Craggy Range - Aroha (Martinborough) - Wairarapa 2022

Craggy Range, established in 1998, is a family-owned winery located in the Hawke's Bay region of New Zealand, near Te Mata Peak. Founded by Terry and Mary Peabody, the winery was created with a vision of producing world-class wines that reflect the region’s unique landscapes. Focusing on the Gimblett Gravels in Hawke's Bay and Te Muna Road in Martinborough, Craggy Range has built a reputation for crafting iconic wines deeply connected to their terroir.

Te Muna Road, Martinborought

The Martinborought district was originally selected for its unique combination of soils and climate. Martinborought has two significant climatic influences: the wind and the warmth. Two distinct terraces make up the vineyard, one comprising alvi-fulvic soils that are more than 20,000 years old and at higher altitudes. This produces exceptional Pinot Noir, which stylistically shows incredible complexity, a reserved intellectual feel, and great length.

The 2022 vintage:

The vintage of 2022 was defined by an extremely warm December and January. In both regions, up until this point, we’d be tracking as being an average year. However, a considerable temperature spike in these months accelerated the vine growth and, most importantly, physiological ripeness. This was critical when rainfall events occurred during February and March and showed the value of our soils’ free-draining nature.

Tasting notes:

In the glass, this 100% Pinot Noir is bright burgundy with a light crimson hue. Ample perfume. A complex bouquet of glazed cherries, lavender and thyme. A fine-boned structure, red fruit dominated-very focused and pretty. It’s an elegant Aroha release that is already showing tremendous approachability.

This wine has been hanging out in the top echelons of the NZ Pinot scene for a good few years, and its clarity of fruit, ethereal texture and epic length are just a few of the reasons it has achieved this fame.  But over and above these traits, the singular flavour of the fruit in Aroha is well and truly sensational.  Can you believe it?  You can drink this wine now, but the acid line and profound minerality will carry it for a decade.

Fragrant and finessed, with bay leaf, cranberry, crushed raspberries, tobacco and waves of soft incense and gunsmoke. Gathers in strength over the palate, and the tannic arcitecture will clearly sustain ageing but it's finely spun enough to go young if you prefer. Gorgeous vineyard in Martinborough, natural yeast fermentation, unfined with light filtration. 35% new oak for ageing, barely perceptible even now, save for a remembrance of sweet charred cherry on the finish. Director David T Peabody, chief winemaker Julian Grounds.

(Te Muna, Martinsborough, New Zealand; 100% Pinot Noir; hand-harvested in several tries and entirely destemmed; a final yield of 25 hl/ha; pH 3.75; 13.5% alcohol). Vertical. Lifted, lithe and engaging. Bright and crisp with a lovely crushed red berry fruit profile – redcurrant, cranberry, wild strawberry and loganberry, all à point. Fluid and dynamic, with lots of energy and sapidity, dynamism and, again verticality. But there’s impressive depth and substance here too and the potential for quite long term aging. Lovely precision and purity.

A fresh and vivid pinot with lightness and brightness. Medium-bodied with fine tannins and a crisp finish. Attractive strawberry flavors at the end. More delicate than usual but delicious. Nice to drink now.
