Carillon d'Angélus - Saint-Emilion 2023

Angélus,  an emblem of excellence

Since 1782, Château Angélus has been owned and managed by the de Boüard family. 2012 is the year of transmission, as the 8th generation, embodied by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, took over the management of the estate. Passionate, dynamic and determined, she is committed to consolidating and developing the reputation of Angélus, driven each year by the same high standards in the production of a wine of excellence.

Carillon d'Angelus, a wine that sets apart

Carillon d'Angélus was born with the 1987 vintage. Since Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal took over the management of the vineyard, she has succeeded in positioning this second wine at an unprecedented level, by giving it its own identity and an extraordinary new cellar specially dedicated to it, a technical tool of rare performance for a second wine.

The 2023 Vintage: "L'affranchi":

This vintage has been named L'Affranchi because of its particularity, directly linked to the climatology of the year 2023, which often caught the teams off-guard and aroused strong emotions, sometimes even concern.

Climatic conditions:

The mild, rainy spring led to heavy downy mildew pressure, but hard work kept the threat under control. A dry, sunny period followed, leading to ideal flowering and a generous harvest. The cool, stormy summer required rigorous preventive action to protect the vines. Harvesting took place from September 14th to October 1st, with well-balanced, rich and energetic juices. The maceration phase revealed the aromatic richness of the berries and an intense violet color.

Tasting notes:

Lively and bright in colour. Scents of red fruit on the nose, fresh and complex, lead to delicate spicy and floral notes.
The palate, dominated by the tension and balance of the Merlot, is energetic, aromatic and long-lasting, driven by the freshness of the Merlot and the refined tannins.

The second wine from Angélus, the 2023 Le Carillon D'Angélus is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc raised in 60% new oak, with the balance in stainless steel. Beautiful black raspberries, cassis, graphite, and spicy, floral notes give way to a medium-bodied, nicely balanced, concentrated 2023 offering fine tannins and the juicy, vibrant, elegant style of the vintage.

Carillon D’Angélus (Saint Émilion; 90% Merlot; 10% Cabernet Franc; ; tasted at Angélus with Benjamin Laforêt, Hubert de Boüard and Stephanie de Boüard-Rivoal). White and rose peppercorns, gently crushed, a little nutmeg and cinnamon, wild herbs, red, white and black currant with some of their leafiness, red cherries and a little Griotte cherry too. The limestone tannins frame and sculpt the wine giving this a lovely structure that imparts great depth and concentration. Vivid and intense. The Cabernet really dances in the space given to it by the frame set by the interaction between the Merlot and the tannins. Menthol on the finish. Impressively pure and with no sensation of oak. So succulent and juicy, sapid and fresh. A red wine made like a white and with all of the natural energy and tension that one finds in the best whites of the vintage.

Flowers, licorice, cherries, plums, black raspberries, vanilla, and a hint of spice open the perfume. On the palate, the wine is polished, soft, and displays red pit fruits, chalk, and spice that you taste, and feel on the palate, and in the finish, with a touch of refreshing mint on the backend. The wine blends 90% Merlot, with 10% Cabernet Franc. Drink from 2027-2040. 92-94 Pts.

Bright violet and plum colour, vibrating with life, an easy wine to recommend as it no doubt will be to drink, love the depth and the rich damson fruit expression that combines with black chocolate, liqourice and cocoa with a juicy finish.

The 2023 Carillon d’Angélus is juicy, supple and quite inviting. Soft contours wrap around a core of plum, red cherry, cedar, new leather, licorice and pipe tobacco. The blend is 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc. Bright, saline notes from the Franc add freshness to complement the forward Merlot fruit.

The 2023 Le Carillon d'Angélus matured in around 50% new oak. This is quite taut and linear on the nose—a more streamlined Carillon perhaps, with touches of crushed stone infusing the red berry fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a hint of blood orange on the entry, vivacious red berry fruit and a generous white pepper note toward the finish. There’s something almost Burgundian about this Carillon in terms of the tannin structure. Give it three or four years in bottle.

The 2023 Le Carillon d'Angélus, as usual a blend of 90% Merlot and 10% Cabernet Franc, exhibits attractive aromas of cherries, raspberries and blackberries mingled with hints of exotic spices, vine smoke and violets. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and polished, it's layered and enveloping, with a charming, seamless profile and a long, mouthwatering finish. As readers will by now remember, this bottling is no longer a "second wine" per se but rather draws on some 25 hectares of dedicated vineyards, emphasizing Merlot from the cool terroirs of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, complemented by holdings in the gravelly Figeac sector and on clay soils near Angélus itself—with anything that doesn't make the cut relegated to the No. 3 d'Angélus.

There’s depth and beauty to this wine. It offers crunchy fruit, a chalky undertone and a hint of raw coffee bean. Medium body. Fine tannins. Bright and transparent. 90% merlot and 10% cabernet franc.
