Clos Apalta Vinothèque - Valle De Colchagua 2015

100PTS BY JAMES SUCKLING
"Formed, sculptured yet soulful. A monumental wine for Chile. Unbelievable. "

Clos Apalta Vinothèque 2015, the first vintage to earn a perfect 100pts rating.

Founded in 1997 by Alexandra Marnier Lapostolle and her husband Cyril de Bournet, Clos Apalta is an iconic Chilean wine, originating from a terroir as unique as it is exceptional. This "Legend of Chile" is located in the Apalta Valley, an appellation officially recognized in 2018.To showcase the exceptional ageing capabilities of Chile's fine wines, Charles de Bournet, representing the 7th generation at the head of the estate, initiated the "Clos Apalta Vinothèque" project, starting with the 2012 vintage.

After a decade of tranquil ageing in bottle and optimal storage conditions in Clos Apalta's modern underground cellar, the 2015 vintage is now ready to join the cellars of wine lovers. A decade later, the wine is characterized by polished tannins, heightened complexity, and an elegance refined by the passage of time.

Clos Apalta Vinothèque 2015 received a perfect score of 100 points.

The 2015 Vintage :

Winter 2014 was considered as rainy in Apalta, with higher temperatures compared to the previous season. Spring had moderate temperatures allowing good bud break and blooming, with both being very homogeneous. Summer was more temperate than usual, with some heat waves that lasted for 5 consecutive days in January. The 2015 march was the warmest of the last decades. However, grapes showed excellent quality when picked with a good aromatic expression and good tannic structure.

Tasting notes :

This wine has a dark, deep red color with purple edges. The nose is bold and expressive, offering aromas of ripe black fruits such as blackcurrant and plums, complemented by hints of licorice and cedar. Subtle notes of oak and spices emerge on the finish, adding depth and complexity. On the palate, it is concentrated and dense, with broad tannins that open up to reveal a silky smoothness and flavors of chocolate and mocha. The finish is exceptionally long and complex.

There is a subtle complexity on the nose with currant, berry, fresh herb and wet earth aromas. Cut fresh flowers, too. Full body, dense and powerful. Incredible character here with such purity and polish. It goes on for minutes. Formed, sculptured yet soulful. A monumental wine for Chile. Unbelievable. More powerful than the 2014 which was 100 points. A blend of 46% carmenere, 30% cabernet sauvignon, 19% merlot and 5% cabernet franc. Made from biodynamically grown grapes. Better in 2022.

Lithe. A little touch of trompette de la mort. Truffle, but just a hint. This teases with subtle hints of the cigar box and truffle secondary notes to come. Plums and damsons once again, blueberries. Incense. Patchouli candles. Graphite. Cedar. Walnut shell. Olive tapenede. This has a very croquant (crunchy) fruit for a wine already a decade in bottle. So youthful. So youthfully fresh, with a lovely sapid wave arriving just on the finish. Excellent, even if I sense yet more precision in the more recent vintages.

Rich and refined, with lively spice and white pepper accents to the mouthwatering flavors of blackberry, currant and dark plum. Dark chocolate and cardamom notes emerge midpalate, showing a creamy texture. Minerally details grace the vibrant finish. Carmenère, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. Drink now through 2025. 6,121 cases made.
