Paul Hobbs, Cristina's Signature - Napa Valley 2021

Paul Hobbs: A Pioneer in Fine Winemaking

To say Paul Hobbs has left his mark on the world of fine wine is an understatement. Over the years, he has become renowned for his ability to identify and cultivate both new and historic vineyards. Whether in California, Argentina, or France, Paul consistently showcases terroir through minimal intervention and meticulous vineyard management, refining the art of winemaking.

Paul Hobbs’ Californian Journey

In 1991, Paul founded his namesake winery in Sebastopol, California. Today, he produces some of Napa Valley's most sought-after Cabernet Sauvignons. One standout estate, Nathan Coombs Estate, named after Napa Valley's founder, features rocky, volcanic soils that impart distinct minerality to the wines. These well-drained soils allow Cabernet Sauvignon to thrive, producing complex, elegant fruit.

The 2021 vintage: 100pts by Colin Hay, The Drinks Business

The 2021 vintage marks the second release of Cristina’s Signature, a wine created by Paul’s wife, Cristina. It will be remembered for its intensely aromatic berries and balanced, nuanced, and vibrant wines. The season began with low rainfall and a cold winter, but the rest of the season was mild. Warm temperatures in May promoted compact flowering and uniform fruit set. Cool mornings and warm afternoons in summer allowed the fruit to ripen slowly. Harvest started on September 6 and yielded young, energetic, and delightful wines.

It is interesting just how, in PH’s natural habitat of the Napa Valley, the suit fits perfectly, whereas when he spreads his wings, most notably in South America, the suit often needs tailoring!  Cristina’s is a lush, expansive wine with gorgeous flavours, balanced with teasing spice and pristine tannins.  It is a prime example of a winemaker’s touch augmenting the fabulous fruit at his fingertips instead of trying to do the impossible.

(Nathan Coombs Estate, Coombsville, Napa Valley; 100% Cabernet Sauvignon; 14.5% alcohol; tasted with Paul Hobbs and then at the Joanne press tasting). Full. Tight. Dense and compact. Graphite and a touch of cedar. So spherical in form – and, interestingly, one senses that already from the aromatics. Cinnamon, white pepper, cassis, a hint of blackcurrant leaf, sage, oregano. Peony and rose petal. So plush, plump and full in the mouth – that spherical form anticipated from the aromatics so vividly present on the palate. Crystalline and limpid, lithe and engaging. I love the little grip of the ultra-fine grained tannins – the Paul Hobbs signature – and the graphite that is the terroir signature, Cristina’s signature. Incredibly long and gently tapering towards a far-distant horizon. So pure and integral, so fine and elegant. A staggering wine with great aging potential that is already fabulously accessible and utterly beguiling. Spectacular.

N°58 TOP 100 JS

A great example of a 2021 from a district of southern Napa that often produces the coolest, most supple cabernets. So dense yet silky and elegant. Graphite, iron, seashell and espresso aromas meet super-concentrated flavors of blackcurrant, blackberry and cocoa, all wrapped in extra-fine tannins that structure it for long aging without being at all harsh to sip now. Fresh and balanced. Drinkable now, but best from 2030.

The aromatics are closed at first, so give this time, allowing the savoury cassis, blueberry, squid ink and saline character to emerge. A joy to taste, and captures the feel of a Cabernet Sauvignon that intends to make you wait, not playing all its cards yet. As it opens, a floral character appears, along with briar patch, hedgerow, full of energy and lift, with great balance. First time on the Place for Paul Hobbs' 29ha Coombsville estate, 45% new oak, a vineyard he bought in 2012. 3.6ph. Tasted twice.
