Dragon de Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2020

Le Dragon is the second wine of Château Quintus. The inspiration for the name came from the dragon statue dominating the magical terroir of Saint-Emilion from the estate’s privileged location, perched on a promontory.
Le Dragon has a beautiful dark red color. The first nose is intense, fruity and fresh. When the wine is swirled in the glass, the nose becomes more complex and a discreet woody note mingles with very ripe black fruit. The first impression is fine and elegant, leading to a fairly dense tannic structure of medium length. The fruit accompanies the structure and substance.
This Le Dragon leaves an impression of exquisite balance. 2020 calls to mind the 2000 vintage and is already considered a fabulous vintage, one which required a tremendous ability to adapt, both for the people involved and for the work of teams in the vineyard and in the vat house.

The property
The story of Quintus is as ancient as that of Saint-Emilion itself, as one of the region’s oldest vineyards, planted as early as the 4th or 5th century B.C. Perched on a limestone promontory (mound) culminating at an altitude of 62 meters, Château Quintus is located on the southwestern extremity of the Saint-Emilion plateau and shares its beautiful exposure and fabulous microclimate with the most renowned properties of this appellation. With 28 hectares of vines, the estate boasts exceptional biodiversity thanks to its two-hectare park with majestic holm oaks, low walls and slopes. The teams’ daily efforts to developing this incredible biodiversity have already been rewarded by a double certification: High Environmental Value and ISO14001.

Tasting
A beautiful dark, purple colour. The wine presents a powerful, fruity first nose, whereas after swirling woody, vanilla-scented hints mingle with aromas of ripe black fruit. A spicy note follows and gives lovely complexity. The first taste is supple and silky, then the wine progresses on a delicate, tightly-knit texture of tannin. The sensation of fleshiness persists, flavours of fruit combine with woody notes and make the wine very charming. Without being as concentrated as its elder brother, this Dragon is particularly delicious and pleasant.

The 2020 Le Dragon de Quintus has a perfumed nose with cedar-scented red berry fruit, forest floor and tobacco aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with light tannins. It is nicely balanced and elegant in style, with a brisk, peppery finish that has the sapidity to tempt you back. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Dragon de Quintus exhibits rich aromas of plums, cassis, dark berries and licorice, followed by a medium to full-bodied, rich and fleshy palate that's ample and enveloping, finishing with a slightly heady, kirsch-inflected finish that reflects its lofty alcoholic degree.

A mild oak hint with floral notes, wild berries and mild spice. Medium weight in a slightly restrained style with grippy tannin and fairly long finish.

The 2020 Le Dragon de Quintus is very nicely done. In 2020, it has an extra kick of freshness that was at times missing from earlier vintages. That energy neatly plays off the natural richness of this site. All the elements are well balanced here. Crushed raspberry, cinnamon, new leather and blood orange linger. This is a terrific showing,

The second wine of Château Quintus, the 2020 Le Dragon De Quintus is one impressive looking barrel sample, offering lots of cassis and black cherry fruits as well as medium to full body, ripe, soft tannins, plenty of tobacco, earth, and green flower notes, and outstanding length on the finish. It doesn't have the richness of the Grand Vin but has lots of class and should drink well for 10-12 years or more.

The 2020 Le Dragon de Quintus has a bold, generous bouquet of licorice-infused black fruit, touches of incense and potpourri emerging with aeration. The palate is very smooth on the entry, quite lush and pure, and lightly spiced, leading to a cohesive, seductive finish of fine length for a Deuxième Vin. This should give 12–15 years of drinking enjoyment.

Opening with flowers, black cherries, black raspberries, plums and dark chocolate, the wine quickly moves to its core of soft, plush, dark red fruits. Fresh, silky and fruity, this is perfect to drink while waiting for the Grand Vin to develop. The wine is a blend of 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc, 15.2% ABV. 90-92

Composed of 84.7% Merlot and 15.3% Cabernet Franc, while possessing an alcohol of 15.2%, the 2020 le Dragon de Quintus has a deep garnet-purple color and notions of plum preserves, kirsch, black raspberries and cinnamon toast, plus hints of mossy tree bark and incense. The full-bodied palate is jam-packed with juicy black and red berries, supported by soft tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and spicy.

Tiefdunkles Rubingranat, opaker Kern, violette Reflexe, zarte Randaufhellung.
