Quintessa - Napa Valley 2014

Quintessa, a "Cru" in the heart of Napa Valley

Nestled in the heart of Rutherford, Quintessa is a 280-acre site that reflects a diversity of geology, biodiversity, exposures and microclimates. Captivated by this extraordinary setting, founders Agustin and Valeria Huneeus believed that it was destined to become one of the world’s great wine estates.

At Quintessa, the harmony of the place is remarkable. People, vines, wildlife, plants, forests, and lakes all contribute to a natural ecosystem that the team is dedicated to preserving. The estate spread over 160 acres planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère, across 26 distinct vineyard blocks. Each block possesses its own unique character, and the team is dedicated to fully expressing the essence of each one. To achieve this, they have collaborated with experts in geology, terroir, biodiversity, and climate to intimately understand their terroir. Each parcel is farmed organically and biodynamically and vinified individually to preserve and enhance their nuances.

The 2014 vintage

Weather conditions

2014 was a year when Mother Nature showed us her power and her grace. The third year in a drought cycle and a harvest beginning with a magnitude 6.0 earthquake created drama and awe. In the midst of this, however, we experienced a near perfect growing season with no heat waves and a bountiful harvest that ripened with excellent acidity and flavor.

Tasting notes

The 2014 Quintessa emerges gracefully: soft notes of bramble fruit with touches of crème brûlée lift from the glass with swirling and aeration. A well-structured wine, the 2014 vintage will drink well now while continuing to harmonize with additional aging.

Quite full-bodied, bold and muscular, this wine, poured from a magnum, runs deep on the palate and long on the finish. Black cherries, dark chocolate, graphite and cocoa on firm, polished tannins that will give the wine at least ten more years of powerful enjoyment. As good or better than when reviewed several years ago. Drink or hold.

Poured from magnum, Quintessa's 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon with Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Carménère. Deep garnet in color with a touch of brick, it swans out of the glass with showy scents of boysenberry preserves, stewed black cherries, and fruit cake, followed by suggestions of dried roses, cumin seed, and star anise. The full-bodied palate delivers mouth-coating black fruit preserves flavors with loads of exotic spice accents and a velvety texture, finishing long and opulent. Lookin' good!

As Napa’s 2014 vintage continues to age in the bottle, top producers like Quintessa show that this underdog vintage may yet outshine the highly-praised 2013 vintage. Nearly a decade on, it is still totally youthful with exuberant toasty oak notes and inky black fruit marred in a bed of sagebrush and bay laurel. It’s an aromatic walk in the woods around the hills of Rutherford. Medium to full-bodied with supple dark-berry fruit redolent of black cherry, blackberry and boysenberry, dusted with Indian spices of cumin and cardamon, laced with vanilla and dark chocolate. While drought conditions led to seriously concentrated flavour, the tannin profile benefited from some extra skin tannin, showing powerful and supple with length and building on the finish. Will continue to improve with cellaring. 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, 1% Petit Verdot, 1% Carmén?re. Harvest: September 5 – October 6, 2014. 21 months in 80% new French oak barrel.

A blend of 89% Cabernet Sauvignon, 7% Merlot, 2% Cabernet Franc, and 1% each Carmenère and Petit Verdot, the medium to full-bodied 2014 Proprietary Red Wine is drinking very well at the moment, with suave mint and dusty-earth notes accenting ripe cherries. It's lighter and brighter in character than either the 2015 or 2017, coming across as particularly fine and elegant despite being matured in 80% new French oak. *This is probably the best set of wines I have yet tasted from the Huneeus family, who own this beautiful property off the Silverado Trail south of the Meadowood Resort.*

A less celebrated vintage than the 2013 but for me this is the more successful of the two, certainly if you are looking to drink it in the next few years. This was the second drought summer in the Napa Valley, and perhaps the vines were adapting, or perhaps the significant earthquake that struck at the end of August released ground water. What is certain is that there is a tenderness and a flexibility to the tannins that is extremely appealing, and the raspberry and blackberry fruits are wrapped in gourmet brioche and smoked caramel, while given lift by crushed mint and eucalyptus on the finish. Aromas of spearmint, sweet tobacco, cigars and blackcurrants follow through to a medium to full body, very polished and refined tannins and an intense finish. Extremely fine and long. Savory. Extremely long finish. Biodynamically grown.
