Chantegrive rouge - Graves 2021

The estate

If you like heart-warming stories, this is one of them. This story begins in 1966 when Henri and Françoise Leveque decided to create what would later become Chateau de Chantegrive.

Henri and Françoise formed what today we would call a 'dream team' : a visionary, loving couple, passionately enthusiastic about wine. They believed in the magnificent terroir of the Graves region, and this decided them to sell their precious stamp collection in order to purchase their two first hectares of vines. In 1985, the Château was admitted to the prestigious Union des Grands Crus de Bordeaux and in 1990, Marie-Hélène Lévêque join the management team at Chantegrive an was confirmed a few years later as the General Manager of the estate. The new generation has now taken over the management and continue to work with passion for this estate.

The 2021 Chantegrive comes across as a bit angular its contours. Frost was a challenge, and that is hard to get past. Nonetheless, it displays lovely red fruit and floral top notes.

This is spicy with blackcurrants, dark chocolate, hints of dried herbs, graphite and cedar. Medium-bodied, firm and tight with polished tannins and hints of crushed stones in the finish. Try after 2024.

The 2021 Château De Chantegrive is a solid Graves, offering plenty of blue fruits, medium-bodied richness, ripe tannins, and some classic earthy tobacco and herbal nuances. It has good acidity and a charming, balanced, fresher style that's common in the vintage.

Medium-deep colour. Fresh inky graphite cedar aromas with black cherry notes. Sinewy textured wine with plentiful black cherry blackcurrant fruits and muscular/ vigorous firm tannins. Cedary dry finish. Exudes a cool growing season. 70% cabernet sauvignon 30% merlot. Roughly 12 months in 50% new French oak.

Forward, medium-bodied, polished, soft, and loaded with sweet, red cherries, kirsch and a hint of cigar box notes, this easy-to-like charmer is ready to go on release. Drink from 2023-2031. 88-90

Frisches, dunkelfruchtiges Bouquet, Brombeeren, Cassis, etwas Kaffee. Sehr gelungen. 2026-2038 (Verkostet im April 2022. Grand Cercle des Vins de Bordeaux/Dourthe)
