Inglenook, Cabernet Sauvignon - Napa Valley 2021

Inglenook, one of Napa Valley's crown jewel

Founded in 1879 by Gustave Niebaum, Inglenook remains the crown jewel of the Napa Valley under the stewardship of the Coppola family. The property has been bought by Francis Ford Coppola in the 1970’s and the wine is made by Philippe Bascaules, General Director of Château Margaux. The latter successfully carried out the construction of new technical facilities, enabling the teams to achieve even greater precision in the winemaking process.

Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon is a tribute to John Daniel Jr., who produced the much-heralded Inglenook 1941 Cabernet Sauvignon from vine cuttings brought from Bordeaux to the Inglenook Estate by founder Gustave Niebaum. Today, this standout wine is still crafted with organically-farmed fruit grown exclusively on our estate.

The 2021 Vintage:

Welcome rain fell in January and March, nourishing Inglenook’s soil for a healthy bud break. Warmer May temperatures advanced bloom, leading to exceptional Summer growing conditions. Small canopies aided slow and steady sugar accumulation, resulting in a modest yield of exquisite quality. All fruit was hand-harvested between September 1st and October 5th. Practicing organic farming since the 1980’s, Inglenook is one of the first Napa Valley vineyards to be certi¬fied organic in 1994. Experimentation is embedded in Inglenook’s DNA, and within this ongoing evaluation, considerations of climate change, vine age, vintage and other factors reiterate that an estate of Inglenook’s caliber and quality is forever a work-in-progress.

Tasting notes:

This wine boasts a beautifully concentrated red fruit characteristic. The wine’s vibrancy is complemented by a long and satisfying finish, where lingering acidity adds to the overall palate experience. Subtle notes of oak introduce a nuanced complexity to the wine, enhancing its depth. The tannins, elegantly structured, contribute to the wine’s overall refinement.

Inglenook's tightly wound 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon features plenty of bright red berries on the nose, ranging from cherries and redcurrants through to cranberry, all accented by hints of cocoa powder and dried herbs. It's medium to full-bodied, taut and streamlined, with ample energy and length on the softly tannic finish.

Inglenook Cabernet Sauvignon 2021 (Napa Valley; 95% Cabernet Sauvignon; 2.75% Cabernet Franc; 2% Merlot; 0.25% Petit Verdot; 14.5% alcohol; Philippe Bascaules of Chateau Margaux is the consultant oenologist here). I find this very classical. Cassis. Tinder box. A hint of oak smoke. Incense. A light florality – lilac, maybe a touch of lavender. Beeswax. A touch of salinity. Satin-textured and with loads of freshness, bringing a bright lift and luminosity to the mid-palate – all the more impressive given the density and compactness here. A great success. 97.

Silky but muscular tannins, expands through the mid palate, showing intense black fruits, concentrated blackberry pie, grilled sandalwood, graphite and tar, great quality, grips through the palate, long ageing ahead. Todd Devincenzi director, Philippe Bascaules winemaker.

The 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon wraps around the palate with substantial depth and textural intensity. Black cherry, plum, new leather, licorice and incense are all amplified in this potent, brooding Cabernet Sauvignon. The 2021 needs time to soften, but it is promising.

This is serious with a deep dark-fruited character, notes of iodine, black olives, charred bark, smoky flint and raw mushrooms. Full-bodied, so refined and polished with an array of ultra-fine, silky tannins that lasts for minutes. Broad and encompassing with a long finish. Hints of sea shell, iron and umami. Extremely well-made. Better after 2026.

Bright raspberries and cherries are accented by attractive notes of sage and bay on the nose of the 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon. Tasted as a prospective blend prior to bottling, it's really promising, with great texture and length.
