Ao Yun - Chine 2021

AO YUN, AN EPIC JOURNEY

Ao Yun, the first wine estate of the Himalayas, is born from a dream that began in 2008: to create a unique, world-class fine wine in China. Commissioned by Moët Hennessy, Dr.

Tony Jordan embarked on a journey into the unknown and after 4 years of scouring the vast terrain of China he eventually made it to North Yunnan, where he observed an ideal microclimate for a fine cabernet. With each vintage, the Ao Yun team, led by Estate & Technical Director Maxence Dulou, perpetuates this vision.
Ao Yun lies near the legendary and remote village of Shangri-La, in the foothills of the Himalayas. Ao Yun’s vineyards are on the banks of the Mekong River, in the UNESCO-protected area of the Three Parallel Rivers and below the sacred Meili snow mountain (6800m). Each of the 4 villages is spread over complementary altitudes from 2100m to 2600m and has different soils, sun exposure and microclimates.

The 2021 vintage - The driest year since Ao Yun's creation

2021 began with the longest period of drought ever experienced, from the beginning of winter until the end of spring, a time when the subsoil normally needs to recharge its water reserves. Summer finally came as a relief together with healing rainfall which de-stressed the vines and refilled water reserves.
The exceptional warm autumn enabled to fully ripen all the grapes, reaching optimal levels of maturity, even in the highest sites. A rare treat in this cool – sometimes too cool - climate.

Tasting notes

"Gorgeous deep ruby color. The nose opens on a bouquet of wild berries along herbal notes then makes room to blood orange, dry rose, tobacco, spice and incense as it opens up. The palate is medium-bodied, showing impressive density counterbalanced by a weightless feeling and a remarkably vibrant acidity. It can be enjoyed now thanks to velvety and perfectly ripe tannins, which also provide the wine with structure to keep improving with time. This multidimensional experience slowly concludes into a lingering mineral , saline finish. A true meditation wine." Maxence Dulou

Bitter orange peel, Chinese five spice, exotic spices, green bell pepper, capscicum, leather and fragrant dark fruit. Ripe and forward, fleshy and bright, this shines out of the glass. Glossy in terms of fragrance and heady scents, as well as ripe fruit, but there's no heaviness on the palate and the aromatic expression is so delightful. A touch of sweetness to the fruit also. Firm and structured, with a velvety texture. Juicy and well made, there's precision and a sleek overall frame. Very good indeed. A blend of 57% Cabernet Sauvignon, 19% Cabernet Franc, 12% Merlot, 6% Syrah and 6% Petit Verdot. The estate experienced the longest period of drought ever in the first half of 2021 with warmer and dryer than usual conditions meaning that the plot situated at 2,600m in altitude were able to fully ripen and be included in the grand vin for the first time. The harvest was 56 days long stretching from 6th September to 2nd November. Yield 20hl/ha. 3.49pH. Ageing 60% in stoneware jars and glass vats, the rest in French oak barrels.

Deep, brilliant ruby. Lush, ripe small dark currants and wild forest berries, freshly picked fine herbs, hints of violet and crushed tobacco leaves. On the palate, it’s balanced, velvety and fresh with juicy fruit and dense, well-integrated tannins. This has been the warmest vintage yet for this extraordinary adventure in the foothills of the Himalayas; for the first time, the dryer, warmer than usual weather meant the high altitude plots, at 2600m above sea level, ripened fully and were used in the grand vin. The complexity of the soil and climate of Ao Yun’s 31 hectares, divided into 35 distinct terroirs and 773 tiny parcels, at varying high altitudes, tended by 131 families, is reflected in this superb wine. 40% new French oak barrels, 60% in glass and ceramic vats.

(Yunnan; 57% Cabernet Sauvignon; 19% Cabernet Franc; 12% Merlot; 6% Syrah; 6% Petit Verdot; sourced from a total of 31 hectares in 773 sub-parcels from 4 different village vineyards at different altitudes - 21% Xidang, 13% Sinong 26% Shuori and 40% Adong – with grapes sourced between 2100 and 2600 metres of altitude and hand-picked over 56 days; a final yield of 20 hl/ha with 51% of the harvest used in the grand vin; 100% per cent regenerative and organic viticulture; pH 3.44; 13.8% alcohol). A miraculous wine involving the most incredible human effort. The winery is at 2600 metres of altitude – almost three times higher than any other wine offered on la place. And, because of that, the wines from each plot need to be tasted at sea level before the final assemblage (to assess them at altitude is akin to doing so in an aeroplane)! The hottest vintage ever recorded here and one characterised by a very long period of drought in the first half of the year followed by much needed rainfall in the summer months, leading to some significant recalibration with more fruit from higher altitude making the selection. Wow! Super-intense and very much defined by the parfumier’s essences of flowers. They’re too intense to be natural in a way. Incense. Juniper. Clove. Crushed and concentrated essences of violet and rose. Turkish delight. Cedar. Black cherry and fruits of the forest. Super fresh and with lots of tension, the tannins incredibly svelte. I love this, but there is just the hint of residual sugar that prevents my note from being even higher. Fascinating

Deep and concentrated but at the same time refined, fresh and complex, this Ao Yun cabernet combines power and concentration from the vintage and place with polished, demure aromas of dark currants, black olives, dark tobacco leaves, cigar box, paprika, dark spices, dark minerals and a touch of cocoa powder. Full-bodied and powerful, with masses of dusty tannins and a vertical yet ample finish. A warm, dry-vintage wine that’s powerful but beautifully balanced, polished and refined. 57% cabernet sauvignon, 19% cabernet franc, 12% merlot 6% syrah and 6% petit verdot. 14% alcohol. It is a selection of grapes from four villages, Drink from 2027.
