berry fruit, mocha, rose petals and blood orange lend notable vibrancy. The Cerro Sur is the most restrained of the Favia reds, but it has a ton of pure pedigree.
