Château Talbot - Saint-Julien 2005

At a rather cold and dry winter, followed a spring at high temperatures which allowed the vine to fill a certain delay in bud burst to bloom beautifully and in a grouped way in the first days of June (mid-bloom Merlot: 30may) This key date has "programmed" the grape harvest on September 19, 2005 (112 days of mid-bloom on Merlot, at Talbot = optimum technological maturity of this grape variety) A particularly dry summer, occurring after a winter too little Watered, combined with very cool nights throughout the months of July, August and September, we saved a few more days and Thursday, September 15 we could pick up the first bunches of sugar richness rarely equaled (14. 5 ° suitable for the first tank) and high quality polyphenols. The great troop arrived on September 20 and masterfully gathered in a large colorful ballet the different plots, one after the other without any particular problem. The grapes were healthy, ripe and all of great quality: their tasting, in the field, made it possible to group plots that looked like each other or, on the contrary, to attempt some assemblages before the letter, before the vinification, which, by experience, allowed us to hope some exceptional vats where a synergy worked well before the assembly of the wines made ...

The 2005 Talbot is dense ruby/purple, with moderately intense notes of forest floor, underbrush, and black and red currant fruit. It is slightly herbal, medium-bodied, not terribly complex, but has good sweet fruit, and a decent finish. This wine should drink well for another 15 years.

Mid crimson. Markedly light and slightly stony on the nose. Clean and fresh. Sprightly but it actually tastes like a less concentrated vintage than 2005. Mid everything? But at least it’s well mannered.  13% Drink 2018-2030(16.5+)

On perçoit un début d'évolution, la robe commence à tuiler et le nez bascule dans un registre plus confit. La bouche est souple, ronde et agréable, d'ampleur moyenne.

Tasted single blind at Southwold. One of the best Château Talbot in recent years with a striking nose of Doris plum and damson, smoke developing with aeration and then ripe blueberry scents. Perhaps it is a bit heavy handed with the oak. The palate has good extraction, sappy black fruit, nice acidity with touches of iodine. It is surprisingly lush and expressive on the finish. This is a Talbot that should motor along nicely for two decades, maybe more. Drink 2011-2030. Tasted January 2009.

A strong effort for Talbot, the 2005 is more showy and forward than most wines of this vintage. While there is plenty of tannin, it is sweet and well-concealed behind an intriguing bouquet of sweet herbs, licorice, smoked game, black currants, and cherries. This fleshy, medium to full-bodied St.-Julien exhibits a silky sweetness to its texture and tannins. Anticipated maturity: 2010-2020+.

Sweet tobacco, berry and currant aromas follow through to a full body, with soft, silky tannins and a fresh, racy aftertaste of currant and mineral. The texture of the tannins is very beautiful. Best after 2016.

Looks quite evolved. Fragrant, relatively loose on the nose. already quite developed. Doesn't seem teribly ambitious given the year. Perfectly pleasant but surely this could be more concentrated and exciting.

Talbot is performing better than it did last year, although various samples tasted seemed to evolve differently in the glass. Nevertheless, it appears to be the finest wine this estate has produced in many years. A deep ruby/plum/purple hue precedes a bouquet of black raspberries, blueberries, licorice, sweet herbs, and a hint of gaminess. It is a fleshy, medium to full-bodied St.-Julien with moderate tannin, and attractive sweetness as well as silkiness. Enjoy it during its first two decades of life

A deep ruby/blue/purple hue and an earthy, spicy, sweet currant, and leather-scented bouquet are present in this pretty effort. Although somewhat light in the context of the vintage, it possesses good freshness and the potential to be excellent, possibly outstanding if it fleshes out. It will be one 2005 to enjoy early in life. Anticipated maturity: 2008-2018.

Very rich and ripe on the nose, with currants, light raisins and violets. Full-bodied, with big, juicy tannins and a long finish. Almost 95-100. The best Talbot in years. —J.S.
