Cantenac Brown - Margaux 2021

Cantenac Brown, the most Scottish estate in Margaux

Witness of the Scottish origins of its founder John-Lewis Brown, the emblem of Cantenac Brownis its remarkable Tudor style chateau. The 60 hectares of vines surrounding it are spread over the prestigious plateaus of Margaux and Cantenac.

Since the end of 2019, with the arrival of Le Lous Family, a new wind of enthusiasm has been blowing across the team of this 3rd Classified Growth in 1855. Today, Tristan Le Lous, an agronomist with a passion for oenology and the owner, and José Sanfins, general manager, are very involved in managing the estate and are inextricably linked with the estate’s modern history. The meeting of this twosome was a pivotal milestone.

In 2020, driven by their ambition to produce one of the best wines of Margaux appellation, the two men embarked on a spectacular challenge, a form of quest for the absolute, for which the demand for environmental quality was raised to the highest possible level: building a new and unrivalled zero-carbon cellar made of raw earth.

The latest project born from this creative energy that animates the teams: the collaboration with the artist David Popa for the creation of a magnificent ephemeral work of art made in the heart of Cantenac Brown's vineyard with raw earth and natural pigments: https://bit.ly/CantenacBrownwithDavidPopa

The 2021 vintage, good things come to those who wait

José Sanfins tells you about this vintage: https://bit.ly/CantenacBrown2021

The 2021 vintage will remain in our memory as a year that constantly tested our ability to adapt to varying weather conditions. Particularly for this vintage, the Cantenac Brown team’s experience has allowed us to adjust quickly to each scenario. After a year on the deck, from the cold front at the end of April to the humid early summer, our hard work over the year will have finally paid off.

Cantenac Brown 2021, a bright, velvety and fleshy wine

The first vats are very aromatic with notable hints of raspberry. The Merlots are softer than usual and the Cabernets more concentrated. The blend of the two varietals should give a round and full-bodied wine, with fine and elegant tannins. Typically, Bordeaux. The balance is excellent between acidity and roundness.

The 2021 Cantenac Brown is superb. Rich and flashy, with tons of persistence, the 2021 is a wine of notable depth. Black cherry, plum, spice, new leather and mocha are all amplified. Readers will find a Cantenac Brown endowed with notable textural richness. Estate Manager Jose Sanfins opted to bleed the musts, and that resulted in an unusually opulent wine for the year—very much in line with the house style. The 2021 is drop-dead gorgeous.

The 2021 Cantenac Brown has turned out very nicely in bottle, wafting from the glass with notes of dark berries and cherries mingled with hints of menthol, licorice and violets. Medium to full-bodied, fleshy and seamless, with a layered core of fruit, sweet tannins and nicely integrated acids, it concludes with a delicately vanillin-inflected finish. This strong performance in a challenging season underlines this property's upward trajectory.

Dark chocolate, hazelnuts, tea leaves, herbs and dark berry fruit on the nose. It’s precise and focused, with tight, firm tannins that provide an elegant but solid structure. Sleek and long. 73% cabernet sauvignon and 27% merlot. Try from 2026.

Pretty, with silky-edged black cherry and violet notes that glide through prettily, laced with black tea and a subtle savory edge. Shows enough energy to offset the vintage's austere edge. Well done. Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. Drink now through 2032. 8,750 cases made.  –JM

A better effort than many, CB has more silkiness and texture, and this is accompanied by rather ebullient oak, but it works. While I am pleased to report this news, there are many more wines ahead of this one in the queue when it comes to balance and completeness. 16

Belle réussite pour ce premier millésime du nouveau propriétaire. Très beau nez typé, texture en suavité et en souplesse, ensemble harmonieux, encore plus fin et margalais de caractère que dans les années précédentes.

Deep crimson. A little shy. Blackcurrant, smoky vanilla aromas. Intense blackcurrant pastille cedar favours, some smoky malt notes, fine brambly tannins and underlying mineral notes. Works well. 16 months in roughly 60% new French oak.

Flowers, espresso, cocoa and black currants are what you find on the nose. The wine is soft, round and polished on the medium/full-bodied palate, finishing with more of that dark cocoa, roasted coffee, black cherry and a hit of peppery spice on the backend. Drink from The wine is a blend of 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot. 13.2% ABV, 3.75 pH. The harvest took place September 23-October 4. Drink from 2024-2032. 92-94

Ruby red depth to the colour with violet edging. Not as luxurious as the past few years of Cantenac Brown have been, but excellent quality, well put together, finessed and powerful with black cherry fruits and raspberry puree, with tiny pulses of lemongrass acidity. 60% new oak barrels for ageing.

The 2021 Cantenac Brown has an open, expressive bouquet of tobacco-tinged red fruit and well-integrated oak. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, light red berry fruit mixed with sage and cedar, and perhaps a very slight herbal element on the finish. Winemaker José Sanfins has crafted a fine-boned Cantenac Brown, one that is more suited to early drinking than recent vintages.

The 2021 Cantenac Brown is going to require time to come together. The Cabernet is pushed up. That very much comes through in the wine's aromatic profile and overall intensity. Sweet red-fleshed fruit, tobacco, incense and rose petal are some of the many notes that build. Vibrant and exquisitely layered, Cantenac Brown is quite promising. Élevage will be critical. Like so many of his colleagues, Technical Director José Sanfins saignéed the Merlots, lightly chaptalized the Cabernets and opted for longer but gentler extractions. Tasted two times.

Rubinrot.

The 2021 Cantenac Brown is another fine effort from a Margaux estate that's been on something of a roll of late. Unwinding in the glass with notions of cassis, wild berries, loamy soil and cigar box, it's medium to full-bodied, layered and seamless, with good concentration, lively acids and a nicely defined finish. José Sanfins and his team opted to wait to pick the estate's Cabernet Sauvignon between the fourth and 12th of October, and that appears to have paid off. The blend is 73% Cabernet Sauvignon and 27% Merlot, and just over half the estate's production went into the grand vin.

Perfumed black cherries and raspberries on the nose. Lovely sculpting, you get waves of juicy, bright, red summer berries and just-ripe red cherries with creamy, chalky edges. Tannins are present and linger on the tongue, gently gripping the flavours. This has great character, not too dense nor expansive, but good definition, energy and classicism with slate and crushed stone. Touch of bitter black chocolate marks the finish which is extremely attractive. Excellent job from winemaker José Sanfins.
