Clos Fourtet - Saint-Emilion Grand Cru 2015

Winter 2015 lasted until the last days of March. The frosts, frequent, cool the grounds and delay the bud burst of the vine. Thanks to a fortnight of April at summer temperatures, everything is accelerating! The growth of the vines is fast and regular, we see a beautiful output of bunches. It is feared in May some black rot attacks due to a generous rainfall, then the sun sets in, especially with drought. Flowering is therefore fast and grouped, as only the great vintages offer. At the end of July, depending on the soil, some water stress is observed. We must ask questions about soil management, work or not, unlock! Thus veraison takes place like flowering, and good weather continues. From the first days of September, we think of a beautiful vintage, and the days that pass us dream of the great vintage. It will be! This kind of vintage that leaves you the choice to pick up as you wish. That of the expression of styles, of creativity. A vinification to be purified as the raw material evokes haute couture!

Nez épicé et fruité de toute beauté. La texture est d’une noble consistance. Grande bouche, parfaitement articulée et finale au tanin soyeux. C’est un vin avec une grande énergie et un tanin superbe

An arousing blend of silky, supple textures, opulent, sensuous fruits, rich, intense flavors, length and purity, this wine is like basking on the sands of St. Tropez with Scarlett Johansson by your side. Smoke, licorice and kirsch liqueur with a strong sense of minerality are all over the place! This dazzler delivers a finish that will roll over in your mind for days. Voluptuously textured, the wine is a blend of 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc, reaching 14% alcohol with a pH of 3.70. The harvest took place from September 18 to October 12 and the wine is aging in 60% new, French oak barrels.

The 2015 Clos Fourtet is a blend of 90% Merlot, 7% Cabernet Sauvignon and 3% Cabernet Franc, and it was picked between 18 September and 12 October. It has a voluminous bouquet with sweet cassis and blueberry aromas, rather smudged with violets coming through with aeration. The palate is medium-bodied with rounded tannin, ripe and voluptuous, dark chocolate infusing the red and black fruit with a touch of mint on the structured, graceful finish. What a fabulous Saint Emilion from Mathieu Cuvelier and his team - Clos Fourtet with breeding and class. It deserves 5-8 years in bottle.

Beau tannin velouté et précis, fruit frais, allonge enrobée, superbe équilibre, grand volume. De la race et de la saveur. Subtil, onctueux, crémeux, mais intense.

Reticent nose but fragrant palate. Supple texture with plentiful but fine tannins. Length and freshness on the finish – the stamp of the limestone terroir evident. Persistent.

The 2015 Clos Fourtet is unusually rich and sumptuous in this vintage. Exotic aromatics, a huge core of fruit and ample, soft contours give the 2015 much of its striking personality. Although quite racy and unctuous today, the 2015 is going to need a number of years to shed its baby fat before it is even close to showing all it has to offer. This is a compelling effort from the Cuvelier family and consulting winemakers Stéphane Derenoncourt and Julien Lavenu. The blend is 88% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon and 2% Cabernet Franc. Tasted two times.

A Stéphane Derenoncourt wine. Lively and fresh on the nose. Great balance and fruit. Dry on the end but very classic. Drink 2024-2036.

96-98. Barrel Sample. Full of dusty tannins, this is an impressive, powerful and structured wine that will develop nicely. It has great presence with its dark fruits, solid texture and concentrated berry flavors.

Bravo ! Assemblage : 88 % merlot, 2 % cabernet franc, 10 % cabernet sauvignon.

Aufgerundet, Potentialwertung: 18/20 2025 – 2042

This is very velvety and flamboyant with a sexy mouthfeel and rich and delicious fruit. Exotic and more-ish. All there. So much fun to taste.

Enticing, with raspberry, plum and boysenberry fruit taking hold from the start, followed by lively spice and black tea notes. The finish is threaded with a fine chalky spine. Focused and refined.—J.M.
