Craggy Range - Aroha (Martinborough) - Wairarapa 2021

Established in 1998, Craggy Range is a family-owned winery situated in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in the premium wine-growing area of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

When the owners Terry and Mary Peabody set out to start a winery with world-class aspirations, their search quickly brought them to New Zealand. Looking down from Te Mata Peak onto the land where Craggy Range now stands, they envisioned a winery and experience that truly evoked the region's unique landscapes and heritage. The Peabody family then focused on the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing district in Hawke's Bay and Te Muna Road in Martinborough to produce a collection of iconic wines that speak very much of their place.

Te Muna Road, Martinborought

The Martinborought district was originally selected for its unique combination of soils and climate. Martinborought has two significant climatic influences: the wind and the warmth.
Two distinct terraces make up the vineyard, one comprising alvi-fulvic soils that are more than 20,000 years old and at higher altitudes. This produces exceptional Pinot Noir, which stylistically shows incredible complexity, a reserved intellectual feel, and great length.

The 2021 vintage

Tasting notes

A traditional burgundy in colour with a soft crimson hue. A very savoury Aroha from 2021 with chanterelle mushroom and white truffle aromas dominating the bouquet. The palate is lively and pure, focusing towards a red fruit core, whilst the tannins are prevalent but balanced. The concentration of flavour is high as a result of the low yield. Plenty of personality in a wine that will continue to soften with age.

Where the 2020 Aroha Pinot Noir is obvious in its outlay of pleasure (the fruit, the tannins and the whole bunches are all distinct characteristics within the wine as a whole), the 2021 Aroha Pinot Noir is a far more svelte, flowing affair with a seamless transition between fruit, tannin and whole bunch (32%). It is characterized by black cherries, a hint of kirsch, black tea, star anise, clove and dehydrated orange peel, jasmine tea, raspberry and a hint of graphite and cocoa dust. This is a really exciting wine here, and it's a statement for New World Pinot. 13.5% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

This is crunchy and vibrant, with raspberry, soft floral aromatics and fresh acidity, deepened by waves of blueberry and morello cherry through the mid palate. Subtle toasted oak, with warm incense, cumin and smoke as it opens. 2021 saw an extremely similar growing season to last year's excellent 2020 vintage, but this year they increased whole bunch fermentation from 20% to 50%, and lowered the new oak to 27%, still native yeast fermentation, unfiltered with a light fining. In organic conversion. Director David T Peabody, chief winemaker Julian Grounds, from the Te Muna Road region of Martinborough. You can keep this a few years, or enjoy it now.

Aroha Craggy Range 2021 (Te Muna Road, Martinborough, New Zealand; 100% Pinot Noir; a final yield of 25 hl/ha; aged in French oak barrels, 30% of which were new; pH 3.69; 13.5% alcohol). From the Maori word for love. The second release of this wine. Subtle and delicate on the nose, but with a pleasing sense of vertical lift. Crisp, crunchy plump raspberry and red stone fruits, wild thyme, girolles and white tuffle and a hint of wood smoke. Also, fresh buttered corn seared in a pan and a little toasted brioche; a touch of espresso coffee too and roasted walnut shell. Very soft and gracious on the attack with ultra-fine grained, juicy but substantial tannins. Fresh and with plenty of sapidity, accentuated by the slightly ferrous and distinctly saline minerality. Long and nicely delineated on the finish. Impressive.

The 2021 Aroha Te Muna Pinot Noir was fermented with 32% whole bunches. Medium ruby-purple in color, it opens with vivacious notions of cranberry preserves, pomegranate, lavender, and jasmine tea, with star anise and Sichuan pepper in the background. The medium-bodied palate is bright and youthful, with lively red berry flavors and herbal undertones, framed by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and perfumed.
