Quintus - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2020

LIMITED QUANTITY

The property

The story of Quintus is as ancient as that of Saint-Emilion itself, as one of the region’s oldest vineyards, planted as early as the 4th or 5th century B.C. Perched on a limestone promontory (mound) culminating at an altitude of 62 meters, Château Quintus is located on the southwestern extremity of the Saint-Emilion plateau and shares its beautiful exposure and fabulous microclimate with the most renowned properties of this appellation. With 28 hectares of vines, the estate boasts exceptional biodiversity thanks to its two-hectare park with majestic holm oaks, low walls and slopes. The teams’ daily efforts to developing this incredible biodiversity have already been rewarded by a double certification: High Environmental Value and ISO14001.

Tasting
A magnificent deep, purple colour. The concentration sensed on the first nose is impressive. When swirling the wine, aromas of very ripe red and black fruit mingle with spicy hints and give a superb sensation of complexity. The first taste feels ample and fleshy and then the wine develops, full of flavour, on a flawless, tightly-knit, juicy texture of tannin. The wine stretches out in length with a lot of taste. The Cabernet Franc, representing more than 30% of the blend, undeniably structures this vintage, while giving it freshness too. A superb Quintus.

The 2020 Quintus has a wonderfully harmonious bouquet with black fruit, briar, a touch of wild mint and beautifully integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with silky tannins and a fine bead of acidity. It is perhaps modern in style, but even blind, this just oozes class and sophistication. Despite the high alcohol, this manages to pull it all off. Tasted blind at the annual Southwold tasting.

The 2020 Quintus is one of the most successful renditions of this wine to date, offering up aromas of dark cherries, wild berries, sweet spices and licorice framed by nicely integrated new oak. Full-bodied, seamless and integrated, it's fleshy and layered, with powdery tannins, succulent acids and impressive overall balance despite its 15.4% alcohol. Indeed, while this is obviously a powerful, broad-shouldered Saint-Émilion, in terms of oak and extraction it's far from excessive. The blend is 62.5% Merlot with 37.5% Cabernet Franc.

The nose indicates high ripeness yet with a good sense of freshness, darker fruit notes, blackberry, cassis and well concealed oak. The palate has good density in a medium body, ripe tannin and fresh acidity underneath nice dark fruit and a fine length.

The 2020 Quintus is wonderfully promising. Soft contours and generous fruit give it tons of immediate appeal. Blueberry, mocha, lavender, spice and new leather are some of the aromas and flavors that emerge over time. More than anything else, though, Quintus impresses with its harmony. The 2020 is one of the finest vintages I have tasted here.

A big, velvety textured wine, especially in the vintage, the 2020 Château Quintus offers a gorgeous array of pure crème de cassis and black raspberry fruits as well as leafy herbs, graphite, and chocolate. These all carry to a full-bodied Saint-Emilion with a round, mouth-filling texture, ripe tannins, and a great finish. This estate has been firing on all cylinders of late, and this should be in the same realm as the 2016, 2018, and I suspect, the 2019.

The 2020 Quintus is very delineated and focused on the nose, offering ebullient black cherries and raspberry fruit, crushed stone and a subtle marine element that develops with aeration; great energy here. The palate is medium-bodied with lithe tannins, a perfect line of acidity and just a slight bitterness that imparts the necessary tension and sapidity on the finish. This is a very suave Saint-Émilion that will be difficult to resist in its youth.

Exuberant and confident, with powerful damson and black cherry fruit flavours on the nose. Chocolate and liquorice run through the palate from beginning to end, and this is full of signature St-Emilion glamour. It has a round and supple texture through the mid palate, but the alcohol hides some of the limestone nuance at this point - it will no doubt emerge more clearly with 8 to 10 years in bottle. Harvest 11th September for the Merlot grapes and 23rd September for the Cabernet Franc.

Deeply colored, the wine is packed with nuances of crushed rocks, black raspberries, flowers, plums and forest leaves. Extremely poised and polished, the silky palate offers purity in the fruit, length and the sense of minerality, finishing with an array of red pit fruits, cocoa and salty tannins. The wine blends 62.5% Merlot with 37.5% Cabernet Franc, 15.2% ABV. 95-97

The 2020 Quintus is a blend of 62.5% Merlot and 37.5% Cabernet Franc, weighing in with an alcohol of 15.4%. Displaying a deep purple-black color, it leaps from the glass with bold notes of crushed blackberries, boysenberries and stewed plums, plus suggestions of chocolate mint, clove oil, lilacs and star anise. The full-bodied palate is densely laden with rich black fruits and floral accents, framed by well-balanced acidity and finely grained tannins, finishing with great length and impressive energy. Judging from this barrel sample, this is the finest, most complex and complete Quintus yet—bravo!

Dunkles Rubingranat, violette Reflexe,, dezenter Wasserrand. Tabakig unterlegte schwarze Beerenfrucht, Nuancen von Brombeeren, zart florale Noten. Saftig, reife Herzkirschen, süße Textur, frisch strukturiert, mineralisch-zitronig, Nuancen von Cassis, balanciert und gut anhaftend, sicheres Reifepotenzial.

Wow. This is very chalky and salty with lots of mineral character. It shows lots of purple fruit and firm tannins. Racy and bright. Chewy yet fine tannins. Gorgeous. Gets better and better.
