Nez boisé, cerise. Bouche tannique, tendue, sans dureté, assez joli fruit, sérieux.

A blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc, the 2017 Clos Marsalette sports a deep ruby color as well as medium-bodied, perfumed notes of blackberries, crushed violets, leafy tobacco, and bay leaf. It’s seamless, elegant, and incredibly polished, with ripe tannin. It shows the more charming, forward style of the vintage, yet should age nicely on its balance and purity.

The 2017 Clos Marsalette is dark, racy and voluptuous. Because of the frost, Clos Marsalette has more Cabernet Sauvignon than is typically the case. Dark red and stone fruit, gravel, smoke grilled herbs and licorice all meld together. Racy and pungent, with tons of personality, Clos Marsalatte is a winner. Tasted two times.

Medium bodied with a sweet, smoky, black cherry character, the wine is forward, soft and earthy and will definitely drink well for at least a decade.

The 2017 Clos Marsalette was picked from 14 to 25 September at 22hl/ha, matured in 40% new oak. It has quite a high-toned bouquet with iodine scents infusing the blue and red fruit, quite glossy in style. The palate is medium-bodied with grainy tannin, broody dark fruit but the finish is a little flat and missing freshness.

Composed of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon and 30% Merlot, the deep garnet-purple colored 2017 Clos Marsalette has lovely crushed red and black currants with notions of violets, cinnamon stick and garrigue. Medium-bodied, fine-grained and refreshing, it has appealing restraint and a mineral tone to the finish.

Tight, firm and confidently extracted black fruits develop a slightly bitter tinge and close in on the final section. It has stayed true to the estate signature, but where that works brilliantly in years with concentrated, rich fruits, it struggles a little for balance here.

70% Cabernet Sauvignon, 25% Merlot, 5% Cabernet Franc.

Tight center palate of dark fruit and hints of dark chocolate. Walnuts, too. Medium to full body and firm and silky tannins. Smart winemaking.

Lovely dark plum and cassis flavors are creamy and alluring in this red, while dark tea and iron notes flow underneath. The long finish is quite suave, with a nice mineral note throughout.—J.M.
