The 2016 Couhins-Lurton is medium to deep garnet-purple in color and has a plummy nose with underlying forest floor, bay leaves, yeast extract and unsmoked cigars scents plus a waft of pencil shavings. Medium-bodied and firmly framed with ripe, grainy tannins, it has great energy and freshness, finishing with lingering crushed rocks and savory hints.

The 2016 Chateau Couhins has a slightly more backward bouquet compared to its peers, but it offers attractive blackberry, black olive and raspberry scents that gently unfold in the glass. The palate is sweet on the entry with juicy red and black fruit tinged with sea salt. My first sample was just missing a little backbone, although a second sample encountered at my final tasting seemed to address that and displayed a much steelier finish. This Pessac-Léognan will need three or four years in bottle, but has the substance to suggest that it will drink well for 15-20 years.

Couleur sombre, intense, pourpre.

Mid to dark crimson. Rich, sweet start (very ripe grapes?). Almost right bank-like. Lots of work has gone into this but there seems to be a bit of alcohol on the end. Then some lightly drying tannins but you can't fault the ambition.

Barrel Sample. This wine is juicy, full of attractive fruit with soft tannins and a generous character. It has a touch of spice as well as layers of black currant. This is probably for medium-term aging.

A firm and tight wine with plum, earth and berry character. Medium to full body and chewy tannins. Elevage will soften the wine.

A property that works closely with INRA agricultural research body and Bordeaux's Institute of Wine and Vine Science. This is a name to follow that I have been increasingly impressed with over recent years, and in the 2016 red they are teasing out the balance between plump fruits and the slightly intellectual reserve of the vintage's fresh acidity. I love this for its juicy, luscious fresh fruits. The tannins are chalky, and even a bit chewy right now.
