Ceretto - Barolo Cannubi San Lorenzo - Barolo Ac. 2012

Ceretto , the iconic crus of Barolo and Barbaresco

Ceretto's story is that of a passion that began in 1937 with Riccardo Ceretto who started an activity that wrote a significant piece of history on the Langhe hills. In the 60s, his sons Bruno and Marcello joined the business with an innovative model for that time in the Piedmont: the importance of the soils. Inspired by the Burgundy, they thought that each vineyard has its own characteristics to reveal and must be considered as a "Cru" in its own right. Thus, they started mapping out the lands that produced the best wines and buying the vineyards. Today the lands have been handed down to their children but the philosophy remains: the land is the soul of Ceretto's wines.

Ceretto's family owns four wineries in the most suited areas of Langhe and Roero. The vineyards cover 160ha with 12ha in Barolo Appellation and 8ha in Barbaresco Appellation. Over the last two decades, aware of their responsibility to their precious lands, the family has embarked on a journey to adopt more environmentally sustainable farming methods and obtained the organic certification in 2015.

Cannubi San Lorenzo, the quintessence of Barolo

Cannubi-San Lorenzo is the highest part of the Cannubi hill and the Ceretto's family owns its summit. This parcel of land is distinguished by its tiny size (0,25ha)  exposed to the east/southeast. It is cultivated according to Ceretto's ancestors, without any mechanical assistance. It boasts a central body that is peculiar due to the presence of very old vines. The team gathers just a few, precious grapes from these rows, makes wine from them in the traditional manner, and leave the results to refine in large bottles for at least ten years.

The 2012 vintage

The wine demonstrates an extraordinary complexity: the smell is sophisticated, kaleidoscopic, punctuated with notes of spices and orange; the mouth is delicate and classic. It connects you to the land of Langa. Each time, the long ageing in glass seems to open a chink, letting us watch from the keyhole, but there is still so much to wait for. Time goes slowly in Barolo.

Dried flowers, pot pourri nuances on the nose - so aromatic and perfumed. Dried fruit, cherries and cranberries but with baked and stewed red berry fruit too and fresh red cherries alongside caramel, coffee and dark chocolate. Round, supple and lively, this is gorgeous from the first sip, brimming with lovely sweet and almost sour cherry acidity and juicy strawberry flavours. Creamt, chalky, taught and full this is giving a mouthful of flavour and texture. I love the elegance but also the sheer confidence on show, characterful, nuanced and mouth watering - it's both fun and sensual. Multifaceted with superior freshness - such a long length, wide and expansive, the flavour goes on and on. Slight edges of bitterness fill the mid palate and finish giving the angles and the interest - cola, aniseed, medicinal eucalyptus and dried herbs. Just brilliant. Tasted (and only sold) from magnum. the flavour is still there after 10 minutes. From a 0.25ha plot. Director Federico Ceretto, oenologist Alessandro Ceretto. Less than 500 magnums released via the Place.
