Craggy Range - Aroha (Martinborough) - Wairarapa 2020

Established in 1998, Craggy Range is a family-owned winery situated in the shadow of the spectacular Te Mata Peak in the premium wine-growing area of Hawke's Bay, New Zealand.

When the owners Terry and Mary Peabody set out to start a winery with world-class aspirations, their search quickly brought them to New Zealand. Looking down from Te Mata Peak onto the land where Craggy Range now stands, they envisioned a winery and experience that truly evoked the region's unique landscapes and heritage. The Peabody family then focused on the Gimblett Gravels Winegrowing district in Hawke's Bay and Te Muna Road in Martinborough to produce a collection of iconic wines that speak very much of their place.

Te Muna Road, Martinborought

The Martinborought district was originally selected for its unique combination of soils and climate. Martinborought has two significant climatic influences: the wind and the warmth.
Two distinct terraces make up the vineyard, one comprising alvi-fulvic soils that are more than 20,000 years old and at higher altitudes. This produces exceptional Pinot Noir, which stylistically shows incredible complexity, a reserved intellectual feel, and great length.

2020 vintage

“2020 is a vintage that, side-by-side with 2019, will be considered the greatest back-to-back in our winery’s history. Truly one to celebrate. The winter of 2019 broke quickly, and immediately we were presented with above-average temperatures and below-average rainfall during spring in both regions. Flowering conditions were near perfect. The ripening period was warm and remarkably consistent and phenolic ripeness was achieved early."
- Julian Grounds, Chief Winemaker

Tasting notes

A traditional Burgundy in colour with a soft crimson hue. The nose has instant sweet brambly fruit, wild berries and porcini mushrooms. From the moment the wine hits the palate, it is evident that this is a Pinot of presence. The tannins are pure silk and carry a veil of high tone berry flavours wrapped in a savoury blanket. The velvety tannins linger, giving the wine a generous length. A truly iconic wine from an unforgettable vintage.

The 2020 Aroha Pinot Noir leads with roasted cherry, pink peppercorns, Sichuan peppercorns and pomegranate molasses on the nose. In the mouth, the wine is taut and fine, with a silky flow of flavor that trickles through the fine tannic structure. All things are in place. It is both svelte and harmonious, powerful and long, and it's exciting drinking; the 70% whole bunch brings a swathe of exotic spice to the show and sits within the fruit and experience as a whole. This has a long future ahead, make no mistake. 13.8% alcohol, sealed under screw cap.

This is a very stylish, plump and fleshy pinot that has a sweetly spicy, floral and fragrant nose with ripe red and dark cherries, as well as sappy, forest leaves and gentle, earthy tones. Complex, young and fresh. The palate has such supple and sappy cherries and blueberries with a fresh, tangy line of acidity and a long, polished finish. Impressive. Drink or hold. Screw cap.

Smells so good, these are aromatics that you want to dive into. Beautifully sculpted, with waves of redcurrant, blueberry, peach blossom, lemongrass and gunsoke that roll around the palate, the definition of retro-olfaction. So gulpable, and full of generous but delicate Pinot Noir chracter. The name, by the way, means love in the Maori language. Harvest March 20, after a great vintage in New Zealand, up there with the excellent 2019. 70% whole bunch. 34% new oak.

The 2020 Pinot Noir Aroha Te Muna Road Vineyard is a serene, mouthcoating style that soothes your palate and could be served to the sound of pan pipes. It conveys a sense of rich, unadulterated fruit and broadens in the mouth before the combination of acidity and drawn-out gravelly tannins pulls the wine together, lending purpose and freshness. Expect strawberry fruit alongside lifted herbal and violet tones (courtesy of a whopping 70% whole bunch – this was a ripe vintage, and winemaker Grounds felt it needed this for moreishness). Wild-fermented in French oak barrels and matured over 14 months before bottling, the oak is well integrated, supporting discreetly rather than standing out. Note that this is the first time Aroha has been made without any Abel clone fruit, because there was rain when it was ripening and Grounds felt it lacked the “excitement” to go in the blend.
