2023-2041 94/100

The second wine of Château Ausone, the 2016 Chapelle d'Ausone is a gem of a wine that will stand up to anything out there. Boasting a deep purple/ruby color and terrific notes of cassis, smoked tobacco, licorice, and bouquet garni, it has a mouthfilling texture, fine tannins, and the purity of fruit that makes this vintage so special. Drink it any time over the coming 15 years or so.

Some gently smoky nuances with dark stones and a spicy edge to the ripe blackberries and plums that adds plenty of aromatic interest. The palate delivers a very succulent, smoothly rounded and attractive array of rich fruit in a lively, refreshing and expressively vibrant mode. A blend of 56 per cent cabernet franc, 22 percent merlot and 22 per cent cabernet sauvignon. Second wine of Ausone. Try from 2023.

The 2016 Chapelle d’Ausone has a pure, seductive bouquet, offering scents of black cherries, cassis and violet petals that soar from the glass while maintaining wonderful precision. Perhaps compared to the 2016 La Clotte, the new oak (80%) will need longer to fully assimilate, but there is great density and grip to this Chapelle d’Ausone, and the very long and quite intense finish bodes well for the future. One of the best ever made.

The 2016 Chapelle d'Ausone is gorgeous. Supple, silky and inviting, the 2016 offers plenty of near and medium term appeal. Soft contours and lifted, floral aromatics make the 2016 very easy to enjoy, even in the early going. The 2016 spent 20 months in ba 100% new.

A blend of 56% Cabernet Franc, 22% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon, the deep garnet-purple colored 2016 Chapelle d'Ausone sings of black raspberries, kirsch and plum preserves with hints of unsmoked cigars, pencil lead, lavender and chocolate box plus a waft of garrigue. Medium-bodied and fantastically elegant in the mouth, the elegant red and black fruit layers are beautifully framed by firm yet fine-grained tannins and lovely freshness, finishing long and minerally.

Magnifique.

The 2016 Chapelle d'Ausone has the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc at 56% this year, complemented by 22% Merlot and 22% Cabernet Sauvignon. Matured in 80% new oak, it has a very floral, incense and rose petal-scented bouquet that blossoms from the glass. There is an underlying mineral vein here, but it may take a few years to come out. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannin, crisp acidity, cohesive with good backbone, with fine salinité on the finish. It is just a fabulous Deuxième Vin.

Production : 6 000 bouteilles.

One of the real standouts of the vintage, the 2016 Chapelle d'Ausone is mostly young vine Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a dollop of old-vine Merlot. Pliant, supple and inviting, the 2016 is flat-out delicious. Readers who can find the 2016 should not hesitate, as it is not really a second wine, but more of an accessible version of the Grand Vin.

(56 Cabernet Franc, 22 Merlot, 22 Cabernet Sauvignon) | 80% new oak | 6000 bottles This is a wonderfully succulent and juicy Chapelle with superb richness and depth and also stunning harmony on the finish. The Cabernet Franc leading the way has heightened the aromatics for this wine and it has also given it its own clear identity. Amazing. 17.5+

80% of the two Cabernets - young vines.Very deep crimson. Round and polished. Very grown up and glossy. Lots of drive and ripe fruit. Long and luscious. Difficult to see what is wrong with this. Except it's a little dry on the end.

Barrel Sample. The second wine of Château Ausone is dominated by both Cabernets, Sauvignon and Franc. It is structured and seriously dense, with plenty of firm tannins as well as delicious acidity. The structured tannins and solid concentration will allow this wine to age over the medium term.

A firm and silky red with lovely plum and berry character plus hints of wet earth and rose petals. Medium-bodied, very fine and wonderfully juicy. Another wine with finesse and length.
