Ceretto - Barolo Brunate - Barolo Ac. 2015

Ceretto , the iconic crus of Barolo and Barbaresco

Ceretto's story is that of a passion that began in 1937 with Riccardo Ceretto who started an activity that wrote a significant piece of history on the Langhe hills. In the 60s, his sons Bruno and Marcello joined the business with an innovative model for that time in the Piedmont: the importance of the soils. Inspired by the Burgundy, they thought that each vineyard has its own characteristics to reveal and must be considered as a "Cru" in its own right. Thus, they started mapping out the lands that produced the best wines and buying the vineyards. Today the lands have been handed down to their children but the philosophy remains: the land is the soul of Ceretto's wines.

Ceretto's family owns four wineries in the most suited areas of Langhe and Roero. The vineyards cover 160ha with 12ha in Barolo Appellation and 8ha in Barbaresco Appellation. Over the last two decades, aware of their responsibility to their precious lands, the family has embarked on a journey to adopt more environmentally sustainable farming methods and obtained the organic certification in 2015.

Brunate, a charming Barolo

Bricco Roche winery is located in Castiglione Falletto and was built in 1982. It was created to vinify grapes coming from the finest vineyards of the Barolo denomination, including Brunate from La Morra, Bricco Rocche and Cannubi San Lorenzo from Barolo.

Between the town area of La Morra and that of Barolo, fully exposed to the south, the historical Brunate vineyard stretches out: a land of iconic, strongly distinctive wines. For forty years, the wine is made from the fruits of two extended parcels of land spreaded over 5ha, mainly located near the colourful chapel that was decorated by Sol Lewitt and David Tremlett.

The 2019 vintage

The 2019 vintage can be said to be traditional, with a quality production despite a slight drop in quantity compared to the previous vintage.
In its youth, the wine is instilled with a fruit that seems sweet and whole, the tannins are able to enliven the mouthfeel and restore tension, without removing smoothness from its taste. It is the development, then, that makes the picture precious, painting the whole with autumnal tones and whiffs of smokiness. There is an aura of pure hedonism, which pervades the summit of this hill.

The 2015 Barolo Brunate is yet another silky and fine red wine with perhaps a tiny bit more structure and firmness at the back than the other single-vineyard offerings from Ceretto. It is beautifully accessible and oh so fine and elegant. The wine is aged in 300-liter French oak (with 10% new oak) for 12 months, followed by 24 months in Austrian oak casks. I absolutely love this wine. It's a cru that will impress at any wine-tasting party, or I can picture it at dinner with a deliciously rare steak au poivre. Some 13,000 bottles were made.

Very attractive red cherries and berries with plenty of sweetly fragrant spice and warm stones. This offers exceptional power and rich, ripe fruit on the palate. Really balanced and succulent with seamlessly arranged tannins. So good. Drink or hold.

The 2015 Barolo Brunate is a powerful, muscular wine that is going to need a number of years to come around. Sinewy tannins enshroud a core of deep fruit as this heady, layered Barolo gradually opens in the glass. Orange peel, star anise, mint, pine and dried flowers add striking aromatic complexity, but it is the wine's staying power and overall structure that leave the deepest impression. The 2015 Brunate is shaping up to be stellar. That's pretty much all there is to it.
