Michele Chiarlo, the iconic winemaker of Barolo

Michele Chiarlo has played a key role in the production of Italian fine wines and the international recognition of the Barolo appellation. His story as a wine producer began in 1956. From early on, he was convinced that the emancipation of the Piedmont hill has to be found in quality wines that highlight the greatest terroirs. In 1988, he bottled his first Cru of Barolo. Since then, he has never stopped fighting for this appellation and its great wines. 

During his career, Michele Chiarlo has always followed his father's advice: "to be patient, make sacrifices but buy only vineyards in important positions". This led him to purchase the most prestigious crus in the Piedmont, including some parcels of Cerequio in 1988. Located between La Morra and Barolo, Cerequio is considered as one of the finest Barolo crus. It is shaped as a magnificent amphitheatre of vineyards where the soils, exposure and microclimate come together to create exceptional Barolos. 3ha of vines are dedicated to the production of Barolo Cerequio. During exceptional vintages, 0,5ha of them produce the unique Cerequio Riserva. 

The 2019 vintage

Barolo Cerequio 2019 reveals an intense and bright color; the bouquet unveils the distinctive notes of the cru (mint, eucalyptus, sweet spices). A complex wine right from its youth. The mouth is rich and well-defined, bringing out a remarkable structure that is perfectly in balance with the dense and silky tannins, denoting a truly outstanding vintage. Cerequio 2019 is a classic vintage with an open bouquet and harmonious taste, a wine bound for a remarkable longevity and exquisite complexity.”

The Michele Chiarlo 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a bold and elegantly concentrated expression with good heft and staying power. That extra richness is the secret of this vintage, and this wine carries that weight with ease and grace. Flavors of dark fruit, plum and spice give the wine momentum over the palate. This bottle needs more years of cellar age.

Expressive and well-balanced, the 2019 Barolo Cerequio is packed with fresh pine sap, anise, cherry liqueur, and crushed roses. Seamless on the palate, its pure raspberry fruit is generous up front and through the mid-palate before revealing a more classic structure, with fine, ripe tannins, warming spice, and fantastic length. I would allow another couple of years in the cellar, then drink 2025-2040.

Quiet and contemplative on the nose - burnt sugar, caramelised strawberries and pink flowers. Super streamlined, this is direct and persistent with a gorgeous combination of creamy, chalky tannins and herbal strawberries so you get the texture, weight and fruitiness - fluid and moutfilling but all quite sombre right now. Not lively so much - despite the high acidity and crunchy bite to the fruit - but full of depth and layers of complexity. I love the saline finish, really putting the terroir in the glass. It feels refined and purposeful with lots going on and I love the florality that stays the whole way. A subtle beauty.

Enjoyable, with evident oak toast that is well-handled and beginning to melt into the structure, adding texture but not overly dominant. Ruby red colour, packed with sapply red and black cherry fruits that have clarity and brightness, along with the tell-tale orange peel, salted cracker and rosebuds. Highlights the delicacy of Nebbiolo even at four years old, and is a charming wine that builds in intensity through the palate. 3ha vineyard located in La Morra, vines dating back to 1972, first bottled under this label in 1988. Fermented in 55hl oak vats. Winemaker Stefano Chiarlo.

The 2019 Barolo Cerequio is a powerful, brooding wine. Black cherry, leather, incense, tobacco, mocha, dried flowers and chocolate all meld together. As always, the Chiarlo Cerequio is dark, ample and imposing; more power than finesse, elements that build nicely into the substantial finish.
