Citran - Haut-Médoc 2023

Citran, an emblem of the Médoc

Château Citran is one of the oldest estates in the Médoc, with a history dating back to the 13th century under the ownership of the Donissan de Citran family. In 1996, the Merlaut family, with extensive experience in the Bordeaux wine industry, took over the reins of the estate, marking a new era in its rich history. Today, Château Citran boasts over 80 hectares of vines planted with the grape varieties best suited to its terroir: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and Petit Verdot. The traditional and modern techniques used in the vineyards and cellars result in an elegant and distinguished wine.

The 2023 vintage

Very deep purple red color. Fresh and fruity nose. We find notes of small red fruits (strawberry, cherry) and blackcurrant.
Frank attack, a beautiful tannins from the attack to the final, carried by a beautiful freshness.

The 2023 Citran has plenty of blackberry and raspberry fruit on the nose, satisfying in terms of concentration though not complex. Yet, there is presence to these aromatics. The palate is medium-bodied with a dab of sour cherry on the entry, lightly spiced with gentle grip. Quite linear towards the finish, this is enhanced by the sapidity that begs you to take another sip. In many ways, this is a very decent Citran in the making, though I was perturbed by an oxidized sample that appeared at my final tasting. Hopefully that was an just errant sample bottle.

Lots of floral, cedary spice, and both red and black fruits emerge from the 2023 Château Citran, a medium-bodied Haut-Médoc offering juicy acidity, fine, nicely polished tannins, and a good finish. It's balanced, has a complex, satisfying profile, and at least a decade of longevity.

Medium-bodied, fresh, bright, red berries with floral accents come through easily in the medium-bodied, vibrant, crisp, chalky palate. Drink from 2027-2042. 88-90 Pts.

Medium to full intensity ruby red colour, raspberry and red cherry fruits, shot through with plenty of sinewy tannings on the opening, but loses momentum through the palate. This is a well-located estate with so much potential but struggles here to fully deliver on promise.

The 2023 Citran is a soft, fruity wine to drink over the next decade or so while the red-toned fruit retains its youthful energy. Pretty floral overtones perk up the finish nicely.

Dark ruby colour, purple reflections. Ripe plums, candied orange zest, a hint of dried fruit, fine herbal savouriness. Lean, red berryish, a delicate texture with subtle tan- nins, redcurrant touch in the finish, offers uncomplicated drinking pleasure.

This is medium-bodied with firm and taut tannins, showing crunchy fruit as well as some crushed herbs. Racy acidity adds length and focus. It’s a bit chewy at the end, yet vivid and balanced.
